The .rar is compressed. Portable is saying that the file size is smaller than others.

Thats a bad explanation so if anyone wants to elaborate, be my guest.

PORTABLE means NO NEED for installation .. just extract ..

and generally smaller in size so that it is PORTABLE! (can put in thumbdrive and go another comp and play without much hassle)

Usually games are heavily compressed for transport and sometimes that means ripping out the movies or music (called RIPS).

Sometimes the sounds are compressed into MP3 and on decompress the files are reconstituted so the sounds may not be so great quality. Same goes for textures, sometimes are converted to jpg and then re-constituted afterwards into the original files but with a slight quality loss.

Portable means you don't have to install it. It can be moved around and run from any machine with minimal effort. Sometimes you have to run a .reg file or something like that.

i'm also new to these portable stuffs... anyway i think you already got your answer, from the posts above...

files deleted? maybe yes for example counter strike, a portable can be as small as 200mb+? but only 8 maps... files modified? maybe yes, just like counter strike portable, you can't see your weapon but you can fire... the important is the 'real' gameplay is there...

but anyway, i'm talking about my favorite portable game --> counter strike :lol: :lol: :lol:... i don't know in the case of the game "Halo"...

Yap , portable means you can put it in an external hd and take it anywhere , play on any pc with the External HD plugged

Its very easy actually , just copy the required DLL files from your system 32 folder , and put it to the same place in other machine ,the game will play

It works for games a few years back , as for recent games , you might need to install Xlive or some online related program to make the game run.

BTW , portable doesnt works well with recent games , because there is a limit of data transmitted of external cable , so i wont recommend it

As for older titles , my external HD is full of them , and they are all portable :D

I can't get the dev mode to work. Is it even possible on this? Thanks ahead.
