View Full Version : SmartCam - Turn your S60 device into a Windows XP/Vista wireless webcam

Talk about a trick piece of software! SmartCam is an open-source (from SourceForge) application for the Windows-set (Windows XP or Windows Vista) that basically turns your S60 phone's camera into a web-cam. All of you with an S60 device and a Windows machine can forgo that webcam purchase, it turns out you already have on in your pocket! It's too bad there isn't a Mac version of this software (yes, Macs get built-in iSight webcams, but it would still be cool to use our S60 phone as a webcam).

Getting your mobile phone setup as your webcam is as simple as installing the SmartCam application onto your Windows machine, and then installing the mobile client on your S60 device (don't forget to read the readme file).

But, there is one caveat. Your Windows machine (laptop or desktop) needs to have Bluetooth connectivity to link up with your S60 phone. We actually think that makes SmartCam all that much better - not only is your S60 phone a webcam, it's a wireless webcam.

Supports: S60v2, S60v3 and J2ME Capable phones.

Install jSmartCam.jar on your phone if you encounter problems with SmartCamS602ndEd.SIS or SmartCamS603rdEd.SIS

Setting up the J2ME application on the phone:

1. By default jSmartCam will ask for the user's permission the first time it uses the Bluetooth and before capturing every frame from the camera. To prevent this, just go to the application manager, select jSmartCam -> Settings (or Suite settings):
*Connectivity : Always allowed
*Multimedia : Ask first time

2. To speed up the connection, in the discovery screen, select the desired PC, then Options->Set default. The next time jSmartCam will connect, it will directly connect to the selected default device, without discovering other devices.

ENJOY :-)

One question please,
do we need to install SourceForge before installing this?
Thanks!

Works fine on my windows xp sp2 system it just takes about 15s to load before the smartcam eye logo is ready. Im using K-lite mega codec pack and quicktime alternative no other codec packs installed. Maybe your pc has to many video codec packs installed. SmartCam load all video codecs that are installed in your system. Just wait for the eye logo to come out then connect your phone.
