In my area, only 3 cells have EDGE.Once i know the id of those cells, i'm using Mini GPS to keep me informed when EDGE is active or not, for me to know the best moment to download files. The cool thing of MiniGPS is it shows a global message (with the text you want) when it's running in background.I've created 2 events: GPRS and EDGE (after distributing all nearby cells in the right groups). Then i can know the exact moment EDGE is active or not, it doesn't matter what app is running in foreground. The problem is MiniGPS allocates many chunks, etc, what drains RAM even when it's not active. Then i'd like to know if some1 knows of any other app that can also show a global message while running in background, to keep me informed of EDGE status based on cells IDs?

you can use nokia network monitor for s60 to know if the cell tower supports EDGE. But you have to check it from time to time to know the status. Also you can try using the app to lock the signal to a specific tower that supports EDGE. To know if the current tower supports EDGE, go2 options>change display>and type 0612
if edge is supported, it'll show 1 instead of 0 next to Edge.

I've been using Field Test Display to track EDGE status, that's why i could group cells and use MiniGPS as EDGE indicator.
The problem is in OS8 phones (like mine) there's a conflict between FTD app and GPRS connection:
if FTD is running, phone can't connect; and if phone is connected, FTD doesn't open.
But do you know how can i force the phone to be locked to a certain tower by using Netmonitor? If yes, how?
Thanks for you reply

Yes i'ts true, FTS has that bug also on my 6680, anyway a cool method could be check for gsm area text (cell info) simply checking it on your network settings, if you're lucky and your carrier supports it well you could check in which location you're locked. Maybe the next location hasn't the EDGE support and so you could notice it..
A better way could be a program to check the bandwith on up/dw always on top on the screen. You could notice easly if the connection works fast over EDGE or run slower on GPRS. Also u'll check how the application works..

Thank you very much for your reply, Barabba. But is there such application for S60 phones that allows user to monitor bandwidth with that indicator always on top on the screen?
