Hi, i'm facing a peculiar problem... Of missing hard disk space... I've got a Hp dv 5200tx laptop with a 100GB drive... one partition(c) of 83.1 Gb and second(d) of 8.95 Gb which is the recovery drive.

In the C drive after showing all hidden files and system files:

Total Capacity = 83.1 GB
Total Used = 63.4 GB (size on disk)
Free Space = 17.3 Gb
Therefore, Missing Space = 83.1 - (63.4 + 17.3) --> 2.4 GB

Now where is this 2.4 Gb??????

I checked this on a similar laptop... that has no problems.

Mine is a newish laptop... never infected by a virus... checked wid kaspersky online scan. What do i to recover this space? Some application? Or some other method?

Seondly i noticed two files of more than a Gb each hiberfil.sys and pagefile.sys... cant i del these to recover more space?

I'll greatly appreciate ur help.........! Thanks a ton! Please do help!!

Hello there, the two files you mentioned are there for the following reasons and can be disabled.

First: hiberfil.sys is for windows xp's hibernation support, it dumps all information from memory to your hard disk and then powers down. To disable this feature and delete the file you need to go to control panel > power options > hibernate and make sure the enable hibernation is un-ticked.

Second: pagefile.sys is page file memory, windows will use hard disk space when your computer runs out of physical memory. It also makes this file even on computers with a lot of memory (mine is 1gb and it still makes this file). I only recommend disabling this feature if you have a lot of RAM 1GB or more. to disable this feature go to the windows desktop, right-click my computer and click properties. Click on advanced tab, under performance, click settings, click the advanced tab. Under virtual memory click change, now set it to no paging file. Click ok and apply.

That gets rid of those two files, you can also disable system restore or make the system restore cache smaller to give you more space.

Hope that helps. BR
