updated Nokia Podcasting application (25 Oct 2006)

As with most MP3 players, you can download podcasts on your PC and transfer them to your Nokia N91 via Windows Media Player or Nokia PC Suite. You can also download podcasts directly to your Nokia N91 without using your PC at all.

Podcasts are regular digital audio or video broadcasts that can be downloaded and played on mobile devices and personal computers. News agencies and other sources offer podcasts on a wide range of topics. Often podcasts are regularly updated in a series of new episodes, so users often subscribe to their favorite shows.

The Nokia Podcasting application allows you to find, subscribe to and download podcasts over the air with your Nokia N91. After downloading a podcast, you can listen to or watch it when you want.

You can choose whether the Podcasting application uses Wireless LAN (requires WLAN network access) or GPRS/WCDMA packet data (requires a packet data plan) to download podcasts to your Nokia N91.

Changelog:

1. New Default Directories (Featured, International, Podcast Discovery, Video)
2. Better Memory Card (MMC) support
3. Improved stability of data connection
4. Reduced the power consumption by removing unnecessary icon animations
a. Remove spinning of icon in Directory view to reflect amount of data downloaded
b. Remove the spinning of icon in Podcast/Episodes view
5. Disabled the use of right/left arrow key to open and go back in Directory view
6. Cleared up buffer for editing URL (i.e. previously entered URL not remembered when entering a new one)
7. User defined directory is preserved after disconnection or application exit (ie., from "Main Menu" when a connection is active, choose "Options" and "Disconnect" to disconnect connection.

Before upgrading your Podcasting app:

1.If you don't want to preserve your subscribed podcasts and episodes:
a. Uninstall Podcast app from App manager before installing ver 1.00.0.
b. Find the Podcasting icon on your device. (For example, in the MY OWN folder on the N91).
c. Click "Options" and choose "Remove"
d. Install the 1.00.0 version of Nokia Podcasting

2. If you would like to preserve your subscribed podcasts and episodes:
a. Simply install ver 1.00.0 on top of the Beta version, you will see a warning message that ver 0.93.(6) will be replaced by ver 1.00.(0).
b. Select OK to proceed with the installation and use the same location where Beta version is installed when asked where do you want to install ver 1.00.0.

If you are not sure where Beta version was installed, open App Manager and check whether there is a memory icon shown besides Podcast. If yes, your Podcast Beta version is installed on memory card (or hard drive); otherwise, it is installed on phone memory.

3.After upgrading your Podcasting app:
If you did not remove (uninstall) Podcast Beta version before upgrading to ver 1.00.0, you default directories will not be updated to the one comes with ver 1.00.0. In order to show the new default directories, open "Directory" view and select "Restore Default" from the option menu.

The new default directories are: Featured, International, Podcast Discovery, and Video

You can now update your Multimedia Computer (yes, these are not just Phones anymore!) software via the Nokia Phone Software Update tool at nokia.com (For example, N91 software update should allow N914GB to play Digital Rights Management (DRM) protected wma files as well as have stereo bluetooth functionality)

BUT

4. Things to watch for when you are upgrading your Mulitmedia Computer (MC) software via Nokia Software Update (NSU):
a. Always do a backup on your phone memory before NSU via PC Suite.
NOTE:Harddrive or large MMCs (1GB+) are not recommended to be backed up using PC Suite.
b. After NSU is completed, restore your backup FIRST via PC Suite before proceeding with upgrading your Podcasting app to ver 1.00.0

Troubleshooting:
Q: My Podcast version 1.00.0 was working fine before and I got an error message: "Menu: Unable to execute file for security reasons" when I put in another MMC card?
A: Most likely the MMC that you put in contained a beta version of Podcast (i.e. someone has installed Podcast beta version on that MMC card). Simply take out that MMC card and Podcast ver 1.00.0 will start again without any problem.

Q: I have beta version installed on my memory card and I upgraded my MC sw without doing any backup and restore. After I installed Podcast ver 1.00.0 on top of this new MC sw (either on phone memory or memory card), I got an error message: "Menu: Unable to execute file for security reasons" when I start Podcast ver 1.00.0. I didn't encounter any problem during the installation process.
A: To fix this problem, either format your memory card and re-install Podcast ver 1.00.0 if you selected memory card as the location for installing Podcast ver 1.00.0 or use memory card reader (or USB mass storage) to delete the following file: \Private\10003a3f\import\apps\mPodder_reg.rsc

...and the term "podcasting" is a bit misleading on Nokia's part -- it's for subscribing to podcast RSS feeds and downloading the associated content. See here:

It works just fine on phones other than N91, I use it on my E50 with no problems. It has a great list of feeds already for you to get started...

OP: thx for the update!
