You can prevent most of the unnecessary programs in starting every time by typing msconfig into run (start-->run).
Go to "startup" tab.
Then you can decide which programs are allowed to start at startup. Be sure not to uncheck the ms/windows tasks (in services), this could affect the functionality of windows.

I hope this will help you!

You can also use the program (HijackThis) by Soeperman Enterprises Ltd. This can help you a lot.

The most processes can be found by typing them into google, so if you don't know what the process is good for you can also check it in google.

beosound is right i am using tuneup utilities 2006 and must say great lil program however if you really want to tweak the setting use the startup manager in msconfig. if you are unsure of each of the processes you can find them on the microsoft website but i am unsure of the specific link.

Yes, it isn't installed, but you can download it here ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) and it's working as on the other Windows versions :) (I've tested it)
