At the present time Condensed Matter Physics is the largest of the main subdivisions of physics. Its appearance in English is indeed long overdue.

Huntington Disease - A Bibliography and Dictionary for Physicians, Patients, and Genome Researchers
Publisher: ICON Group International, Inc. | ISBN: 0497112353 | edition 2007 | PDF | 122 pages | 1,51 mb

In March 2001, the National Institutes of Health issued the following warning: "The number of Web sites offering health-related resources grows every day. Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Huntington disease is indexed in search engines, such as [Only registered and activated users can see links] or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

The Most Important Fish in the Sea: Menhaden and America By H. Bruce Franklin
Publisher: Island Press 2007-04-13 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 1597261246 | PDF | 2.1 MB

In this brilliant portrait of the oceans’ unlikely hero, H. Bruce Franklin shows how menhaden have shaped America’s national—and natural—history, and why reckless overfishing now threatens their place in both. Since Native Americans began using menhaden as fertilizer, this amazing fish has greased the wheels of U.S. agriculture and industry. By the mid-1870s, menhaden had replaced whales as a principal source of industrial lubricant, with hundreds of ships and dozens of factories along the eastern seaboard working feverishly to produce fish oil. Since the Civil War, menhaden have provided the largest catch of any American fishery. Today, one company—Omega Protein—has a monopoly on the menhaden “reduction industry.” Every year it sweeps billions of fish from the sea, grinds them up, and turns them into animal feed, fertilizer, and oil used in everything from linoleum to health-food supplements. The massive harvest wouldn’t be such a problem if menhaden were only good for making lipstick and soap. But they are crucial to the diet of bigger fish and they filter the waters of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, playing an essential dual role in marine ecology perhaps unmatched anywhere on the planet. As their numbers have plummeted, fish and birds dependent on them have been decimatedand toxic algae have begun to choke our bays and seas. In Franklin’s vibrant prose, the decline of a once ubiquitous fish becomes an adventure story, an exploration of the U.S. political economy, a groundbreaking history of America’s emerging ecological consciousness, and an inspiring vision of a growing alliance between environmentalists and recreational anglers.

Ending the Tobacco Problem: A Blueprint for the Nation
Publisher: National Academies Press | ISBN: 0309103827 | edition 2007 | PDF | 388 pages | 4,2 mb

The nation has made tremendous progress in reducing tobacco use during the past 40 years. Despite extensive knowledge about successful interventions, however, approximately one-quarter of American adults still smoke. Tobacco-related illnesses and death place a huge burden on our society.
Ending the Tobacco Problem generates a blueprint for the nation in the struggle to reduce tobacco use. The report reviews effective prevention and treatment interventions and considers a set of new tobacco control policies for adoption by federal and state governments. Carefully constructed with two distinct parts, the book first provides background information on the history and nature of tobacco use, developing the context for the policy blueprint proposed in the second half of the report. The report documents the extraordinary growth of tobacco use during the first half of the 20th century as well as its subsequent reversal in the mid-1960s (in the wake of findings from the Surgeon General). It also reviews the addictive properties of nicotine, delving into the factors that make it so difficult for people to quit and examines recent trends in tobacco use. In addition, an overview of the development of governmental and nongovernmental tobacco control efforts is provided.
After reviewing the ethical grounding of tobacco control, the second half of the book sets forth to present a blueprint for ending the tobacco problem. The book offers broad-reaching recommendations targeting federal, state, local, nonprofit and for-profit entities. This book also identifies the benefits to society when fully implementing effective tobacco control interventions and policies.

Deadly Companions: How Microbes Shaped Our History
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0192807196 | edition 2007 | PDF | 256 pages | 2,61 mb

Ever since we started huddling together in communities, the story of human history has been inextricably entwined with the story of microbes. They have evolved and spread amongst us, shaping our culture through infection, disease, and pandemic. At the same time, our changing human culture has itself influenced the evolutionary path of microbes. Dorothy H. Crawford here shows that one cannot be truly understood without the other. Beginning with a dramatic account of the SARS pandemic at the start of the 21st century, she takes us back in time to follow the interlinked history of microbes and man, taking an up-to-date look at ancient plagues and epidemics, and identifying key changes in the way humans have lived - such as our move from hunter-gatherer to farmer to city-dweller - which made us vulnerable to microbe attack. Showing how we live our lives today - with increasing crowding and air travel - puts us once again at risk, Crawford asks whether we might ever conquer microbes completely, or whether we need to take a more microbe-centric view of the world. Among the possible answers, one thing becomes clear: that for generations to come, our deadly companions will continue to shape human history.

Family Handyman Magazine Editors, "Complete Do-It-Yourself Manual: Completely Revised and Updated"
Publisher: Readers Digest | 2005 | 528 Pages | ISBN: 0762105798 | PDF | 20 MB

This super-handy manual, first published in 1973, has received a major upgrade. Seventeen chapters' worth of fixer-upper opportunities are enhanced with more than 3,000 photos and illustrations that would look equally at home in an upscale home decorating catalogue. The first few chapters cover hand and power tools, fasteners and adhesives, and are enough to incite hardware envy among even dwellers of tiny apartments. There is strange beauty in the cutaway views of five different hollow-wall fasteners and the machinations of nine types of pliers. But homeowners are, of course, the real target audience, and an all-new section on Landscaping reflects this with entries on fences, water gardens and retaining walls. The plumbing section offers a mega-view of wastewater-treatment systems as well as a micro-exploration of unclogging a toilet. Another new section, Storage Projects, is full of cabinets and shelves that either "Swing-out" or "Fold-away." New technologies are generally overlooked in favor of meat-and-potatoes projects. For instance, a home satellite dish is pictured but not indexed or dwelled upon, while carpeting is charted, graphed and deconstructed in the extreme. Intriguing sidebars on wood refinishers (the fastest drying versus the safest), the financial benefits of renting specialty tools for a large drywall project and other subjects round out this must-have guide.

Interpreting Hong Kong's Basic Law: The Struggle for Coherence
Publisher: Palgrave Macmillan | ISBN: 0230600417 | edition 2007 | PDF | 280 pages | 1,07 mb

On July 1, 2007, Hong Kong celebrated its tenth anniversary as a special administrative region of China. It also marked the first decade of its unique constitutional order in which Hong Kong courts continue to apply and develop the common law but the power of final interpretation of the constitution lies with the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress. This book is a collection of chapters by leading constitutional law experts in Hong Kong who examine the interpretive issues and conflicts which have arisen since 1997. Intervention by China in constitutional interpretation has been restrained but each intervention has had significant political and jurisprudential impact. The authors give varied assessments of the struggle for interpretive coherence in the coming decade.

Ancient Poetic Etymology: The Pelopids: Fathers and Sons (Palingenesia. Schriftenreihe f r Klassische Altertumswissenschaft)
Publisher: University | ISBN: 351508939X | edition 2008 | PDF | 257 pages | 6,7 mb

This book has grown out of the research on the etymology of Homer and his Scholiasts, which Dr. H. Peraki-Kyriakidou and I have conducted. This collaboration has yielded a vast amount of material from which derive some of the references I make in this book. My teaching, especially my graduate course on Etymology from Homer down to his scholiasts, has also brought me into contact with a wealth of corroborating diachronic material, and given me a strong stimulus for a closer examination of ancient poetic etymology. I have endeavored to adumbrate the specificities and the elusiveness of such a complex enterprise as the poetic
etymologizing in a number of articles whose corollaries I briefly summarize in this book.

The Digital Photography Book by Scott Kelby
Publisher: Peachpit Press; 1st edition (August 23, 2006) | ISBN: 032147404X | CHM | 8,5 Mb | 240 pages

Scott Kelby, the man who changed the "digital darkroom" forever with his groundbreaking, #1 bestselling, award-winning book The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers, now tackles the most important side of digital photography - how to take pro-quality shots using the same tricks today's top digital pros use (and it's easier than you'd think).
This entire book is written with a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: "If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, 'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You d say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."

This isn't a book of theory—it isn't full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts: this is a book of which button to push, which setting to use, when to use them, and nearly two hundred of the most closely guarded photographic "tricks of the trade" to get you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos with your digital camera every time you press the shutter button.

Here's another thing that makes this book different: each page covers just one trick, just one single concept that makes your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you'll learn another pro setting, another pro tool, another pro trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. Theres never been a book like it, and if you're tired of taking shots that look "OK," and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, "Why don't my shots look like that?" then this is the book for you.

Scott Kelby
The Digital Photography Book, Volume 2
Peachpit Press | 2008 | ISBN: 0321524764 | 240 pgs | PDF | 148 Mb

This book truly has a brilliant premise, and here’s how Scott describes it: “If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, ‘When I use my flash, the background behind the person I’m shooting turns black. How do I fix that?’ I wouldn’t give you a lecture on flash ratios, or start a discussion on flash synchronization and rear curtain sync. I’d just say “Lower your shutter speed to 1/60 of a second. That should do it” Well, that’s what this book is all about: you and I out shooting where I answer questions, give you advice, and share the secrets I’ve learned just like I would with a friend—without all the technical explanations and techie photo speak.”

Each page covers a single concept on how to make your photography better. Every time you turn the page, you’ll learn another pro setting, tool, or trick to transform your work from snapshots into gallery prints. If you’re tired of taking shots that look “okay,” and if you’re tired of looking in photography magazines and thinking, “Why don’t my shots look like that?” then this is the book for you.

This isn’t a book of theory—full of confusing jargon and detailed concepts. This is a book on which button to push, which setting to use, and when to use it. With nearly another 200 of the most closely guarded photographic “tricks of the trade,” this book gets you shooting dramatically better-looking, sharper, more colorful, more professional-looking photos every time.

Publisher: No Starch Press; 1st edition | 2004 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 1886411832 | PDF | 30 MB

No other computer inspires devotion like a Mac. The largest and most fervent subculture in computing, Mac fans come in all shapes and sizes, but never waver in their dedication. Like fans of a football team or rock band, Macintosh fans have their own subculture, with clearly defined obsessions and rites of passage.

The Cult of Mac takes you inside the world of the Mac addict. Meet fans who get Mac tattoos and haircuts, people who travel across the globe to attend Apple Store openings, and counterculture icons who love the Mac. Discover the realm where old Macs become aquariums or bongs, origami Macs are made out of paper, and where the Macs of the future are envisioned not by suits in Cupertino, but by Mac heads all over the world. Visit the gatherings of the Mac tribe, from the big trade shows to tongue-in-cheek lookalike contests of Mac celebrities. And explore the little-publicized underbelly of Mac culture, including erotic fiction featuring Steve Jobs and the influence of mind-altering drugs on the Mac’s famous interface.

Whether you’re a casual observer, a mild Mac fan, or a hardcore member of the cult, join journalist and loyal Mac user Leander Kahney as he exposes all sides of Mac fanaticism, from the innocuous to the insane.

Carles Broto, Jacobo Krauel, "Architecture on Sports Facilities"
Gingko Press; illustrated edition edition | ISBN: 8493400777 | September 2005 | JPG | 240 pages | 83.5 Mb

When designing sporting facilities the architect must consider an almost endless list of fundamental considerations: capacity, seating configuration, concession areas, multiple entrances, amenities for the teams and media and, last but not least, type. Will the structure be multi-purpose or used for a single sporting discipline? Will it be a stadium, an arena, an auditorium? All of these issues and more are covered in detail in this rare title devoted to the Architecture of Sports Facilities. It presents a range of cutting-edge designs that display exceptional skill in combining aesthetics with functionality, beauty with practicality, and ease of use with ease of access. Due to its complex nature the design of sports facilities rightly occupies a category of its own. So detailed and thorough is this book that it too deserves a category of its own.

Daab, "Restaurant Design"
daab | ISBN: 3937718028 | September 30, 2004 | JPG | 399 pages | 63 Mb

Product Description
There are a few planning tasks that so clearly show the effects of globalization as the design of restaurants. This often has less to do with the uniformity of international companies such as Starbucks and McDonalds, but rather individual concepts - the main theme of this book - with diversity like ever. Contemporary Restaurant Design, however, seems to be taking less and less notice of regional culture, at least in cities. Whether Mark Newson creates a property in London or New York, the design displays his signature, unmistakeably and regardless of location. Just as chefs around the world amalgamate different national and regional cuisines into "fusion", so are new worlds of special experience constructed, with unusual combinations of style, colors, materials and lighting. This publication presents 57 examples of this phenomenon, from cities all over the world. On 400 pages with more than 600 vivid colour images and sketches, it shows a diverse range of the newest developments in restaurant design from around the world - a wonderful source of inspiration.

Richard Brookhiser "George Washington on Leadership"
Basic Books | English | 2008-05-12 | ISBN: 0465003028 | 272 pages | PDF | 1 MB

America's first president was also one of its strongest leaders--from the military, to government, and to business.

FIRST IN WAR, FIRST IN PEACE,
FIRST IN LEADERSHIP.

Richard Brookhiser's revolutionary biography, Founding Father, took George Washington off the dollar bill and made him live. Now, with his trademark wit and precision, Brookhiser expertly examines the details of Washington's life that fullscale biographies sweep over, to instruct us in true leadership. George Washington on Leadership is a textbook look at Washington's three spectacularly successful careers as an executive: general, president, and tycoon. Brookhiser explains how Washington maximized his strengths and overcame his flaws, and inspires us to do likewise. It shows how one man's struggles and successes 200 years ago can be a model for leaders today.

Washington oversaw two startups--the army and the presidency. He chaired the most important meeting in American history--the Constitutional Convention. Washington rose from being a third son who was a major in the militia, to one of the most famous men in the world. At every stage in his career, he had to deal with changing circumstances, from tobacco prices to geopolitics, and with wildly different classes of men, from frontiersmen to aristocrats. Washington's example is so crucial because of the many firsts he is responsible for.

Over the last 20 years, Michael Eric Dyson has become one of America’s most visible—and quotable—public intellectuals. Whether in his sixteen books, or in countless newspapers, television and radio appearances, or on stages, podiums, and pulpits across the world, Dyson has spun an enchanting web of words that has caught the attention of the masses and elites alike. He has weighed in on a myriad array of topics – from faith to fatherhood, and from race to sex, as well as sports, manhood, gender, music, leadership, politics, language, love, justice, literature, suffering, death, hope, relationships and much, much more.
Can You Hear Me Now?, offers a sampling of Dyson’s sharp wit, profound thought, and edifying eloquence on the enduring problems of humanity, from love to justice, and the latest topics of the day, including race and the presidency. It is both revealing and relevant, and at once thoughtful provoking and uplifting. Whether he is writing about Jay-Z or Barack Obama, addressing racial catastrophes or opportunities, or speaking about religion or the felicities of King’s rhetoric, Dyson’s intellect shines with insight and inspiration.

Can You Hear Me Now? captures Dyson’s incredible facility with words, and his prodigious intelligence, at a time when he has gained greater fame as a public intellectual, university professor, best-selling author, and most recently, as one of the first prominent blacks to endorse President Barack Obama. The time is ripe for his wit, wisdom and worldview, and this book is Dyson’s most accessible compendium of thinking on a broad range of topics that haunt and shape the nation.

Basic Books | English | 2009-04-13 | ISBN: 0465003079 | 432 pages | PDF | 1,5 MB

In Masters of Sex, critically acclaimed biographer Thomas Maier offers an unprecedented look at William Masters and Virginia Johnson, their pioneering studies of intimacy, and the sexual revolution they inspired. Masters and Johnson began their secret studies in a small Midwest laboratory, and soon became the nation’s top experts on sex. Over the course of more than forty years, they analyzed and explained the secrets of orgasm, emotional fulfillment, and sexual dysfunction. But they divorced after twenty years amid a clash of success, betrayal, and jealousies.
Weaving interviews with the notoriously private William Masters and the ambitious Virginia Johnson, Maier offers a titillating portrait of the legendary couple. Entertaining, revealing, and beautifully told, this groundbreaking book sheds light on the eternal mysteries of desire and intimacy, and their complicated roles in the American psyche.

High Performance Computing (RISC Architectures, Optimization & Benchmarks)
398 pages | O'Reilly; 1 edition (June 1, 1993) | 1565920325 | PDF | 8 Mb

Even if you never touch a line of code, High Performance Computing will help you make sense of the newest generation of workstations. A must for anyone who needs to worry about computer performance, this book covers everything, from the basics of modern workstation architecture, to structuring benchmarks, to squeezing more performance out of critical applications. It also explains what a good compiler can do--and what you have to do yourself. The author also discusses techniques for improving memory access patterns and taking advantage of parallelism. Another valuable section of the book discusses the benchmarking process, or how to evaluate a computer's performance. Kevin Dowd discusses several of the "standard" industry benchmarks, explaining what they measure and what they don't. He also explains how to set up your own benchmark: how to structure the code, how to measure the results, and how to interpret them.

Ladislaus Marton, William F. Hornyak, "Problems and Solutions for Students (Methods of Experimental Physics, Vol.8)"
Academic Press Inc | 1969 | ISBN: 0124759084 | 281 pages | PDF | 7,9 MB

FOREWORD
In conversation with the volume editors of our series, the idea came up
to add a volume containing problems in experimental physics. Discussions
with many physicists confirmed the desirability of providing graduate
students in physics with problems oriented toward the feasibility, limits of
accuracy, and of precision of experiments, the kind of information an
experiment is likely to yield, signal-to-noise ratio and expected signal level
of the experiment, the general considerations about the design of an
experiment, etc.
The present volume is the result of our endeavor to select relevant
problems. We consider it as a first step in the direction indicated above and
would like to invite comments and further examples. Hopefully enough,
new material will be available in the foreseeable future to justify issuing a
revised edition. In the meantime, we wish to express our heartfelt thanks
to our contributors and to all those whose kind cooperation and advice
helped us to put the volume together.

Hardware and Computer Organization
512 pages | Newnes; Har/DVD edition (May 20, 2005) | 0750678860 | PDF | 7 Mb

Hardware and Computer Organization is a practical introduction to the architecture of modern microprocessors for students and professional alike. It is designed to take practicing professionals "under the hood" of a PC and provide them with an understanding of the basics of the complex machine that has become such a pervasive part of our everyday life. It clearly explains how hardware and software cooperatively interact to accomplish real-world tasks.

Instead of simply demonstrating how to design a computer's hardware, it provides an understanding of the total machine, highlighting strengths and weaknesses, explaining how to deal with memory and how to write efficient assemble code that interacts with and takes best advantage of the underlying hardware.

Additionally, the book has a unique emphasis on facilitating the ability to make real engineering decisions in industry when working with anything from simple 8-bit microprocessors in embedded applications to PCs and workstations. It demystifies the link between the behaviour of the code and the operation of the machine, while helping engineers and students to better understand the limitations imposed by finite speed and resources.

Kazuo Haga, Josefina C. Fonacier, & Masami Isoda "Origamics: Mathematical Explorations Through Paper Folding"
World Scientific Publishing Company | English | 2008-09-11 | ISBN: 9812834907 | 152 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

The art of origami, or paper folding, is carried out using a square piece of paper to obtain attractive figures of animals, flowers or other familiar figures. It is easy to see that origami has links with geometry. Creases and edges represent lines, intersecting creases and edges make angles, while the intersections themselves represent points. Because of its manipulative and experiential nature, origami could become an effective context for the learning and teaching of geometry.

In this unique and original book, origami is an object of mathematical exploration. The activities in this book differ from ordinary origami in that no figures of objects result. Rather, they lead the reader to study the effects of the folding and seek patterns. The experimental approach that characterizes much of science activity can be recognized throughout the book, as the manipulative nature of origami allows much experimenting, comparing, visualizing, discovering and conjecturing.

The reader is encouraged to fill in all the proofs, for his/her own satisfaction and for the sake of mathematical completeness. Thus, this book provides a useful, alternative approach for reinforcing and applying the theorems of high school mathematics.

Contents: A Point Opens the Door to Origamics; New Folds Bring Out New Theorems; Extension of the Haga s Theorems to Silver Ratio Rectangles; X-Lines with Lots of Surprises; Intrasquares and Extrasquares ; A Petal Pattern from Hexagons?; Heptagon Regions Exist?; A Wonder of Eleven Stars; Where to Go and Whom to Meet; Inspiration of Rectangular Paper.

The Confederate Army 1861-65: Louisiana and Texas v. 3 (Men-at-arms 430) By Ron Field
Publisher: Os Publishing 2006 | 48 Pages | ISBN: 1846030315 | PDF | 13 MB

The states of the Confederacy in 1861 fielded many units of volunteer troops wearing a remarkably wide variety of uniforms, often reflecting foreign influences. In a spirit of independence, many states also issued their own uniform regulations on the outbreak of the War Between the States, and these non-standard uniforms were often retained until well into the course of the war. The cosmopolitan history of these Gulf states led to a wide range of influences from France, Italy, Germany and Mexico on their uniforms. This book studies the archival and pictorial evidence for the infantry, cavalry and artillery of Louisiana and Texas, featuring illustrations and fascinating early photographic portraits.

Embracing the East: White Women and American Orientalism
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0195145348 | edition 2002 | PDF | 256 pages | 2,46 mb

As exemplified by Madame Butterfly, East-West relations have often been expressed as the relations between the masculine, dominant West and the feminine, submissive East. Yet, this binary model does not account for the important role of white women in the construction of Orientalism. Mari Yoshihara's study examines a wide range of white women who were attracted to Japan and China in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and shows how, through their engagement with Asia, these women found new forms of expression, power, and freedom that were often denied to them in other realms of their lives in America. She demonstrates how white women's attraction to Asia shaped and was shaped by a complex mix of exoticism for the foreign, admiration for the refined, desire for power and control, and love and compassion for the people of Asia.

The Neoproterozoic Timanide Orogen Of Eastern Baltica
Publisher: Geological Society of London | ISBN: 1862391726 | edition 2006 | PDF | 255 pages | 34,09 mb

The Neoproterozoic Timanide Orogen of eastern Baltica extends from the high Arctic to the southern Ural Mountains and represents significant crustal growth of the northeastern European continental margin in the late Neoproterozoic. This volume, a co-operation between Western European and Russian scientists within the framework of the European Science Foundation's EUROPROBE programme, provides a comprehensive overview of the orogen and represents a new synthesis of Timanian Orogeny. It includes: the pre-Timanian passive margin deposits of the northern and northeastern flank of the East European Craton; the magmatic, metamorphic and structural evolution of the orogen across the Timan Mountain and Pechora Basin regions to the Ural Mountains; the post-Timanian platform successions, important for interpreting the timing of orogeny and the return to an early Palaeozoic passive margin setting; and the extension of the orogen northwards to Novaya Zemlya. Relationships westwards to the Caledonides of Greenland and Scandinavia and eastwards to the Baikalides of Siberia are also treated.

Jan L.G. Dietz, "Enterprise Ontology: Theory and Methodology"
Publisher: Springer; 1 edition | 2006 | 240 Pages | ISBN: 3540291695 | PDF | 2.38 MB

If one thing catches the eye in almost all literature about (re)designing or (re)engineering of enterprises, it is the lack of a well-founded theory about their construction and operation. Often even the most basic notions like "action" or "process" are not precisely defined. Next, in order to master the diversity and the complexity of contemporary enterprises, theories are needed that separate the stable essence of an enterprise from the variable way in which it is realized and implemented.

Such a theory and a matching methodology, which has passed the test of practical experience, constitute the contents of this book. The enterprise ontology, as developed by Dietz, is the starting point for profoundly understanding the organization of an enterprise and subsequently for analyzing, (re)designing, and (re)engineering it. The approach covers numerous issues in an integrated way: business processes, in- and outsourcing, information systems, management control, staffing etc.

Researchers and students in enterprise engineering or related fields will discover in this book a revolutionary new way of thinking about business and organization. In addition, it provides managers, business analysts, and enterprise information system designers for the first time with a solid and integrated insight into their daily work.

About the Author
Jan L.G. Dietz is professor in Information Systems Design at Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) since 1994, after having been professor in MIS at the University of Maastricht for 6 years. He holds a MSc in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science, and has practitioned business automation for 10 years. He has published over 200 scientific and professional articles as well as several books. His current research interests are in Enterprise Engineering, Enterprise Architectures and Enterprise & Information Systems Ontology.

Music in Shakespeare: A Dictionary
Publisher: Continuum | ISBN: 0826478468 | edition 2006 | PDF | 528 pages | 1,1 mb

Musical references, allusions to music, and music stage directions abound in Shakespeare, ranging from simple trumpet flourishes to sophisticated, philosophical allegory. Music in Shakespeare: A Dictionary identifies all musical terms found in the Shakespeare canon. An A-Z of over 300 entries includes a definition of each musical term in its historical and theoretical context, and explores the extent of Shakespeare's use of musical imagery across the full range of his dramatic and poetic work. Music in Shakespeare also analyses the usage of musical instruments and sound effects on the Shakespearean stage, providing descriptions of the instruments employed in the Elizabethan and Jacobean theatres. This is a comprehensive reference guide for scholars and students with interests ranging from the thematic and allegorical relevance of music in Shakespeare's works to the history of performance. It is also aimed at the growing number of directors and actors concerned with recovering the staging conditions of the early modern theatre.

"Where does the black *** man go where he can see himself reflected back to himself in all the complex ways in which he exists in the world?" asks the chair of the African American Studies department at Northwestern University. In this collection of 10 smart, provocative essays, McBride explores, from varying vantage points (interracial *** male porn; the essays of Cornel West; the racial implications of Ellen DeGeneres's coming-out show; the way the hair and clothing guidelines for Abercrombie & Fitch employees ensure an almost all-white staff), the tenuous position of a clear, distinct, *** black male presence and voice in cultural discourse and argues for an end to the relative silence.

Trajectories in Near Eastern Apocalyptic: A Postrabbinic Jewish Apocalypse Reader
Publisher: Brill Academic Publishers | ISBN: 9004130950 | edition 2006 | PDF | 278 pages | 13,38 mb

Modern treatments of Jewish apocalyptic usually terminate their discussions of this literature with the triumph of Rome over nationalist rebels at the time of the Second Jewish Revolt (132-135 CE). They hence fail to appreciate the impact of the subsequent rise of scriptural authority for the Abrahamic religions and the renewed vitality of the apocalyptic genre as a favored literary vehicle for the expression of social and cultural concerns by the major Near Eastern religious communities during the second half of the first millennium CE.

Arun Handa, “System Engineering for IMS Networks”
Newnes | 2008-11-04 | ISBN: 0750683880 | 360 pages | PDF | 6,7 MB

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the foundation architecture for the next generation of mobile phones, wireless-enabled PDAs, PCs, and so on, delivering multimedia content (audio, video, text, etc.) over all types of networks. It is essential for network engineers/administrators and telecommunications engineers to not only understand IMS architecture but to also be able to apply it at every stage of the network design process. This book will contain pragmatic information on how to engineer IMS networks as well as an applications oriented approach, for engineering and networking professionals who are responsible for making IMS "play" in the real world.

* Describes the convergence of wireless IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) with other networks, including wireline and cable
* Discusses building interfaces for end users and IMS applications servers
* Explores network management issues with IMS

Shopping for Bombs: Nuclear Proliferation, Global Insecurity, and the Rise and Fall of the A.Q. Khan Network
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0195304950 | edition 2006-09-01| PDF | 304 pages | 1 mb

A.Q. Khan was the world's leading black market dealer in nuclear technology, described by a former CIA Director as "at least as dangerous as Osama bin Laden." A hero in Pakistan and revered as the Father of the Bomb, Khan built a global clandestine network that sold the most closely guarded nuclear secrets to Iran, North Korea, and Libya.
Here for the first time is the riveting inside story of the rise and fall of A.Q. Khan and his role in the devastating spread of nuclear technology over the last thirty years. Drawing on exclusive interviews with key players in Islamabad, London, and Washington, as well as with members of Khan's own network, BBC journalist Gordon Corera paints a truly unsettling picture of the ultimate arms bazaar. Corera reveals how Khan operated within a world of shadowy deals among rogue states and how his privileged position in Pakistan provided him with the protection to build his unique and deadly business empire. It explains why and how he was able to operate so freely for so many years. Brimming with revelations, the book provides new insight into Iran's nuclear ambitions and how close Tehran may be to the bomb.
In addition, the book contains startling new information on how the CIA and MI6 penetrated Khan's network, how the U.S. and UK ultimately broke Khan's ring, and how they persuaded Pakistan's President Musharraf to arrest a national hero. The book also provides the first detailed account of the high-wire dealings with Muammar Gadaffi, which led to Libya's renunciation of nuclear weapons and which played a key role in Khan's downfall.
The spread of nuclear weapons technology around the globe presents the greatest security challenge of our time. Shopping for Bombs presents a unique window into the challenges of stopping a new nuclear arms race, a race that A.Q. Khan himself did more than any other individual to promote.

Cosmopolitan Justice
Publisher: Westview Press | ISBN: 0813365562 | edition 2001 | PDF | 240 pages | 22,24 mb

Increasing global economic integration and recent military interventions in the name of human rights have forced questions of global justice into political discussions. In presenting a systematic account of global duties of justice, Cosmopolitan Justice departs from many contemporary accounts that take the scope of justice to be limited to the state or nation. Is the unequal distribution of wealth across the globe just? Are the most indebted countries obliged to pay back their loans to international financial institutions? Does respecting state sovereignty prohibit intervening in the affairs of other states? What is the moral basis of international law? Cosmopolitan Justice takes on these questions, and much more.

One Hundred Semesters: My Adventures as Student, Professor, and University President, and What I Learned along the Way
Publisher: Princeton University Press | ISBN: 0691127255 | edition2006-07-31 | PDF | 368 pages | 1 mb

In One Hundred Semesters, William Chace mixes incisive analysis with memoir to create an illuminating picture of the evolution of American higher education over the past half century. Chace follows his own journey from undergraduate education at Haverford College to teaching at Stillman, a traditionally African-American college in Alabama, in the 1960s, to his days as a professor at Stanford and his appointment as president of two very different institutions--Wesleyan University and Emory University.Chace takes us with him through his decades in education--his expulsion from college, his boredom and confusion as a graduate student during the Free Speech movement at Berkeley, and his involvement in three contentious cases at Stanford: on tenure, curriculum, and academic freedom. When readers follow Chace on his trip to jail after he joins Stillman students in a civil rights protest, it is clear that the ideas he presents are born of experience, not preached from an ivory tower. The book brings the reader into both the classroom and the administrative office, portraying the unique importance of the former and the peculiar rituals, rewards, and difficulties of the latter.Although Chace sees much to lament about American higher education--spiraling costs, increased consumerism, overly aggressive institutional self-promotion and marketing, the corruption of intercollegiate sports, and the melancholy state of the humanities--he finds more to praise. He points in particular to its strength and vitality, suggesting that this can be sustained if higher education remains true to its purpose: providing a humane and necessary education, inside the classroom and out, for America's future generations.

Social Movements and Networks: Relational Approaches to Collective Action (Comparative Politics) By Mario Diani, Doug McAdam
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0199251770 | edition 2003 | PDF | 368 pages | 16,4 mb

For the first time in a single volume, leading social movement researchers map the full range of applications of network concepts and tools to their field of inquiry. They illustrate how networks affect individual contributions to collective action in both democratic and non-democratic organizations; how patterns of inter-organizational linkages affect the circulation of resources both within movement milieus and between movement organizations and the political system; how network concepts and techniques may improve our grasp of the relationship between movements and elites, of the configuration of alliance and conflict structures, of the clustering of episodes of contention in protest cycles.Social Movements and Networks casts new light on our understanding of social movements and cognate social and political processes.

Why I'm Like This: True Stories
Publisher: William Morrow | ISBN: 0688178502| edition 2002-07-01 | PDF | 224 pages | 1 mb

I wonder if there is any way I can tell this story and have it seem like I did it in the name of those dolphins that get caught in the tuna nets.Meet Cynthia Kaplan, whose debut collection of personal stories is so much fun to read because of her complete and utter willingness to tell the God's honest truth.
And it isn't pretty. Kaplan takes us on a hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking journey through her unique, uncensored world, from her first bungled romantic encounters (No, really, what was I supposed to do?) to her terrifying tropical honeymoon. From her first, unsung theatrical experiences at summer camp (I opened the script and saw that I had only one line for the entire first half of the play, and that line consisted of one word, wawa) to a starring role in an independent film (Two months after the film screens in New York, my father-in-law passes away...and it is intimated to me more than once that seeing me locked in an erotic embrace with a black woman hastened his decline.). We also meet Kaplan's family, almost lovingly rendered in her razor-sharp prose: Her gadget-obsessed father; her mother, who, if you should want to know, is Fine; her eccentric Florida grandmother (I want you to have this. And this. One day. When I'm dead.); her New York grandmother, with whom she discovers she shares an innate sense of spite (Seething is something one can reasonably do for a lifetime, if one is so inclined); her fearless husband, whom she engages in an ongoing battle over which of them is the most popular person in their apartment; and finally, her vengeful, power-hungry, one-year-old son.Kaplan has a wonderfully original voice, almost painfully precise, and yet, it's a lot like the one in our heads, the one that most of us are only willing to listen to late at night, in the dark, maybe locked in a closet. So what a relief it is that someone finally admits that she is afraid of nearly everything under the sun, including moths; that she is jealous even of people whose lives are on the verge of collapse; and that she has, at times, tried to pass for a gentile (I didn't like carrying the burden of two thousand years of persecution around while everyone else looked so fancy free.) After reading Why I'm Like This, you might just take a good look at your life, (or at the life of a truffle pig, as Kaplan does), and realize that even though it's not perfect, it's yours, and that's something.

From Computer to Brain
Publisher: Springer | ISBN: 0387955267 | edition 2002 | PDF | 368 pages | 4,7 mb

Biology undergraduates, medical students and life-science graduate students often have limited mathematical skills. Similarly, physics, math and engineering students have little patience for the detailed facts that make up much of biological knowledge. Teaching computational neuroscience as an integrated discipline requires that both groups be brought forward onto common ground. This book does this by making ancillary material available in an appendix and providing basic explanations without becoming bogged down in unnecessary details. The book will be suitable for undergraduates and beginning graduate students taking a computational neuroscience course and also to anyone with an interest in the uses of the computer in modeling the nervous system.

Peter D. Kramer "Freud: Inventor of the Modern Mind"
Eminent Lives | English | 2006-12-01 | ISBN: 0060598956 | 224 pages | PDF | 1,2 MB

Often referred to as "the father of psychoanalysis," Sigmund Freud championed the "talking cure" and charted the human unconscious. But though Freud compared himself to Copernicus and Darwin, his history as a physician is problematic. Historians have determined that Freud often misrepresented the course and outcome of his treatments—so that the facts would match his theories. Today Freud's legacy is in dispute, his commentators polarized into two camps: one of defenders; the other, fierce detractors.

Peter D. Kramer, himself a practicing psychiatrist and a leading national authority on mental health, offers a new take on this controversial figure, one both critical and sympathetic. He recognizes that although much of Freud's thought is now archaic, the discipline he invented has become an inescapable part of our culture, transforming the way we see ourselves. Freud was a myth-maker, a storyteller, a writer whose books will survive among the classics of our literature. The result of Kramer's inquiry is nothing less than a new standard history of Freud by a modern master of his thought.

Steven A.Frowine, "Orchids For Dummies"
For Dummies | 2005 | ISBN: 0764567594 | 298 pages | PDF | 8,1 MB

The fun and easy way to grow orchids
Orchids, as anyone who has read Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief or has seen the movie Adaptation knows, inspire a passionate following. And their popularity is rising: according to the USDA, more than 12.7 million orchids were sold in the U.S. last year. Brimming with black-and-white illustrations and 8 pages of color photos, this friendly guide introduces would-be orchid fanciers to today's most popular and intriguing orchid varieties—and shows step by step how to select healthy plants at a nursery or commercial grower, cultivate them successfully at home, promote blooms, create beautiful orchid displays, and even produce hybrids.

Alan Koch (Lincoln, CA) is owner of Gold Country Orchids, a company that breeds award-winning miniature and compact Cattleyas and Phalanopsis. His orchids appear regularly at North American orchid shows, and he delivers talks at orchid societies worldwide.

From the Author
Believe it or not, orchids — the most glamorous and spectacular flowering plants in the world, nature’s true masterpieces — are easy to grow! You just need to give them what they need. And their requirements are not difficult to meet — adequate light, humidity, water, and ventilation. Sure, there are other nuances, like fertilizing, repotting, insect and disease control, but none of these are daunting. I’ve been growing and blooming orchids in my home for almost 40 years — mostly not in a greenhouse, but under lights or in the windowsill. Helping you achieve success with these glorious plants is my pleasurable mission. If you follow the steps I lay out in this book, you will grow orchids that thrive. Everything in this book comes from many years of my own trials and errors — not from theories about what should happen or what orchids might need. Sure, I’m a professional horticulturist, but probably more importantly, I’m a hands-on, sometimes fanatical, home orchid grower. I don’t share with you anything in this book that I haven’t tried myself or am sure that works. Years ago, the methods of orchid culture were well-guarded secrets, hoarded by commercial growers and private estate gardeners. That’s not the case here. This is a tell-all book where all secrets are revealed. So you can now enter this wonderful world of orchids without fear, knowing that you’re armed with the information you need to be successful and enjoy one of the most rewarding and fascinating, lifelong hobbies that you’ll ever experience — growing orchids.

Making Sense of Aids: Culture, Sexuality, and Power in Melanesia
Publisher: University of Hawaii Press | ISBN: 0824831934 | edition 2008 | PDF | 320 pages | 2,19 mb

In Melanesia, rates of HIV infection are among the highest in the Pacific and increasing rapidly, with grave humanitarian, development, and political implications. There is a great need for social research on HIV/AIDS in the region to provide better insights into the sensitive issues surrounding HIV transmission. This collection, the first book on HIV and AIDS in the Pacific region, gathers together stunning and original accounts of the often surprising ways that people make sense of the AIDS epidemic in various parts of Melanesia. The volume addresses substantive issues concerning AIDS and contemporary sexualities, relations of power, and moralities - themes that provide a powerful backdrop for twenty-first century understandings of the tensions between sexuality, religion, and politics in many parts of the world.

The Archaeology of Identity presents an overview of five of the key areas which have recently emerged in archaeological social theory: gender, age, ethnicity, religion and status. This book reviews the research history of each area, and the different ways in which they have been investigated, as well as offering potential ways forward. Emphasis is placed on exploring the ways in which material culture is structured by these aspects of individual and communal identity, with a particular stress on social practice.A wealth of scholarship is brought together in this book, which provides an integrated approach to identity not commonly found in similar studies. This book is suitable for students and readers interested in issues of identity, issues pertinent today, as well as social scientists dealing with similar aspects in sociology, anthropology and history.

LTCM was the fund that was too big to fail, the brightest star in the financial world. Review:
... fun read ... has the same feel as the James Burke PBS show from the '80s that connected people and events in enlightening ways.
Review:
Best book on LTCM for those who like technical detail and mechanics. This is closer to the microstructure of how everything went down, and compares favourably to "When Genius Failed" for those in the industry.
Very readable, well written, covers all the best topics, and again has the best detail.

The Hungarian Revolution 1956 (Elite 148) By Erwin A. Schmidl, László Ritter
Publisher: Os Publishing 2006 | 64 Pages | ISBN: 184603079X | PDF | 7 MB

The Hungarian Revolution of October 1956 was the most important armed rising against the USSR during the Cold War. The spontaneous demonstrations by students and workers were joined by Hungarian soldiers, and the first Soviet troops sent in to crush the insurgence were forced to withdraw. However, after a brief hopeful pause, stronger Soviet forces invaded again, bring with them tanks, paratroopers and NKVD units. The rebels were crushed. Published to mark the 50th anniversary of this uprising, this book uses new sources and provides an interesting reassessment five decades after the revolution.

Due to easy access of computer, various numerical models for predicting the ground behavior have been proposed, and some of them have already been used in practice. The soil parameters required in such numerical models, however, are seldom measured directly from laboratory or in situ tests, instead the parameters are usually estimated from empirical correlations based on the index properties.

Bruce Kogut "Knowledge, Options, and Institutions"
Oxford University Press | English | 2008-03-15 | ISBN: 0199282536 | 400 pages | PDF | 1,9 MB

Bruce Kogut's writing has sketched a theory of human motivation that sees managers as social, often altruistic, sometimes as selfish, who care about their colleagues and their status among them. For the first time this book collects together key pieces that show how this view works in
application to practical managerial issues, such as technology transfer and licensing, joint ventures as options, and the diffusion of ideas and best practices in the world economy.

In an extensive introduction to these chapters, Kogut grounds this view in recent work in neurosciences and behavioural experiments in human sociality. On this basis, he provides a critique of leading schools of thought in management, including the resource based view of the firm cognition, and
experimental economics. He proposes that people are hardwired to learn social norms and to develop identities that conform to social categories. This foundation supports a concept of coordination among people that is inscribed in social communities. It is this concept that leads to a theory of
the firm as derived from social knowledge and shared identities. Kogut argues that the resource based view of the firm is only a view and it fails as a theory because it lacks a behavioural foundation. If it were to choose one, the choice would be between knowledge and organizational economics.
Similarly, he argues that recent statements regarding cognition do not confront the age-old question of shared templates. If it did, it too would have to confront a theory of social knowledge. The author then proposes that this foundation is essential to an understanding of norms and institutions
as well. Thus, we are moving into a period in which rapid advances in neuroscience increasingly lead to an integrated foundation for the social sciences.

This opening chapter is the gateway to the collected essays, which assemble the author's published articles on knowledge, options, and institutions. The book ends on the most recent work on open source software and generating rules. The chapter on open source discusses how new technology is
changing the face of innovation.

Another important argument is furnished by the certain use of terracotta plates as acroteria. Pausanias mentions such acroteria on the Stoa Basileios on the agora of Athens. Pliny says that such works existed down to his day, and speaks of their great antiquity. Fortunately a notable example has been preserved in the acroterium of the gable of the Heraion at Olympia, a great disk of clay over seven feet in diameter. It forms a part, says Dr. Dorpfeld, of the oldest artistic roof construction that has remained to us from Greek antiquity. That is, the original material of the acroteria was the same used in the whole covering of the roof, namely terracotta. The gargoyles also, which later were always of stone, were originally of terracotta. Further we find reliefs in terracotta pierced with nail-holes and evidently intended for the covering of various wooden objects; sometimes, it is safe to say, for wooden sarcophagi. Here appears clearly the connection that these works may have had with the later reliefs in marble.

Mindtraps: Mastering the Inner World of Investing By Roland Barach
Publisher: Irwin Professional Pub 1988-04 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 1556230877 | PDF | 11 MB

Hamlet summarized it all by saying: "Nothing is so bad-but thinking makes it so." Alas; Poor Yorick, Hamlet and you the Stock Market Investor. Universal questions asked by Market Investors when they lose money is, "why me, how did I get into this position, or what should (could) I have done differently?" To Roland Barach, the answers to these unanswered questions are to be found in Mindtraps.

Mindtraps consists of 88 "Reasons Why" people tend to loose in the market. Reasons selected range from the obvious: wishful thinking (mindtrap #57) to the more obscure as framing (mindtrap #82). The book is divided into 15 sections ranging from fear, greed (The Basics) to mastering yourself, the enemy within. Mindtraps appropriate to each topic are referenced.

Readers at first may be overwhelmed by the number of mindtraps and wonder if market "success" is even a remote possibility. The advantage obtained by reviewing the litany of mindtraps is that one becomes more aware of the many (false) premises we base our investment decisions on. Awareness fosters vigilance which can result in avoiding yesterday's mistakes in the market and eventually developing one's own basis for "intelligent" market decision making.

Roland Barach claims to be both a practicing psychologist and `active' stock market investor. He may be both. However, from the book one forms the impression that he is more psychologist than investor. While Mindtraps has numerous stock market
anecdotes the non-market interpretations are generally stronger. Some readers may experience deja vu when reading the book and ask is this a book on psychology or the stock market? Yes!, is the answer to this question. However, as Mr. Barack would probably agree one's investing decisions are closely tied to their psychological makeup.

For the reader looking for instant riches, secret formulas or promises of market success this is not the book. To those desirous of developing their own trading programs or wanting to analyze their loses this is the book. Readers will have to decide which mindtraps are dominating their thinking while avoiding the distraction of the others which may not have as strong an influence on their thinking.

The book makes an excellent reading assignment for students of the market who are trying to determine why they "went wrong" or for those wishing to develop the "perfect" trading program and desirous of knowing and avoiding pitfalls facing the faceless multitude of the "other" investors.

Recommended by Dr. Van K Tharp in his book "Trade your Way to Financial Freedom" in page 65.

Traditional Archery from Six Continents: The Charles E. Grayson Collection By Charles E. Grayson; Mary French; Michael J. O'Brien
Publisher: University of Missouri Press 2007-10-21 | 280 Pages | ISBN: 0826217516 | PDF | 6.8 MB

As a major hunting tool and weapon, the bow changed human history around the world, and its diverse forms reflect the cultures that adopted it. Those variations can be seen in the Charles E. Grayson Archery Collection housed at the University of Missouri - Columbia Museum of Anthropology, one of the largest and most comprehensive assemblages of archery-related materials in the world. This handsome book drawn from that collection offers a unique look at archery as it has been practiced through the ages. Drawing on a collection of more than five thousand bows, arrows, and associated paraphernalia, "Traditional Archery from Six Continents" presents color photographs and descriptions of some three hundred items - including quivers, thumb rings, and more - that represent traditional archery practices and customs from around the world. From the Chinese "monkey bow" to the English longbow, the artifacts are organized by region, taking in equipment from Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, and Europe used over the past five hundred years. The book's introduction provides an overview of traditional archery and its nomenclature, and chapter essays situate the items in their historical, cultural, and technological contexts. Plate descriptions note materials, construction methods, dimensions, and temporal and cultural affiliations. The sharp, detailed photographs will enable users to identify the geographic or cultural origins of the pieces by visual comparison. Additional illustrations show how archery equipment has been used in various settings such as hunting, warfare, and sport. These superb representations from a masterful collection constitute a complete introduction to worldwide archery and mark the first wide-ranging survey of European and non-European archery equipment ever available. "Traditional Archery from Six Continents" will be the standard reference work in the study of archery, indispensable for students of material culture or general readers interested in the history of this timeless art.

About the Author
Charles E. Grayson is a physician who has studied archery as a historian, bowyer, and hunter. Now retired, he lives in Clatskanie, Oregon, and continues to participate in archery competitions. The Epistle to the Romans (Galaxy Books) By Karl Barth
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA 1968-12-31 | 576 Pages | ISBN: 0195002946 | PDF (not OCR) | 18 MB

This volume provides a much-needed English translation of the sixth edition of what is considered the fundamental text for fully understanding Barthianism. Barth--who remains a powerful influence on European and American theology--argues that the modern Christian preacher and theologian face the same basic problems that confronted Paul. Assessing the whole Protestant argument in relation to modern attitudes and problems, he focuses on topics such as Biblical exegesis; the interrelationship between theology, the Church, and religious experience; the relevance of the

Is This Any Way to Run a Democratic Government? By Stephen J. Wayne
Publisher: Georgetown University Press 2004-05 | 191 Pages | ISBN: 1589010051 | PDF | 1.5 MB

Has our system of checks and balances between the three branches of our federal government undergone changes for good or ill over the years since the Constitution was set as the cornerstone of our nation? How stand our political traditions, our personal freedoms, our purported equality, our sense of governance "of, by, and for the people"? Are we the democratic nation we set out to be, or do we have a distance to go to achieve this ideal? Alternatively, is approaching a democratic ideal desirable today in the light of the smaller, more integrated, and dangerous world in which we live?

IS THIS ANY WAY TO RUN A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT? examines the theory and practice of American democracy and the dichotomy that currently exists between them. The contributors assess both the reasons--and the consequences--of this division between the theory of democracy and how it is played out in actuality. Focusing on the here and now, this book is about the institutions, process, and politics of government: how well they work; whether they meet the criteria for a viable democratic system; and the extent to which they contribute to good public policy.

As we begin the 21st century, with rancorous political partisanship and threats to domestic security and tranquility at an all-time high, IS THIS ANY WAY TO RUN A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENT? asks us to think seriously about the state of our much-heralded democracy, and whether or not our political system can respond to the pressing needs of a new era without jeopardizing the basic values and beliefs that underlie its very foundation.

Light Zone City: Light Planning in the Urban Context By Christa van Santen
Publisher: Birkhäuser Basel 2006-04-21 | 127 Pages | ISBN: 3764375221 | PDF | 29 MB

The face of the nocturnal metropolis is marked decisively by light, and the number and variety of the light sources is increasing to the point of "light terror.” A well-lit urban space can be very inviting, giving residents and visitors a sense of well-being and security. A successful lighting design can also give the city at night an identity of its own and accentuate architectural qualities.

In this book, the author embodies her many years of experience as a practitioner and teacher of lighting design. In preparation, she visited ten European cities — including Paris, Brussels, Berlin, London, Budapest, Vienna, and Amsterdam — with different urban situations. This has enabled her to present different planning and design tasks systematically and to illustrate specific solutions. In addition to articulating basic planning rules for the outdoor lighting of buildings, traffic routes, and squares, she presents and elucidates new artificial lighting systems and outdoor lamps with the help of examples.

Truth of the Stock Tape: A Study of the Stock and Commodity Markets With Charts and Rules for Successful Trading and Investing: William D. Gann
Lambert Gann Pub | ISBN: 093909312X | 1996-06 | PDF (OCR) | pages | 1.05 Mb

In addressing you on the subject of investing your surplus funds, I might state that there is no other subject which I could select that so closely concerns your welfare and regarding which you might receive valuable assistance from my instructions. In the United States a stupendous sum, reaching into millions of dollars, is wasted annually in foolish speculations and unwise investments. This senseless waste can be traced to one and only one source, namely, lack of knowledge. Men and women who would not attempt to treat the slightest ailment, or even adjust so common a thing as a kitchen faucet, but would hand each difficulty over to its respective specialist, the doctor or the plumber, will on the spur of the moment and without the slightest preparation, undertake the investment of thousands of dollars in enterprises about which they understand absolutely nothing. Is it any wonder then that they lose? I offer you suggestions and advice in the science of speculation and investment in the same spirit as the physician. He would not think of guaranteeing you perpetual life or insuring you against the common ills to which the flesh is heir. But in your difficulties he brings to your aid the accumulated experience of his profession, and a skill and knowledge which required years to accumulate and is ready for your instant use. I do not offer you a beautiful theory which will not work in practice, but give you invaluable advice, which if followed, will insure success in practical everyday Wall Street speculations and other fields of investment. It has been well said that a writer who writes first for remuneration and secondly because he believes what he writes, will never achieve enduring fame, and that the salesman who does not believe in his goods will never make a success. I believe in the theory and rules that I have laid down in this book for you to follow, because I have tested and proved them. It is my object in this work to facilitate and focalize the essential principles for practical use. My knowledge comes from over twenty years' experience, in which I have traversed the rough and rugged road that the inexperienced trader's foot must press before he reaches the goal. Hence my object in writing this book is to give to the public something new and practical, not theory alone which would fail in practice. Read this book carefully several times; study each chart and subject thoroughly, and a new light and knowledge will come to you every time you read it. If I succeed in teaching only a few to leave wild gambling alone and follow the path of conservative speculation and investment, my work will not have been in vain and I will have been amply repaid for my efforts.
--W.D. GANN.

Summary: Overkill on great ideas
Rating: 4
If you are a researcher of Gann you will probably be intersted in this book. It has 1 rule that isn't discussed in his other books. This rule tested over S&P 500 from 1950 to 1971 gives a 2% increase in annual return. The rule he describes involves finding tops but I went through and applied the rules to finding bottoms. The only thing I don't like about it is that it goes way overboard talking about the same thing over and over and over and over to the point I'm skipping over some of the examples. This made it a very boring book to read and he could have left much out and still got his point across.

Summary: ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS YOU CAN READ ON TRADING STOCKS
Rating: 5
This is very easy to read yet highly informative! The amount of useful trading concepts is unbelievable for a book which was written so long ago. Despite its age it remains the single best stock market related book I have read. This book is the best book written by W.D. Gann. Jesse Livermore's book and Market Wizards are also highly recommended!

Principles of Mobile Communication
Springer; 2 Edition (October 18, 2006) | ISBN: 0792379985 | 776 Pages | 11 MB | PDF

Principles of Mobile Communication, Second Edition is an authoritative treatment of the fundamentals of mobile communications. The book stresses the "fundamentals" of wireless and mobile communications engineering important for the design of "any" wireless system. The book differs from others in the field by stressing mathematical modeling and analysis. It includes many detailed derivations from first principles, extensive literature references, and provides a level of depth that is necessary for graduate students wishing to pursue research on this topic. Its focus will benefit students taking formal instruction and practicing engineers who are likely to already have familiarity with the standards and are seeking to increase their knowledge of this important subject.
Special features of this new edition: + New sections on block and turbo coding, CDMA soft handoff and power control (including analysis), MLSE co-channel demodulation and interference cancellation, and transmit diversity basics. + Updated discussion of cellular systems and standards, and spread spectrum, including spreading codes, signal power, and tone interference analysis. + New treatment of cellular link budget and capacity, orthogonal signaling and variants, linearized GMSK, and expansion of OFDM. + A new section on macrodiversity TDMA cellular architectures and expanded treatment of cluster planned hierarchical TDMA cellular architectures. + Additional coverage of radio propagation modeling to include base station reception, as well as a more detailed treatment of multipath-fading simulation models and techniques. + Numerous additional homework problems throughout, and much more. Principles of Mobile Communication, Second Edition has been specifically developed as a textbook for graduate-level instruction and as a reference book for practicing engineers. The book contains sufficient background material and literature references for the novice, yet enough advanced material for a comprehensive graduate-level course.

The Black Watch (Men-at-Arms): : Charles Grant, Michael Youens
Osprey Publishing | ISBN: 0850450535 | 1971 | PDF (OCR) | 40 pages | 16.57 Mb

This book details the uniforms, equipment, history and organisation of the Black Watch, from the American War of Independence through to 1952. The regiment's service in the Napolonic Wars, the Crimea, India, Egypt and South Africa and World War 1 and 2 are all covered. Uniforms are shown in full colour artwork.

In the wake of the Jacobite rebellions, companies of trustworthy Highlanders were raised from royal clans to protect the populace, deter cattle stealing and guard against any possible Jacobite incursion. Soon after its formation, the companies organized into a regiment of foot known famously as the 'Black Watch', the name thought to derive from their dark-coloured tartans and their role to 'watch' the Highlands. This book explores the uniforms, equipment and history of the Black Watch, from their involvement in the battles of Fontenoy and Ticonderoga in the mid-18th century, through to the Korean War of the 1950s.

Fundamentals of Engineering Supplied-Reference Handbook: National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying
Professional Pubns Inc | ISBN: 9992762616 | 2001-06 | djvu (ocr) | 176 pages | 2.15 Mb

During its August 1991 Annual Business Meeting, the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) voted to make the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination an NCEES supplied-reference examination. Then during its August 1994 Annual Business Meeting, the NCEES voted to make the FE examination a discipline-specific examination. As a result of the 1994 vote, the FE examination was developed to test the lower-division subjects of a typical bachelor engineering degree program during the morning portion of the examination, and to test the upper-division subjects of a typical bachelor engineering degree program during the afternoon. The lower-division subjects refer to the first 90 semester credit hours (five semesters at 18 credit hours per semester) of engineering coursework. The upper-division subjects refer to the remainder of the engineering coursework.

Since engineers rely heavily on reference materials, the FE Supplied-Reference Handbook will be made available prior to the examination. The examinee may use this handbook while preparing for the examination. The handbook contains only reference formulas and tables; no example questions are included. Many commercially available books contain worked examples and sample questions. An examinee can also perform a self-test using one of the NCEES FE Sample Questions and Solutions books (a partial examination), which may be purchased by calling (800) 250-3196.

The examinee is not allowed to bring reference material into the examination room. Another copy of the FE Supplied-Reference Handbook will be made available to each examinee in the room. When the examinee departs the examination room, the FE Supplied-Reference Handbook supplied in the room shall be returned to the examination proctors. The FE Supplied-Reference Handbook has been prepared to support the FE examination process. The FE Supplied-Reference Handbook is not designed to assist in all parts of the FE examination. For example, some of the basic theories, conversions, formulas, and definitions that examinees are expected to know have not been included. The FE Supplied-Reference Handbook may not include some special material required for the solution of a particular question. In such a situation, the required special information will be included in the question statement.

Women on Top (How real life has chenged women's sexual fanasies)
Publisher: Hutchinson | ISBN: 0091753082 | edition 1991 | PDF | 449 pages | 1,7 mb

In this update of My Secret Garden , her ground-breaking 1973 exploration of women's sexual fantasies, Friday demonstrates that while women of the '60s and '70s were likely to imagine themselves as sexual submissives, those of the '80s and '90s fantasize being in charge of the erotic situation. She remains a hearty proponent of masturbation, contending that it teaches women to be at ease with their bodies and the pursuit of sexual pleasure. Her findings are based on patterns found in the enthusiastic, often erotically charged letters she elicited from women aged 14 to 61 and transcribes here. The respondents, most in their mid-20s and diverse in upbringing, marital status and sexual preference, envision themselves as seductresses, dominatrixes, exhibitionists, nurturers and men. First sexual experiences are recalled, confirmed heterosexuals admit fascination with lesbian acts, a former nun talks about her change of plans, an occasional dog gets in on the action. This absorbing, titillating and empowering feminist book is also a ribald bedside companion. First serial rights to Glamour; Literary Guild alternate; author tour.

Flames of War Stars & Stripes: Intelligence Handbook on US Armored and Infantry Forces By Phil Yates
Publisher: Battle Front Miniatures 2005 | 74 Pages | ISBN: 0958253625 | PDF | 25 MB

The badge of the Is1 Infantry Division was a large red ' 1' on a green background, giving the Division its nickname— 'Big Red One*. The Division consisted of three infantry regiments, the 16th 18th and 26th. The 16th and 18th Infantry Regiments had a long history having fought in the American Civil War. the Spanish American War. and the First World War. The history of the 26,h Infantry Regiment was nearly as illustrious. It was formed in 1901 and had fought in the Philippines and in the First World War. where these regiments First came together as a permanent division.
When Germany invaded Poland in 1939 and sparked the Second World War. the Is1 Infantry Division was undermanned and scattered across a variety of barracks. It was hurriedly brought up to strength along with the three other divisions then in existence (Germany had over a hundred divisions ready for battle!) The National Guard was called up for federal service and new divisions were authorised as fast as troops could be trained to man them.
In 1942 the Division was sent to England, where it trained for the invasion of Europe. However, in November 1942. the Big Red 1 was sent to North Africa instead.

Suddenly master’s-level degree programs are springing up at schools throughout the world, and certificate programs are being offered as well. IT IS NO DOUBT BY THE "INSTITUTES*' THAT THE reputation of Calvin as a theologian stands or falls. The work is said to contain all Calvin and the whole of Calvinism, and its writer is commonly regarded as a man of one book. Pressed far enough, this judgment would leave little justification for a volume devoted to the Treatises. Doumergue, judicious as usual, redresses a balance when he writes 1: "To know Calvin truly and completely, his thought, character and personality, one must consult not one source but three: his Institutes, his
Sermons and his Letters." But even when this has been said, one is as far as ever from an assessment of the place of Calvin's Treatises..

Critical Reading Workbook for the SAT

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Sharon Weiner Green, Mitchel Weiner, "Critical Reading Workbook for the SAT"
Barron's Educational Series | 2006-02-01 | ISBN: 0764133810 | 272 pages | PDF | 2,3 MB

Concentrating on the Critical Reading section of the newly structured SAT college entrance exam, this test-preparation workbook presents tips, questions, answers, and answer explanations for the section’s two main question types—sentence completion questions and reading comprehension questions—as well as extensive vocabulary review. Both the sentence completion and the reading comprehension exercises are organized according to level of difficulty and presented in three sections, labeled from A to C. Students who master Level C in both parts are well on the road to achieving a high Critical Reading score when they take the actual SAT. This new workbook replaces Barron's Verbal Workbook for the New SAT, 11th Edition.

Writing Workbook for the New SAT

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

George Ehrenhaft, "Writing Workbook for the New SAT"
Barron''s Educational Series | 2005-10-01 | ISBN: 0764132210 | 320 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

The totally restructured SAT college entrance exam that became effective in 2005 includes an entirely new and very important Writing Test, which consists of two main parts. First is a 25-minute period during which students must write an essay on a given topic. Later, students must answer multiple-choice questions that test their skill in correcting poorly-written sentences, finding mistakes in grammar and usage, and correcting mistakes in the first-draft version of a student essay. This manual familiarizes students with all aspects of the SAT Writing Test and presents review chapters and questions with answers that are designed to hone test-takers' skills. Also included is a helpful overview of the Writing Test and details on how student essays are scored. This manual presents five writing tests. The first introduces students to the test's format and the following four are similar to the actual SAT writing test in length and question types. All tests have answers and explanations, and come with instructions on how students can convert their practice test score to the familiar SAT scale of 200-800.

Hello Arsalansha, :D

Do you have I'm OK, You're OK, by Thomas A Harris?

Or any books on transactional analysis?

Transactional Analysis Approaches to Brief Therapy: What do you say between saying hello and goodbye? (Brief Therapies series)

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Keith Tudor "Transactional Analysis Approaches to Brief Therapy: What do you say between saying hello and goodbye? (Brief Therapies series)"
Sage Publications Ltd | 2002-03-29 | ISBN: 0761956808 | 238 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

`This book, edited by Keith Tudor (who is also one of the ten contributors) is excellent reading for a number of reasons: for those who know nothing about TA, it is a highly informative and readily accessible introduction. For those who read or studied it some time ago, it is an excellent refresher.

I am impressed by the diversity of people and applications of TA, and the developments outlined in this book are, certainly for me, cause for hope because, as well as offering frameworks for making simple sense of humans in action and human inaction TA is a complex and profound system that offers people a way of solving the problems of the present, re-evaluating the struggles of the past, and reshaping the future with permission and power based on a greater sense of self' - Nurturing Potential

`I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all therapists as enriching and interesting reading' - European Association for Transactional Analysis Newsletter

`It is a book which would offer helpful introductions to both the practice of transactional analysis, and the attitude needed when planning brief therapy of any kind' - The Jounal of Analytical Psychology

Of all the approaches to therapy, transactional analysis is arguably one of those most suited to time-limited work. At a time when short-term therapy is increasingly dominant as a form of practice, Transactional Analysis Approaches to Brief Therapy provides an insightful guide which both informs and challenges.

Rather than a single theory, TA has developed as a group of four schools which share a common philosophy, but place different emphasis on what occurs during the therapeutic process. Written by therapists at the leading edge of developments in TA, the book presents and differentiates each of these four approaches. Through transcripts and commentaries, it shows how theory applies to practice, for example in treating post-traumatic stress or in achieving a one-session cure. The book also includes a useful glossary of TA terms, as well as an appendix of Eric Berne's short script-questionnaire.

In some ways critical of the zeitgeist of short-termism and the commercial pressures for therapy to be brief, the book seeks a balance between the challenge TA offers as an actionistic approach to quick and efficient therapy and the importance of relationship in therapy which is time-conscious. It will be enlightening reading for all those training and those already trained as therapists and counsellors in TA.

Thomas A Harris "I'm OK, You're OK"
Avon | 1976-04-01 | ISBN: 038000772X | 320 pages | PDF | 1,4 MB

"Happy childhood" notwithstanding, most of us are living out the NOT OK feelings of a defenseless CHILD wholly dependent on OK others for stroking and care. By the third year of life, says Dr. Harris, most of us have made the unconscious decision I'M NOT OK-YOU'RE OK. This negative Life Position, shared by successful and unsuccessful people alike, contaminates our rational ADULT potential - leaving us vulnerable to the inappropriate, emotional reactions of our CHILD and the uncritically learned behavior programmed into our PARENT.
In personal Transactions, NOT OK people resort to harmful withdrawal, rituals, activities, pastimes, and games for getting needed strokes while avoiding painful intimacy with people they see as OK.
Dr. Thomas A. Harris' s pioneering work in Transactional Analysis has had a fundamental impact on our understanding of interpersonal behavior. In showing us how to make the conscious decision I'M OK-YOU'RE OK, he has helped millions of despairing people find the freedom to change, to liberate their ADULT effectiveness, and to achieve joyful intimacy with the people in their lives.

Hi :)
I have been followed this thread since long ago and I find this thread really useful and I want to start contributing here. I hope it's ok, I just want to share some great book I found :)

Here is for today

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Niall Ferguson makes a strong, compelling case for the development of money and banking as a catalyst for the advancement of civilization. Yet while some critics praised his clear, comprehensible writing, punctuated with anecdotes and historical details, others were nonplussed by his explanations and narrative detours. Several critics also bemoaned the book's choppy and uneven structure—an echo of the episodic, six-part television series it was meant to accompany. So it seems the UK critics liked the book less because they had seen the show. Though perhaps best suited to readers with a fundamental understanding of financial terms and theories, Ferguson's latest work provides valuable insight into the inner workings of the global economy, past and present. For interested readers, it demonstrates how our current fiscal meltdown fits into the bigger historical picture and laments humanity's perennial inability to learn from this history.

The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Military Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best of the Month, February 2009: Anyone who read Fiasco, Thomas E. Ricks's superb, bestselling account of the Iraq War through 2005, and has followed the war since has likely noticed that many of the heroes of that devastating book, the officers and analysts who seemed to understand what was going wrong in the war when the rest of the political and military leadership didn't, have since been put in charge, starting with General David Petraeus, the cerebral officer who took command in Iraq and led what became known as "the surge." Ricks, the senior Pentagon correspondent at the Washington Post, has stayed on the story, and he returns with his second book on the war, The Gamble: General David Petraeus and the American Adventure in Iraq, 2006-2008. As good (and influential) as Fiasco was, The Gamble may be even better, telling the remarkable story of how a few people inside and outside the Pentagon pushed the new strategy through against opposition across the political spectrum and throughout the military top brass, and then, even more remarkably, how soldiers put the difficult plan into action on the ground and managed to sharply reduce the chaotic violence in Iraq. But the story doesn't end there, and Ricks's bracing conclusion--that the American military, like it or not, will still have a necessary role in Iraq for years to come--makes it likely that this may not be the last book we have from him on the subject. --Tom Nissley

Angelena Boden, "Problem Behaviour (Management Pocketbooks)"
Management Pocketbooks | 1999 | ISBN: 1870471717 | 112 pages | PDF | 1 MB

As a victim of problem behaviour, I write with some feeling about how damaging people
negative choice of words, tone of voice and actions can be at a personal, professional
and corporate level.
Many of today’s employees live in fear of going to work and have serious stress-related
illnesses because their colleagues, managers and clients treat them badly.
We all have a responsibility to behave in a way that does not oppress or take away the

Marjorie E. Skillin & Robert M. ***, "Words Into Type (3rd Edition)"
Prentice Hall | 3rd Edition | 1974 | ISBN: 0139642625 | 607 pages | siPDF | 9.2 MB

From the Preface
In the years since its first publication, Words into Type has become a classic among style manuals, an invaluable reference source for many of the fine points of grammar, usage, style, and production methods. Writers, editors, copy editors, proofreaders, compositors, and printers have turned to Words into Type with the confidence that, whatever the problem, they would find help there.

The third edition of Words into Type provides an overview of the many processes of transforming the written word into type—from the preparation of the copy to the market-ready work.

For the writer, an understanding of the technical problems of copy-editing and typographical style may facilitate his preparation of the manuscript, while a knowledge of the various stages in production may explain what is happening during the seemingly interminable wait for the final printed and bound product.

For the editor, copy editor, compositor, proofreader, production writer, or printer, an understanding of the publishing processes outside his particular field may prove equally beneficial, while for the student this survey offers a practical introduction to the world of publishing.

Amazon.com Review
This is the definitive text for questions of manuscript protocol, copyediting, style, grammar, and usage. For those who find The Chicago Manual of Style a bit cumbersome and sometimes ambigous, Words Into Type will be a welcome reference guide. With its easy-to-use index and definitive explanations, this third edition makes life simpler for writers, editors, and proofreaders. You may never need to know about frontispieces and imprimaturs, but if you deal with words, this is a wonderfully edifying, reassuring fount of clarity and wisdom.

Undercover Sex Signals: A Pickup Guide for Guys
Publisher: Listen & Live Audio | ISBN: 1593161123 | edition 2007 | PDF | 137 pages | 18,7 mb

Guys are completely oblivious to the myriad hints and subtle indications of women who are dying to sleep with them, says Lowndes, who gives the lowdown on how guys can better execute their game by recognizing 26 different signals that women use to indicate potential sexual desire. Lowndes's underlying premise is that all women are desperately trying to get men's attentions whenever in public, but she really sticks to bars and clubs for her examples. Lowndes's writing style and voice do not help this audiobook. Her raspy and deep voice brings images of an older, cigarette-smoking woman, which is not a bad thing, but not particularly convincing to the audience (men who need to be convinced attractive women want them). While cheesy punch lines and excessive hyperbole may work well within the printed text, on audio these lines fall short and evoke eye rolls. A professional narrator might have overcome these inhibitors, but Lowndes's tone evokes the faux enthusiasm often encountered with salespeople. ACitadel Press paperback. (Oct.)

John Hyde, «USB Design by Example: A Practical Guide to Building I/O Devices»
John Wiley & Sons | ISBN: 0471370487 | 1999 | PDF | 370 pages | 19.28 MB

The Universal Serial Bus (USB) specification is a boon for users in that it makes the process of connecting peripherals to computers effortless, in most cases. As is often the case with user-friendliness, though, the cosmetic ease comes about as a result of behind-the-scenes complexity. USB Design by Example explains what USB means to hardware developers, taking an approach that combines academic elucidation of the official specification with some experimental setups. Though not everything a hardware developer could wish for, John Hyde's explanations represent a valuable supplement to the notably obtuse specification documents.

The Wahhabi Mission and Saudi Arabia (#2)
Publisher: I. B. Tauris | ISBN: 1845110458 | edition 2006 | PDF | 288 pages | 1,7 mb

This is a definitive and authoritative account of the conservative interpretation of Islam that is the official creed of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Wahhabism. Muslim critics have dismissed it as a heretical innovation that manipulated a backward people to gain political control. David Commins dismisses the clichés, examines the nature of Wahhabism, and offers original findings as to how Wahhabism rose to dominance in Arabia and projected its influence in the Muslim world. He also assesses the challenges that it faces from radical militants within the Kingdom.

An Introduction to Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics (#2)
Cambridge University Press | 2007-08-15 | ISBN: 0521865248 | 570 pages | PDF | 4 MB

This introductory textbook for standard undergraduate courses in thermodynamics has been completely rewritten. Starting with an overview of important quantum behaviours, the book teaches students how to calculate probabilities, in order to provide a firm foundation for later chapters. It introduces the ideas of classical thermodynamics and explores them both in general and as they are applied to specific processes and interactions. The remainder of the book deals with statistical mechanics - the study of small systems interacting with huge reservoirs. The changes to this second edition have been made after more than 10 years classroom testing and student feedback. Each topic ends with a boxed summary of ideas and results, and every chapter contains numerous homework problems, covering a broad range of difficulties.

Shapes: Nature's Patterns: A Tapestry in Three Parts (Natures Patterns)
By Philip Ball
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | 320 pages | 2009-05-15 | ISBN: 0199237964 | PDF | English | 9.18MB

Product Description:

Patterns are everywhere in nature--in the ranks of clouds in the sky, the stripes of an angelfish, the arrangement of petals in flowers. Where does this order and regularity come from? As Philip Ball reveals in Nature's Patterns: A Tapestry in Three Parts, this order creates itself. The patterns we see come from self-organization. Indeed, scientists have found that there is a pattern-forming tendency inherent in the basic structure and processes of nature, whether living or non-living, so that from a few simple themes, and the repetition of simple rules, endless beautiful variations can arise.
Part of a trilogy of books exploring the science of patterns in nature, Shapes looks at how shapes form. From soap bubbles to honeycombs, delicate shell patterns, and even the developing body parts of a complex animal like ourselves, the author uncovers patterns in growth and form in all corners of the natural world, explains how these patterns are self-made, and describes why similar shapes and structures may be found in very different settings, orchestrated by nothing more than simple physical forces. This book will make you look at the world with fresh eyes, seeing order and form in places you'd least expect.
