Hi, i found out, how to change a resolution of java games. You have to open a *.jar file for example in WinRar and than open file "manifest.mf" from folder "META-INF". Than write there this in the end:

Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416

Former is original resolution of game and the latter isresolution of your phone. Than save and run in a phone :partyman:

With me that does so completely not bang unfortunately yet. The N73 has and that changed on 240 x 320. Then stored and packed a ZIP Datei. Then renamed in Jar. But he says if I send the Jar Datei onto the mobile:
invalid JAR Datei
Can one help me?

tonydeli7
11th November 2006, 13:10
open the jar(with winrar)->open META-INF(directory)->open manifest.mf(drag it to your desktop and open it with notepad)-add the two lines Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208 (the original resolution of the game)
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416 (the resolution of you phone)->drag the edited manifest.mf back to your jar(in meta-inf directory)->close winrar->send to phone->enjoy

daonlychiggi
11th November 2006, 13:13

make sure u hv WinRAR. open up the .jar game with it by right-clicking on the file, open with --> WinRAR. go to "META-INF" folder and extract the "manifest.mf" file in der to wherever. open the extracted file by right-clicking on it, open with --> Notepad. check the "always use this program" box. then proceed with skopi's instructions. when ur done, drag it back into the "META-INF" folder. overwrite the previous file.
hope this helped. :)

If you are having problems with the games being too big on your screens then try changing the line
From
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208
to
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 240,320

Most of the java games for Symbian 9.1 are original size 240x320 and not 176x208

Keep the target line

Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416

Hope this helps

Hopefully this makes sense to all.

So final lines are

Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 240,320
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416

yes, 203x240 is not full screen, but it much better than 320x240, try both... u will see the different!!!

K3NT, I also calculated the 203x240 ratio to be the best and compared it to the 320x240 with Nightmare Creatures, and you're absolutely right.

There's only one problem:
The games which I succeded to convert were old 176x208 games using this:
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 203,240

BUT with newer games (for the s60v3) which have resolution of 240x320 that doesn't seem to work. :( ( using 240x320 as Original-Display-Size, ofcourse)
Zuma and Tennis are still to large and I can't see the bottom third of the game on my E61 :(
Is it possible that this method works only when enlarging, and not when reducing size of the display?
If not so (hopefully) do you know which settings should be used for 240x320 games?

Thanx!
Ra

i don't think that that is possible because i have read that this trick only works if you are enlarging the resolution, for example 176x208 to 240x320 or 352x416.... so it may not work if done from resolution 352x416 to 240x320.. :)

Okay, for all those guys who have a problem that the repacked .jar file don't want to install on the phone:

The .jar file is essentially a completely normal .zip file with .jar extension. So if you're using WinZIP to make the new file, just rename it to .jar. If you're using WinRAR (which you should coz it kicks butt):

- select everything you want to be in the new .jar file
- right click on it, select "Add to archive..."
- in the window that comes up, look at the middle: "Archive format", there is the option to change the format of the compression from .rar to .zip, change it to .zip!!! Very important, this is where all your problems coming from!!!
- look under that, "Compression method" should be set to "Normal", if it's not then change it to Normal
- don't touch anything else in the window, just hit OK!!

When it's done just rename the file, change the extension from .zip to .jar, and you can transfer straight away. ;)

Hope this make things a bit clearer.

I notice that some java games dont have the sentence that u said it would be...so how to change for those kind of games...add that sentence to the notepad or leave it alone...?

TUTORIAL] Changing Java Games Resolution
Hey guys, hope you find this interesting!

One of the few problems with having a phone with a nice big display is that many games do not display full screen. No problem! It's an easy fix that anyone can do and you'll be running full screen games on your phone in no time.

Note: This will work about 95% of the time on S60 3rd edition phone models. I have not tested it on other models but feel free. This will not work on phones with a landscape screen (E series). This will work with any MIDlet by the way, not just games.

Guide

1. Using an archiver such as WinRAR, open the jar file.

(IMG:[Only registered and activated users can see links])

2. Once you have opened the jar, you will see a folder called 'META-INF'. Open this folder.

(IMG:[Only registered and activated users can see links])

3. In the META-INF folder there will be one file called 'MANIFEST.MF'. Drag this file onto your desktop and open it in notepad.

(IMG:[Only registered and activated users can see links])

4. Now you must know 2 things to edit the file. First, you must know the original resolution of the game. Ususally this information can be found on the author's website. Second, you must know the resolution of your screen. Then type the following two lines at the end of the text in the MANIFEST.MF file:

Quote:
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: yyy,zzz

In the example above '[Only registered and activated users can see links]' represents the original resolution of the game. 'yyy, zzz' represents the resolution of your phone's display.

In the picture example below, the original game resolution is 176x208 and the target resolution of my screen (N80) is 352x416.

(IMG:[Only registered and activated users can see links])

5. Now save the changes in the MANIFEST.MF file and drag it back into the META-INF folder in your jar file to overwrite the old one.

(IMG:[Only registered and activated users can see links])

6. That's it! Now install the jar to your phone and enjoy your full screen game...

I would appreciate if anyone here could do the inverse process and test 325x416 resized games in cellphones as 3250, N73... (176x208 or 240x320)

DOES NOT WORK ON LANDSCAPE TYPE MOBILES! THX

i hope it works!

my way of converting big resolution games to 176x208 is really common sense
if i see this in the MANIFEST.MF file

Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416

i simply erase the whole modification. cos basically the game is already at 176x208 resolution. i managed to find a whole bunch of games doing this.

while changing the game resolution isnt easy for many, i suggest u try to find the game using SEARCH function, as many games have started coming specially for n73.

else u can still search for them in the modified games thread posted by *FAQ* and few others.

I just wanna ask. Will this "trick" be effective for s40 games as well? I tried to modify a game; "Knight Tale" from resolution 128, 160 into 128, 128, but I couldn't do so. Can you modify the game for me?

The resolution change thing works on CDLC 2.0 java programs. This is what I read in a document nokia once (I can't rememeber which document right now).

The point is, it's not really dependent on s40 or s60; it targets java platform applications.

One more thing: even if you succeed to change the resolution from 128x160 to 128x128 it will not be any use, since these two resolutions have a different aspect ratio. (128x128 is square, the other is a rectangle). So if you succeed to make this change you will lose pixels on one hand, and on the other hand the final image will be so distorted you'll never want to play the game.

That depends on the original resolution of the game / application. The 'Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size' should always be your phone resolution (176, 208 if I remember well) and the 'Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size' should be whatever the application original resolution is.

I understood that this trick works when enlarging the resolution (i.e. your device's screen resolution is bigger than the application's resolution). It may not work when trying to scale down.

Is there anyway to make the resolution change when the size of the screen changes? ie on the E90?

I wanna make an app called mxit change to the right resolution after opening and closing my E90, I was thinking that it's probs not possible to do it 4 .jar, only .sis?? Anyone know/wanna help?

Thanx ;)

Sorry.. I meant I wanna change the .jar file.. ...But I want it to be hmm.. dynamic.. Is it possible?

To change from 800x320 to 320x240 when I open the phone?

Well if you do such a big conversion than the image might display very badly...
Still worth trying...

8th November 2007, 21:39
Well mxit starts off fine if opened in the internal display... Doesn't look stretched or anything cos its more of a bg colour with jst an image in the middle that doesn't get resized.. Then when you close the phone, it stays at the same res so you can't read all the way to the end (big problem)... And the same goes for the opposite, if you open it on the external and then open up the phone it stays small... It's jst irritating when its like that.. I hav other apps that do the same sorta thing too :)

Anyways its seems like it'll turn out to be a biggish project so I'll jst work on it myself(mayb I'll tlk to the developers) ;) but thanx tp12 :) --This forum rox

open the jar(with winrar)->open META-INF(directory)->open manifest.mf(drag it to your desktop and open it with notepad)-add the two lines Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208 (the original resolution of the game)
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416 (the resolution of you phone)->drag the edited manifest.mf back to your jar(in meta-inf directory)->close winrar->send to phone->enjoy

i try but dosent work with my SE_v630i
those go only for nokia??

Anyone...? Please....? How do I change the game size if I'm using a Mac...? This is what I tried:

Instead of 'Notepad(PC)', I used 'TextEdit(Mac)' to open the manifest.mf file -> type in the 2 lines of text to change the size -> save -> close -> drag back to original folder -> closed all folders -> create archive(.zip).
But when I renamed it to .jar and uploaded it to my hp it said "invalid jar"....
Where did I go wrong...?

Thanks...

Hey bro, u seems to be an expert. R we able to find from anywhere overhere whereby it state all the resolution sizes of each individual model of nokia phone? Otherwise how would sone of us know what is our the resolution of the handset unless somebody did mention overhere in the forum before. Would appreciate if there is a compilation for that. Cheers. Happy New Year...

Yes it will work...
But it will not reduce the picture frame but actually cut the image to fit the resolution...

Maybe a no-brainer, but is it better to use original N80 games instead of editted ones? Or are the developers doing exactly the same as this edit, on their games? Because some games are very pixelated on my N80. Will that still be when I download the original version made for N80?

-=[tp12]=-
2nd February 2008, 05:44
Original N80 games will not have any pixel issue...
Were as modified games might have pixel problems...

Nice share. Works great. The only problem is when I don't know the original resolution. How to solve that? Thanks a lot anyway...Mansur.

i got a lot of java games installed before on my phone before then it was crash due to trojan viruses.. did someone experience the same?

now that i got another mmc i will again download a lot...

okay so now, there are alot of java games not quite Suitable on my N90 either it is working but only 1/4 of the screen only! i saw the tutorial on how to change the resolution... but i dont know what is the resolution of my N90.. does someone knew?

so if i already knew, what resolutions of java games am i spouse to download? i mean logically if i download a lower resolution and make it compatible on my N90, the game will suck!:exactly: right?
