Windows uses 20% of your bandwidth! Get it back
A nice little tweak for XP. M*crosoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes (suspect for updates and interrogating your machine etc..)
Here's how to get it back:
Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "
This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :
"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.
works on XP Pro, and 2000
other OS not tested.
juang 15th April 2006, 05:10 does this affect your system's performance? since there are no bandwidth left for them to do their stuff..
noban 15th April 2006, 05:17 yup to some extend ..pages r loading to fast..
juang 15th April 2006, 16:47 i mean are there any negative effects?
banks 15th April 2006, 19:23 wow noban that was a gud thing :weedman: but i also have the same doubt which juang has on -ve effects
noban 16th April 2006, 01:33 its for online activity dude..nothing to do with offline system activity...nothin on performance..my machine working fine since i modified it and who wants tat crap windows update..download pack r available anywhr though unofficial:)
ashpreet_htbk 16th April 2006, 08:21 juang ! Why would a system require bandwith for performance ? wht bout people without internet ! lol...
juang 16th April 2006, 10:01 how will i know.. lol.. i mean will it affect the auto windows update?
noban 16th April 2006, 16:39 off course window update require internet n reserves 20% ur bandwith for it use..if u not using automatic update which is worst change ur setting..if u in doubt check explain button in tat bandwidth option window
candccom 18th April 2006, 11:09 nice tips.. i set it, but can't really "see" the difference. Do anyone know how to increase the bitcomet download speed. The most i can get is about 50k/s.. My adsl line is 1mb.
noban 18th April 2006, 16:07 bitcomet is torrent man..it all depend on seeders n leechers at tat point of time...more seeders increases speeed....ur connection help when more seeders r thr and support greater bandwidth download...
ashpreet_htbk 18th April 2006, 18:31 Xactly ! ... Auzures is the best bit torrent software and it helps with speed in some xtent or else .. it depends entirely on seeders n leechers !!
banks 18th April 2006, 23:56 well noban the gud news for me is that atleast i can surf faster thanx to u   but a strange problem has arrisen  when i start my pc, my home page is google, whenever i type ny other site, be it google or yahoo or iphone-forum.org the webpage freezes. it shows not-responding, then i have to got the task manager and end the process of IEXPLORE.EXE after ending that again i have to open my browser and start surfing. this problem has started after ur trick:finga: :finga: but still am happy that surfing rate has increased :partyman: :partyman:
noban 19th April 2006, 02:56 clear ur cookies n cache n history..try again now...which browser r u using...me usin opera ..never give a problem...
LayZ 19th April 2006, 09:53 This 20% bandwidth is reserved for background transfers in QOS(Quality Of Service) aware networks...Windows XP and Windows 200 have QOS Packet Schedulers installed by default as part of the TCP/IP stack...so unless you are on a QOS aware network u won't notice any difference..besides Windows XP Home doesn't have Group Policy Editor...so Home users need not try this at all...
banks 21st April 2006, 19:59 Layz, that means that it is not adviced to use this trick for home pcs using internet using lan connection or something else:roll:  actually all that u said went over my head (might be the effect of booze):partyman: :partyman: :finga:

This is the Quality of services quata used by windows but this can not really give any difference if the network which you use is not connected to QOS server center... Speed is not affected in any way when useing a non Qos internet line on this fact also the OS itself ask to sync. to the QOS server...
SO no worries
banks 26th April 2006, 21:36 hey guys its clearly mentioned before tat this tweak only for XP PROFFESIONAL NOT FOR XP HOME...

As shiesty as MSFT can be, I really do not think the reserved 20% is for updates or interrogating your machine. First of all, the bandwith isn't avaliable at all. The updates run the same as anything else.
MSFT wouldn't dare try to interrogate your machine w/out your knowledge either. Can you imagine the trouble they would get into?
Otherwise, thanks for the tip though. It is a useful one. :)

enigma.td 20th May 2006, 04:58 Havent noticed any difference but thanks for the tip all the same :D
enigma
I'd be surprised if you would see the difference.
support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q316666
, so basically if you aren't running a program in the background that uses the the reserved 20% for high priority traffic, the pre-allocated piece of bandwidth remains available to other programs.
Talesin 22nd May 2006, 03:20 good tip, but nothings changes in my system. My system is still :finga: fast:):) even without this thread.
noban 26th May 2006, 17:52 i dont know but i still support it ;) my speeed increased a bit though if u on slow connection only..hehe..

Gracefull 17th August 2006, 12:24 Nice Trick for increase speed
mccm 20th August 2006, 00:45 I notice the download speed faster after your solution.
Thank you.
vicaner 21st August 2006, 12:29 effectively, using this tip would make your bandwidth all yours and not limited by the 20% reserve by windows for their own ends I guess. So if before you only use 80% of your available bandwidth, you could now utilize 100% of it. I'll check it out and see if there is any performance difference.
eameam 22nd August 2006, 04:25 Increasing bandwidth by 20% affected my LAN connection, i dont know the rationale behind. But when i restore it to default w/out configuring this 20% increase my LAN connection is Ok again... Just sharing my experience...
