My first post here.

As this is my recently experience. i'm Computer Techinician last time but since too long didnt assemble PC so there is a gap for me with the latest technology.

Recently i assemble a pc with all new thing but a old DVD writer. i guess it is a PATA that Vista didnt support. I have this DVD-ROM install the VISTA. After VISTA bootup. i can see the DVD-ROM at My Computer, but when i try to read a CD/DVD it will hang.

After all the method i have tried. I surrender and try to use a NEWER DVD-ROM. And everthing goes fine.

PATA is supported by vista. I think it was your scratched DVD or CD causing the problem. If the CD/DVD is clean, try to update your DVD writer's firmwire then lens cleaner.

I've also PATA DVD Writer, it is working fine.

I think PATA , UDMA, ATA are same.

PATA = IDE.

facts: you installed the Vista OS using that drive = drive IS ok.

then you inserted a DVD/CD and it will hang. are you sure your DVD/CD is ok? are these original DVD/CD media? and also take note that not all dvd/cd drives will read dvd/cd media burnt from other drives.

Myk!

boknoy is right. Try to insert the CD of the OS you installed. If it reads then your DVD-Rom working. If not, thats a different story. Not all DVD runs on other drive especially if it is DVD+R.
