Updated mine by changing the code using NSS to a generic UK N73, then using the Nokia updater - Now shows V 3.0638.0.0.1 30-10-2006

<edit:>

I used code: 0527009

Get NSS from [Only registered and activated users can see links]
Run NSS, write the new code to the phone.
Then simply run the Nokia Updater Software

Upgrade nokia firmware preko USB DKU kabla

Zatim skinite najnoviju verziju Nokia Software Updater-a (u daljem tekstu NSU) sa Nokia sajta sa linka [Only registered and activated users can see links]

Sada mozemo zapoceti proceduru promene Product code-a sledecim postupkom:
Instalirajte NSS
Instalirajte NSU
Povezite vas telefon preko USB kabla i sacekajte da Windows instalira drajvere.
Otvorite NSS i kliknite na „Scan for new device” u gornjem desnom uglu prozora.
Sada mozete poceti apdejt vaseg telefona preko NSU-a a preuzimanje softvera i jezickog paketa mozete proveriti u folderu C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\Service Layer\Service Modules\ServiceModule_00001\Products\

Here’s a tutorial that will teach you how to update your phone’s firmware to a Nokia original version (without your operator’s personalization) with NSU (Nokia Software Update – the official Nokia program).
NSU reads the product code of your phone and it searches its database for a newer version of the corresponding firmware in order to upgrade it. This is why you will need to change the product code of your phone into a non-branded product code, before running NSU.
Download the « NSS » software in order to change the phone’s product code. This is a shareware program that you can download on the site of its author here: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
And then download NSU here: NSU. [Only registered and activated users can see links]

NOW WE CAN BEGIN:
Install NSS
Install NSU
Connect your phone and wait for Windows to install the drivers.
Open NSS and click on “Scan for new device” on the right-upper part of the window
Click on the icon « Phone info »
Click on “Scan”
As you can see,you can change the product code (on the right of the « phone info » window of NSS). For a Nokia 6680, type the product code 0521637 (this is the product code for France!) and then mark the case “Enable”.
Now press “Write”, and your phone’s product code will be changed (you might think that nothing happened, because the phone is still in normal mode, and the changing of the product code only takes a couple of seconds, but don’t worry, the product code changed !).
Close NSS and you can proceed now with the NSU flashing.
When the flashing with NSU is over, start-up your phone and you’ll have the pleasant surprise that your phone’s firmware is the latest Nokia non-branded firmware in date!

NOTE: I advise you to disable any antivirus and firewall on your PC during the flashing.

In order to find out the product code for other phone models, download the firmware for your phone model, connect your phone to NSS, click « Scan », then « Flash », and after that look for your product code when on « Market » you will see your country. Write down this number, then you can start the manipulation as described above. Anyway, we will soon have the product codes for all the models, so we won’t need this step.

Upgrade nokia firmware preko USB DKU kabla

Zatim skinite najnoviju verziju Nokia Software Updater-a (u daljem tekstu NSU) sa Nokia sajta sa linka [Only registered and activated users can see links]

Sada mozemo zapoceti proceduru promene Product code-a sledecim postupkom:

Instalirajte NSU
Povezite vas telefon preko USB kabla i sacekajte da Windows instalira drajvere.
Otvorite NSS i kliknite na „Scan for new device” u gornjem desnom uglu prozora.

Sada mozete poceti apdejt vaseg telefona preko NSU-a a preuzimanje softvera i jezickog paketa mozete proveriti u folderu C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\Service Layer\Service Modules\ServiceModule_00001\Products\

Pozdrav

At last there is new software release for Nokia N73 on Nokia Europe website.

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

I haven't updated my phone yet, will do it very soon. Has anybody tried it out yet. If yes then please tell me the new Firmware Version No. provided and is there any improvement in functioning of the device after the software update.

Version 3.0638.0.0.1
30-10-2006
RM-133

Known problems
Gallery still doesn't close properly (you can see it running if you have a task manager installed - this may be by design)
Camera white balance preview still does not work properly
While listening to music with 3D tones on, you get a missed call. Click Show > Dial - phone reboots. This does not happen with 3D Tones off (regression?)

Known fixes
Active Standby is now in bold font
Radio station is now displayed properly, without the extraline above it, in white color (previously it was black font)
Camera - overall feeling is that the camera works a bit faster (opening up, switching to and from Video Mode)
Gallery zooming is now slower (progress bar displayed on all zoom levels, on previous firmware progress bar was only displayed for the first step to 25%), but appears to be better quality - hence the reason for slowing down.
New Modem app in the Applications folder, it can connect via infrared (only). No help is included for the new app.
Phone Memory backup restore now works
3D Tones seem to work properly now
New ringtones added (some labeled 3D Effect #)
Voice dialling now works while listening to the radio
Music playback resumes after a call

New problems / regressions
While listening to music with 3D tones on, you get a missed call. Click Show > Dial - phone reboots. This does not happen with 3D Tones off (maybe an old bug)

1. NSU has a new version (?already?) from 1.1.30 to 1.1.40. No buglist or equivalent (specific to Nokia, isn't it?)

2. I had a problem upgrading: it worked until NSU ask me to extract/insert the battery and power the phone. When rebooted, the phone works excelent (with 3.368.0.0.1), but NSU was not able to continue (~can't connect to phone), even after activated "PC Suite" link.
Now the phone seems ok with new version; but NSU still say "software update available" when connecting the phone.
Any advice would be very appreciate.

Hey updated to the new version

Have noticed the following

: New settings wizard in tools
: A link to f secure installer
: New modem option(only by infrared)
: Gallery zooming slower

However I had thought that downloading the new version would stop the slow functioning of my phone( It was taking around 15 secs to load the messaging menu from the standby mode ) . However It didnt... Phone was still slow... So I searched the forums and found out a way to format the phone..and when I did...the settings wizard is gone...so in the installer link to fsecure......(these items were listed in app manager before )
However the modem link is still there..

As for how to format.... switch off your phone...press the green + 3 + * buttons and switch it on...until it has booted...it will erase all memory including contacts(i found out the hard way)...I had thought that since so many people were complaining about the phone not being formatted..it wont be done...

I am in the US. Not sure of my product code, but I believe the phone is an asian phone. I updated yesterday without a problem. Went from version 2.0628.0.0.1 to version 3.0638.0.0.1. Yes im with optus and have updated with no problems. You have to download Nemesis Service Suite V 1.0.38.3 and connect to PC suite. Back up your phone using PC suite first !!!! then leave it connected to PC suite and click on NSS and it will say disconnected from pc suite but it is still connected to the computer via USB cable ,on NSS click on scan for new devices (top right) then wait until it finds your details then click on phone info icon (top middle left) then click on scan button then then click on read button and you can change the product code then click on write to rewrite your new product code. I NOTED my original product code down BEFORE I changed it and after I up dated the firmware I then rewrote it back to the original just in case I had any warranty issues . Now you can go to nokia software updater and update and it should be all OK. Then after that you can restore all your details from PC suite (contacts , calendar , themes etc)
Hope this helps.

I am in OZ as well....What product code did you use to update with...I updated my three N70 this way and it debranded beautifully. Lots more menu options than before, no more 3 symbol on startup (boots faster). I was under the impression that you needed the generic product number so that the Nokia Updater would see your phone as different (as it looked for the three update firmware not generic nokia firmware). I dont want to update my phone with firmware that isnt for my region..ie wrong lanuage etc.

Nice to see we can remove carrier firmware..I like it without all the crap. My N73 from 3 has a Dodgy 3 Symbol moving around at startup....I would like to remove that along with the 3 wall paper...I can do that by changing themes but I want it gone forever...

Just updated firmware to V 3 .0638.0.0.30 , 30-10-2006 . I used product code 0539343 . I am in Australia.
This is the new music edition software for the n73 (BLACK VERSION) besides the music menu being all round better to use the fonts in CONTACTS seem bolder with the phone being alot more quicker generally when flitting around through the menu. I think it is an improvement on the last version 3.0638.0.0.1 . I dont have any music tracks to play and compare but it comes with 1 track installed (in my heart) and it is alot easier to use than the old one. In options it has shuffle, repeat, equalizer, audio settings, start visualisation. For instance in audio settings it has 3 options ; Balance ,stereo widening and loudness which all enhance the music being played. overall a nice upgrade, Oh I tried upgrading a number of times but NSU kept saying no firmware upgrade available but i forgot to change the theme back to an original nokia one befire i started. Did that and it all went well ,so change your theme to stock before upgrading.

yup this really works well. thanks Trevsy. Updated to new firmware and now runnign better. good advice on setting the default theme to Nokia also.

Couple things:

1. i cant access my 3 anywhere anymore. i used to have it as an option on my RHS top selection key - but it is not available as an option anymore?
2. when i connect to PC Suite - is there an option that automatically defualts to the PC suite - i keep having to manually accept pc suite when i connect (select mode)?
3. and no more call log option to view?

and finally - i of course didnt write down my old product code # - do i need this?

Is that when you try and go onto 3s website ? If so you need to set up your access point again for internet connection.

2. when i connect to PC Suite - is there an option that automatically defualts to the PC suite - i keep having to manually accept pc suite when i connect (select mode)?

No I have to manually select everytime.

3. and no more call log option to view?

My log is their on the main menu thats the symbol with a blue arrow pointing up and a green one pointing down. dont know what happened to yours you can do the upgrade again if yoy want. to see if it is their.

of course didnt write down my old product code # - do i need this?

Only if you have to make a warranty claim with 3. but it doesnt matter as nokia will end up with the phone anyway and they will know that the firmware has been changed anyway. The providers here in australia still only have the firmware 2.0628.0.0.1 so they are miles behind as regards firmware.I talked to nokia care centre in Adelaide and they said that was the firmware version that was approved for the service providers networks. So if you waited for the service providers to upgrade the firmware you will be waiting for months.

oh geez. i've just found more stuff. everything is all over the place. my log now appears in applications, all this other stuff is there also (like you said). i don't suppose you can move things around. Log should be on the 1st screen you come to imho

21st November 2006, 08:35
Yes you can move most applications around to either these folders tools , aplications, office , games. And when you open up the very first menu screen I have moved everything around so I only have 12 applications on the first page (what I use the most) so that I am not scrolling through to find things .To move stuff just highlite the application you want to move and press options and you can either move it to a different position(MOVE) on that page or move it to a different folder (MOVE TO FOLDER)on another page.

The only way of updating the firmware by yourself is via the NSU , you have to change the product code of the phone using a small piece of software called NEMESIS SERVICE SUITE 1.0.38.3 (490KB)from here [Only registered and activated users can see links] This is how you update from one of my previous post'.

I found this on another forum to try and explain about the firmware from your provider and nokia.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Nokia discussions have closed the discussion regarding N73 Firmware. An administrator has informed me that if you change the product code on the phone and use the software updater to get new firmware, then you invalidate your warranty with Nokia as well as with your Network provider as it is deemed as hacking the software.

I find the situation of Networks having to release there own firmware update release stupid. The Networks code should be a separate program of firmware to the manufacturers. That way everyone can benefit from the manufacturers firmware updates as well as when their network upgrade their software for the phone. This would avoid the problem of some being able to legally update the phone whilst others are at the mercy of their network to release an update !!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

So if you want to wait for your network provider to authorize nokia to update your firmware you have to wait. The product code of your phone prohibits the NSU from updating the phone that is why you have to change the product code. The product codes I imagine are given to the service providers so they can have control over which firmware is installed. Seems stupid to me if their is better version of firmware out their that nokia have released like the (N73 ME V 3 .0638.0.0.30 , 30-10-2006) and they have it working on the new Music Edition N73 WHY CANT EVERYBODY HAVE IT !

It sounds like it is an application that is related to 3 specifically, does it enable you to go to their website directly ( I dont know about 3) and download stuff and surf around? If it is you have to set up your access point again manually maybe by using the application on the phone called settings wizard. If not you should be able to get the settings from 3 .

Did you change the theme back to one of the originals before you started ?And what happens when you open up NSS and just read your product code without doing anything else ?does it show the new product code? I had trouble with NSU trying to recognize the phone initially but if the theme and code are correct it should update.Maybe in india the NSU isnt set up to upgrade yet ?

HEY BRO !!! when you try to connect to NSU have changed your theme back to one of the origonal nokia themes before you connect because it will just hang like you said.

If you have changed to the one of the original themes and it still hangs try changing the product code to a known # for your region with nemesis service suite V1.0.38.5

guys, got a question that has been puzzling me...

Please correct me if i am wrong,

I am from Singapore, i connect to NSU, it says "no updates available"
Is it because my product code is from Singapore that's why the updates are not available?

Once i changed my code using NSS to Europe code, i managed to secure an update from NSU. Am i right to say that this update is from Europe and is different from those in other regions? Is the firmware universally the same no matter which region u are from? or specific region got its own firmware?

and that changing the product code is only to allow u to download the firmware from that particular region?

I don't quite understand the logic behind changing the code and updating the firmware, although i know Nokia restricts us to our own regions update with the product code.

Also, why are there different versions... ie: Music version, non-music version?

I am unable to find anywhere on the Nokia Australia website which discusses this.

Your in luck be1975 go back to pages 13-20 of this thread and read it all before you do your update.

I posted this over their.!!
Start from the last post on page 39 .
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well... I am now the owner of a new N73. I am quite impressed!

I will cut to the nitty gritty: *#0000# brings up the following:

V 2.0628.0.0.3
27-07-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (37.01)

This is the old firmware right? Where do I get the update/s from? And is it legit updates?

My phone seems to be running perfectly at the moment, I don't want anything to screw it up!!!

I thought i should post this as I posted this earlier before on another forum so everybody is informed.

----------------------------------* * ----------------------------------* * ----

So if you want to wait for your network provider to authorize nokia to update your firmware you have to wait. The product code of your phone prohibits the NSU from updating the phone that is why you have to change the product code. The product codes I imagine are given to the service providers so they can have control over which firmware is installed. Seems stupid to me if their is better version of firmware out their that nokia have released like the (N73 ME V 3 .0638.0.0.30 , 30-10-2006) and they have it working on the new Music Edition N73 WHY CANT EVERYBODY HAVE IT
----------------------------------* ----------------------------------* ----------------------------------* -------
My personal opinion update the firmware as it runs allround better.
----------------------------------* ----------------------------------* ----------------------------------* --------

And this :

Oh I tried upgrading a number of times but NSU kept saying no firmware upgrade available but i forgot to change the theme back to an original nokia one befire i started. Did that and it all went well ,so change your theme to stock before upgrading

I recently updated again with this product code for AUSTRALIA /PACIFIC 0539349.

Try downloading and installing sms accelerator . this seemed to speed up my phone even flitting through the menu.
When in music application go to settings> equalizer>exit. This is the only way of stopping it running in the background.

most probably ur phone is dead mate...m sry to say this but this hold true in ur case......try restarting ur phone by removing the battery...if that doesnt help try using the other method of flashing using phoenix.......or else take it to nokia service centre

I just got my N73, and I was wondering. First often people tell me that my voice sounds distorted (like a robot) which usually lasts for a day or so, then goes back to normal, wondering why.

And also my buddy has the Nokia N73 Music player edition. We snap the same exact pictures with all the same settings and he gets a much clearer image. How is that possible?

PS: also, i'm trying to update but I dont have the best of connections, and the update is 64mb. I wish I could download it seperatly and then install it, but on the site it connects you and downloads the update in real time. unfortunatelly I get half way thru and my connection give up or something cause I get an error message from the updater. is there anyway to manually download and install updates?

I bought my N73 just a few days ago. Came with only V3.0638.0.0.1 30.10.2006 firmware.
Frankly with that large file to DL online & the slow, unreliable access we have here, I wouldn't wanna risk any interruption during DL and my N73 dying on me!!
Definitely not worth that!

Can those of you (who have updated their N73 firmware to V 3.0649.0.0.1) pls list the changes (improvements or otherwise) after making the update?

What are the differences? Why is there an upgrade so soon? Just ONE mth after the V3.0638.0.0.1...

Yr info would certainly help those who have not to decide whether it's worth doing so or not. TQ in adv.

SGFunGuy, to chk firmware, pls key in *#0000#

Beside doing updates on your own Online (FOC!), updates can also be done at Nokia Care Centres (need 2pay mayb?)...Safer, too!

Hi there,

I have a N73 and tried to upgrade with NSU .. but it said there was no new firmware, so i read the threads about changing the product code and getting N73 ME edition.. and i did that and upgraded.. worked very well..

now 1 week later i found out about a new firmware.. so i tried to upgrade again.. the NSU finds the firmware.. downloads it.. but the update doesnt work.. it said INTERNAL MODULE ERROR.. so i thought i messed up my phone

but it was still working.. so i tried again.. and same error..

now this is how i did.. i shutdown my phone (well I restarted it) .. and connected the cable.. then tried the NSU again.. and it worked.. i think it has to do with the cable or something.. not really sure.. but so you know the internal module error can be overridden

hope this helps you.. and sorry for my lousy english.. not too familiar with the language
