lysanderwe 29th August 2006, 11:13 Darxide EMP by Frontier, Price: $20 (here: nothing:ilove: )
Reviewed February 2003
Frontier made fame for themselves with popular 3D space action games like Elite and Virus. Now they are bringing one of their most successful titles, Darxide, to the Pocket PC. The original Darxide was developed for Sega 32X and the handheld version looks not much different except it’s on a smaller screen.
If you have played 3D space fighting games like Star Lancer or Star Wars, you see similarities in Darxide’s game play. You control a Star Fleet fighter alone in the galaxy where you have to fight alien enemies and protect crystal mining operations. There are a total of 12 intensive action filled levels and you will be given missions ranging from destroying asteroids and alien fighters to rescuing miners and protecting mining ships. Each new level increases the difficulty by adding more tasks and more enemies to the mix within the same time limit. The game ends with a long and difficult boss fight where you have to destroy the alien mother ship.
Darxide features true 3D space flying where your ship can go any direction into space. You’ll control the ship with the D-pad and fire using the stylus, simulating the feel of a game pad. The game is displayed in landscape mode and you can rotate the screen to suit lefties and righties. Frontier did an amazing job at making the controls smooth and easy to master, though the levels often must be replayed to complete. The learning curve is set in a such way that even if you are not a veteran of this genre, you still can make it through the game with repeated practice. You will pick up extra lives in the game and you can retry to complete a level as many times as you wish so long you still have lives left. The game ends when all your lives are lost and you must restart from level 1. It would probably have been better if there were a feature that allows you to restart at the last failed level instead of the first level of the game.
One of things you will be amazed at is the quality of the graphics at very high frame rates. There are two settings in game speed and the maximum game frame rate reaches up to 90 fps. At any frame rate, the graphics do not lose any sharpness and the special effects never slow down the game. The upgrade items for the ship and weapons, the alien fighters and even the small miners in their space suits can be seen clearly with special effects like plasma explosions and asteroid dust. The game interface presents plenty of information yet does not clutter the main game screen. You will be treated to various alien fighters, turrets and other spacecrafts that show off the artwork.
The great use of sound effects from the console game also carries over to the Pocket PC. From voice dubs to special FX, the sounds bites help to create the gaming environment. There are no music background tracks. The game runs smoothly on both ARM and Xscale process Pocket PCs. The program only uses about 1.4MB of memory.
No doubt when console game developers begin to port their popular titles to the mobile gaming platform, we will see more and more high quality games on our PDAs. Darxide brings us strong game design power with furious non-stop action game play and wonderfully rendered 3D graphics. The veterans of this game genre may now test their skills anywhere with their highly portable gaming machines. As for the newcomers, Darxide is a great game with which to practice your deep space flying missions. So keep your seat straps one, and engage!
Playing Hints and Tips
Don’t give up if you failed a mission. The more practice you put in, the easier it will get. Trust your radar, even when you can’t see the objects yet, but follow the directions on the radar. You will benefit from it.
When you have rescue or protect tasks in your mission, make sure you always pay attention to them first.
In the later levels, you have to pick up the blue crystals for shields and need weapon power ups. Many asteroids harbor the crystals and power ups. So don’t pass them up just because you didn’t need them in the last missions.
Ratings (scale of 1 to 5):
Graphics Awesome graphics transferred to the small screen. Sharp and smooth at high frame rates.
Sound Nice sound FX and voice- overs.
Fun Meter For 3D space fighters vets, this is a must have title. For the newbies, not having the ability to start at the last level completed might turn some folks away.
Addictivity The action-filled missions will keep gamers coming back for more. Not everyone will make it to the end though and sometimes replaying the first 6 missions could get a bit repetitive.

lysanderwe 7th September 2006, 20:52 "Whilst most gamers will no doubt know all about Elite already, and will almost certainly be more than a little interested about the fact that it's due to hit the PocketPC, there will still be some who might benefit from something of an introduction.
It was nearly 20 years ago that computer gaming started to grow up. In my eyes, that coming of age was heralded by the arrival of one single game. Back then, software houses would literally be just that - 'houses', consisting not of teams of developers but perhaps one or two programmers. Elite was written by two college friends in 1984 who decided to create a space trading game in their spare time while attending university. Elite rocked the gaming world and is still revered as a classic today. That's some achievement considering this was a game written for the BBC Micro computer in 1984. Elite would soon spread to virtually all home computers throughout the years but the BBC version was regarded as the best for many years.
Elite was one of those games that could be described as truly original at the time. It was the first 3D space adventure game, and it was the first truly open ended game where you were free to do exactly as you pleased. You could be a trader, bounty hunter, pirate... whatever life you chose to lead in the Elite world you had lots of space in which to do it, for Elite featured an entire universe with all the planets having their own characteristics, dangers and trading potential. Your only real goal was to reach the status of 'Elite' having started off the game as 'Harmless'".
More about the story of this game, plus links to Ian Bells' website, creator of the original version, and full review at PDACorps
NO device requirements available, I'm sorry ;-)
Have fun, enjoy, replay and repute
