apcommobile Resident Evil The Collection 176x220 2006
resident evil :confidential report file1,2
desciption:
It comes as no surprise that there is a mobile version of Resident Evil. It also shouldn't come as a great surprise that the transition from console to mobile hasn't been a smooth one.
RE Confidential takes inspiration from the successful port of Doom RPG and tries to apply it to the Resident Evil formula. What you are presented with is a turn based isometric adventure filled with guns, zombies and an inherent curiosity to discover what happened. It could have been a great game but there is a lack in fluidity that Doom RPG managed to avoid.
The graphics aren't the greatest and the menu system isn't the most intuitive but you could forgive them that providing the gameplay was up to scratch. Capcom realised that they would need to create something special to bring the console version to the mobile. Using a turn based approach was their answer, everything else is pretty authentic to the original game and even has random typewriters to save your progress.
The main problem is that everything here is turn based. If you want to change weapons, reload or take first aid that's a turn wasted. Even simple movements to turn to face your enemy chalk up a move. It's not the case that the zombies will swarm on to you as you waste your turns, it's the cumbersome process of progressing through the game. The controls don't help the situation and I can see some mobile users getting frustrated. The game is played in isometric view but the control system is fixed. 2 will always move you forward and 8 will always move back. 4 and 6 turn you on the spot and 1 and 3 let you slide/strafe. Walking round a corner is at least a three point move. It's easy to get your left and rights mixed up when your point of reference is always changing and it does not bode well for a turn based game.
Each level is well laid out with plenty of zombies and rooms to discover. The plot slowly unravels itself and there are plenty of weapons to pick up along the way. There are two chapters where you can play the game as either Tyler Hamilton, who's inside the building trying to get out or Naomi McClain who is outside the building trying to get in. You do effectively have two games for the price of one.
If any brand was going to entice the console fanboys into mobile gaming, Resident Evil stands a good chance. Unfortunately, the 'Confidential' instalment does not do the mobile the full justice it deserves. All is not lost as Capcom have been working on a new Resident Evil title, 'The Missions'. We've had a tinker with the 3D version and this is a much better game and one that understands the capabilities of the mobile phone.
