any lights come on? does the HDD spin? or is it completely dead?

Hi, ive been looking at a dell latitude c600 for my mate. The laptop kept turning off at random points during the day. Diagnosed it to be a hard drive fault. The hard drive was grinding & corrupted a few of the sectors. Couldnt format the hard drive neither. Replaced with another ibm travelstar hard drive. All working fine now
