How do I delete the preloaded media from the device?

1. Back up your device first.

2. If you've a media card, go into the options in the media app and change "reserved pictures memory" to OM. Even if you don't have a card, consider lowering the number to conserve memory.Savings = up to 10MB.

3. Delete the unnecessary language files. You can do it through options>advanced>applications, but the better, cleaner way to do it is through the Application Loader. When a new OS is installed on the pc (not the device) the .cod files are contained in the java folder at (for OS .69) program files/common files/research in motion/shared/loader files/8100-v4.2.0.69_P2.2.0.40.

a) There are approx 400 files, if you only want English, delete any file with the following at the end of the file name:

__pt __pt_BR __fr __it __de
__nl __en_GB __es __es_MX
__ca __tr

Also delete all files with dynamic_ling (except for the English files). For OS .69 there are a total of 186 language files totaling 12.4MB that can be deleted in this manner. Plus, delete the .cod files for Korean and semitic language support.

4.Delete the .cod files with any themes (net_rim_theme_..) you don't use. But do not delete the zen theme. By deleting the Cingular themeand the dimension icon theme I saved another MB.

5.Delete the preloaded video, by deleting the .cod file: net_rim_bb_medialoader_video.cod. Savings = 2.4MB.

6.Delete the preloaded pictures by deleting the files : net_rim_bb_media_240X260_b.cod and net_rim_bb_media_100_240X260.cod. Savings = 3.5MB.

7.Delete the preloaded ringtones by deleting the file: net_rim_bb_profiles_tunes_tunebundles_tunes8700.co d. Savings = 280k.

8.Once you're satisfied with the items that you've selected to remove. Open Desktop Manager and select Application loader. Follow the directions.

*Total Memory sabings is about 30MB. If you don't use PTT on Cingular, delete those .cod files as well (they say PTT in them). If you don't play BrickBreaker, delete it. If you don't use the maps application delete it.

How to encode video

Getting the right params to mencoder to produce top quality video is always a chore, but using method 1 in the original post is working wonderfullyfor me -- I've converted all sorts of stuffs (WMV/AVI/MPG/FLV/MOV) and so far only the FLV conversions have audio sync problems (nothing new). I'm even gonna say that the videos look better on my Pearl than any S60 device I've used.

Here's a helper script, save it as "vid2bb.sh" somewhere in your $PATH on Linux/OSX. Make it executable then run with a simple "vid2bb.sh <FILE>" command, the output will be in the input directory.

#!/bin/bash FILE=$1 ## 8100, 240X260 res ## uncomment one of the below depending on your input format #RES=240:135 #resolution, 16:9 ratio RES=240:180 # resolution, 4:3 ratio ## 8800, 320X240 res ## uncomment one of the below depending on your input format #RES=320:180 # resolution, 16:9 ratio #RES=240:180 # resolution, 4:3 ratio ## generic ABR=64 # audio bitrate VBR=230 # video bitrate mencoder "$FILE"\-o "${FILE%.*}_bb.avi" \ -of avi \ -ovc lavc \ -oac lavc \ -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:bitrate=$ABR \ -vf scale=$RES

Note that the above takes the input filename, chops pff the extension and adds a "_bb.avi" to the end of the output file to help you know which files are your BlackBerry ready ones. A quick sort, drag & drop and they're on your device.

How to use BCharge?

The 0.1 version currently available in 19/02/2007 will work with any BlackBerry older than the Pearl 8100; for the 8100, you'll need to get the latest version of the code from CVS; the product ID internally has changed from '0x0001' to '0x0006' in this newer handset.The latest CVS version will recognise both old and new devices, but the new CVS code includes some special action to take when "seeing" an 8100 device.

There are two parts to bcharge - the main binary itself and a "udev" script. You can use the tool without doing anything, just plug in your BlackBerry to any USB port and type /bcharge (substitute the path if needed). This will scan all your BlackBerry handset and adjust the current flow.Its that simple.

But to automate the process, you can copy a script from CVS official sites. First, copy the compiled binary (bcharge) to usr/sbin/ and ensure it's atleast mode 0755 (executable), owned by root (for security sake).Now copy one of the scripts from http://barry.cvs.sourceforge.net/barry/barry/udev/to the udev rules directory mentioned above. Clearly, if you're using Debian (maybe Ubuntu?) use the one called "Debian".

Note:If you've a new Pearl device, you'll need to update the ProductID in this script.

If you've a new Pearl device, you'll need to update the productID in this script.

Replace this code:

SYSFS{idProduct}=="0001"

With this code:

SYSFS{idProduct}=="0006"

It shoul make perfect sense why you're doing this. You could also just copy and paste the line to a new line and add both products at once -- the choice is yours.Maybe you've both an old and new BlackBerry device and need it both ways.

Reboot.'undev' rules don't seem to work quite right unless they're loaded at startup, so just save yourself some hassle and sacrifice your uptime with qa reboot. Now plug in your BlackBerry device and it should initially flash on the handset the error message about insufficient cahrge, but then the message will go away in a second when BCharge runs and performs the adjustments.

You can use theb 'Isusb' tool to verify the current has been changed - run 'Isusb'- v less' as section and it'll show the current USB port power flow. It should say 500mA and not 100mA.
