MXit is a message exchange program for your cell phone. That means you can chat to people on their PC’s and to other MXit users on their mobiles, from your mobile, anywhere in the world. Communication has never been easier.

With MXit, you can send a message of up to 2000 characters. It’s great for organizing a night out, or simply saying hello. And not only can you chat to other MXit users, but you can also connect to MSN messenger, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL messenger or Jabber communities.

You can download MXit for FREE. That’s right. It’s absolutely FREE. That’s because MXit runs on GPRS/3G. (The technology that connects your mobile to the Internet) Great way to cut down on your SMS bill, isn’t it?

MXit can be used anywhere in the world, as long as there is GPRS/3G coverage. So you can chat to friends overseas and tell them just how much you miss them for the same cost. Never thought you could do all that with your mobile, did you?

OK, let's go

MXit can be found on your mobile under ‘applications’ The name for this folder could differ from phone to phone, but normally this is where your mobile stores things like games.

Logging in for the first time?

1 To sign up, you have to register. It is very important that you do this correctly!
2 Fill in your phone number. Your privacy is not at stake here, so please use your own number, and fill it in correctly (for example: 083 000 0000, not 0027 83 000 0000, or +27 83 000 0000!)
3 Choose a personal PIN (something interesting, not 1234, or 1111!) Keep it a secret and don’t forget what it is!
4 Decide on a nickname that you would like to use (preferably not your real name).
5 Fill in your correct date of birth. (This is also very important, seeing that some MXit services have age limitations; you will not be allowed to access these services if you are under a certain age, or over it!).
6 Fill in your gender and location.
7 Go to ‘options’, and select ‘accept’. Welcome to our world, you are now officially part of the MXit family!

Chat now!

Don't get confused between the ‘menu’ and ‘chat’ options on your contacts page. The menu allows you to log out, change your profile, etc. The chat function on the other hand, selects the contact currently highlighted.

Start chatting to your friends right away

1 Both parties need to be registered MXit users.
2 In your contacts page select ‘menu’, then go to ‘add contact’.
3 Add your friend's number and nickname as a ‘MXit’ contact.
4 The next time you are both logged on, your buddy's nickname will be displayed in your contacts list with a green icon next to it - this means they are active (online).
5 Scroll down to your friend's nickname, select ‘chat’, and start talking!
