Hi everyone,
First of all:
Mods - Please move this post if you think it does not belong here. I think this is the best place for it.
Everyone - Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong at any time.
I've been reading (using?) this forum for quite some time now (4 months) and I found a lot of useful information and tools, and a lot of people willing to help, so I'd like to give that back with some information.
I'm from Argentina and purchased a Nokia N73 about 6 months ago. Every ad said N73, so I checked specs and found N73 to be compatible with 3G and videocall; however when I got it, I found out it was N73-5.
I had a Nokia 6020b before, and I knew the little changes in the model number could mean huge changes in the phone specs, so I got home and googled for N73-5. What a huge disappointment when I found out it was a third-world countries version of the original N73, with no 3G or videocall.
So, I decided to get as much information as possible for us users and owners of N73-5.
First of all, the only two differences I was able to find:
N73: supports 3G and videocall
N73-5: no support for 3G (and therefore no support for videocall).
Even though I found several forums to claim this difference to be both hardware and software wise, I think it is only software wise.
Why?
Because manufacturing two different versions (hardware wise) of the same phone would lead to higher production costs (to be honest with you, I don't think Nokia could ever be concerned about this :p)
Also, I've read in many places that several users where able to flash new FW version for N73 into N73-5 phones and got 3G (and videocall) enabled (of course this also depends on the services your network provides you).
"Technically" speaking we find the following differences:
Model: N73 Type: RM-133
while
Model: N73-5 Type: RM-132
Keep in mind that this implies the fact Product Codes will be different for each phone type.
I have had a hard time finding the best Product Code(s) for my phone (N73-5 RM-132), so you'll find belos the ones I found so far, along with their internal description and the latest FW version (and languages included):
0544094: Telecom Personal SP (Argentina); 2.0628.0.0.3; English, French, Portuguese Brazilian and Spanish
0529835: CUST. TRX LTA Nokia (Deep Plum); 4.0723.2.1.1; English, French, Portuguese Brazilian and Spanish
0529836: CUST. TRX US Nokia (Deep Plum); 4.0738.3.1.1; English, French, Portuguese Brazilian and Spanish
0542724: T-Mobile USA; 4.0726.2.1.1
0544093: Movistar Argentina SP; 3.0638.0.0.1
0542704: CTI Argentina SP; 2.0628.0.0.3
0529832: CUST.TRX.CHINA (MET.RED); 4.0723.2.1.1
0528512: CUST. TRX CHINA (Deep Plum); 4.0723.2.1.1
0539361: CUST. TRX CHINA IE; 4.0727.2.4.1
The first product code is the one on my phone; the others were gathered from different forums in the internet.
I can only assure the information for the first 3 codes ir 100% accurate, as I have checked it and tested it on my phone.
My N73-5 came with:
0544094: Telecom Personal SP (Argentina); 2.0628.0.0.3; English, French, Portuguese Brazilian and Spanish
I updated first to:
0529835: CUST. TRX LTA Nokia (Deep Plum); 4.0723.2.1.1; English, French, Portuguese Brazilian and Spanish
And finally (recently) updated to:
0529836: CUST. TRX US Nokia (Deep Plum); 4.0738.3.1.1; English, French, Portuguese Brazilian and Spanish
With the first update, both cameras in my phone got really bad (blurry pictures along with lot of "blue objects", even in sunlight!).
When I updated the second time (and last so far), the camera got a little better; but still some "blue objects" (however no more blurry pics!)
BTW, does anyone have any info on how to fix this? (if possible).
I searched everywhere but could only find people with the same issue, but no fix...
Another issue I have since my first FW update is that Smartphoneware Best Taskman 2.01 won't run; the screen blinks and then nothing happens. I e-mailed their tech support about a month ago and they said they have fixed that in the new version and are waiting to get it signed by Symbian.
Despite these two issues, everything else works just fine. This is by far the best phone I have ever had and used.
Some tips:
"Secret Codes" that work in this phone:
*#0000# - Display the software version, the date when the software was built and the phone model. In some cases, the phone model is not the one used by marketing. It is the internal model used inside Nokia. For example, RM-36 is the internal name of Nokia 6680.
*#06# - Display IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identify) of your phone.
*#92702689# (*#war0anty#) - Displays lifetimer.
*#7370# (*#RES0#)- Reset your phone to the default factory settings. Usually you will need this code when you want to reset your phone back to the same condition when you got it for the first time. When the phone ask for security code, the default one is 12345.
Warning: Before you do reset the phone, make sure that you don’t have important data. Your data on the phone memory will be lost once you reset it.
*#7780# (*#rst0*) - This will soft reset your phone. It is different from *#7370# because all data, like contacts, calendar and notes, are not removed. It will only reset the phone settings, such as profiles, themes and shortcuts. The default lock code is 12345.
Alternative (hard) reset:
Power off the phone.
While holding:
Call key (green) + * + 3
Power on the phone and keep on holding the keys.
*#2820# (*#BTA0#) - Display the Bluetooth device address of your phone.
Content Copier
Whenever you make a backup of your phone's content using Nokia PC Suite Content Copier, it will be saved to a file in the following path:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrador\Datos de programa\Nokia\ContentCopier\
with the date, phone brand, model and the file extension .nbu
i.e. 2007-10-24 Nokia N73.nbu
Nokia Software Updater (NSU)
Whenever you update your phone's firmware using Nokia Software Updater, a copy of the FW files will be kept in the following path:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Datos de programa\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A
you'll have several subfolders (one on each level) and finally you'll get to 6 files (maybe more in a different model?):
N73_x.xxxx.x.x.x_western_C00_PRD_cc.fpsx
N73_userarea_x.xxxx.x.x.x.U01
N73_rofx_x.xxxx.x.x.x_PRD.Vyy
RM132_[Only registered and activated users can see links]
RM132_[Only registered and activated users can see links]
RM132_[Only registered and activated users can see links]
[Only registered and activated users can see links] (7-digits number) is the Product Code
x.xxxx.x.x.x (only numbers) is the firmware version number
yy (2-digits number) is the Network Operator number
z (three digits number) is the ???
I have backed up these files in case they may be useful in the future (although I don't think so, as I'm not sure if these are the same files as the ones included in the Phoenix DataPackage).
I think that's all I have for now. If I find more information, I'll let you know.
Just a little request:
Does anyone have N73-5 RM-132 Phoenix Datapackages? I'd like to have all FW versions in Datapackages. I was not able to find them anywhere (I was able to find the oens for the regular N73 RM133).
Thanks, and I hope to keep on posting (if you find this useful).
Gonzalo
