View Full Version : Speed Camera Warning application with location based services
--{N_P}-- 14th May 2008, 10:01 This Python application provides a UK speed camera warning program for the Nokia N95 phone and other suitable Symbian Series 60 phones. It is designed to operate in the background (e.g. whilst using Nokia Maps or in standby) and popup to the foreground with an audio visual alert, then return to the background.
The application together with an installation and user guide is availalable as a free download
A suitable speed camera data file is required. A dummy file speedcam.txt is provided to illustrate the required format of the file. The good source of up to date files is available at Pocket GPS World (I have no affiliation with them) - an annual subscription is required to obtain the relevant file (pocketgps_uk_sc.csv) from: (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras)http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras (http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Cameras)
An old pocketgps_uk_sc.csv file that can be used to try out the application is available free in: (http://www.pocketgpspoi.com/downloads/pocketgps_uk_sc_oct05.zip)http://www.pocketgpspoi.com/downloads/pocketgps_uk_sc_oct05.zip (http://www.pocketgpspoi.com/downloads/pocketgps_uk_sc_oct05.zip)
This application has only been tested on an N95-1 running V21 firmware using both the internal GPS and an external BlueTooth GPS, but should work with other Series 60 phones that support Location Based Services.

subrata 14th May 2008, 10:16 Awesome share mate, working fine with N81. +rep for you.
aristotelhs2060 14th May 2008, 10:46 please upload the latest speedcam csv if u have it.
duxxyuk 14th May 2008, 11:58 Damn :~ "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to --{N_P}-- again."
Great share... More ammo against our police that prefer not to fight other more dangerous road crimes than speeding.
For those in France the program appears to take cvs files from http://www.alertegps.com/
Choose the Nuvi models to get a garmin.zip that contains several files (red lights, danger zones, fixed and mobile cams)
I'll get back with test results in a few days...
By the way it would be good if you put in some credit and a link to the author like his site at http://mcbiskits1.googlepages.com/
~{sbhatia}~ 14th May 2008, 12:47 NIce one Brilliant stuff Npope :sorry: have to spread some rep :thanks:
scoiattolo49 14th May 2008, 14:58 Please find attached an updated UK P**GPS file
UK Single file Speed Camera database

Just put it in the E:\SpeedCam\ folder, replacing the dummy one.

PS sorry N_P I must spread...

Yes you can use Garmin files.
BTW Garmin doesn't use directly .csv files but .GPI files: the .csv file is only used as a source to import the POI via Poiloader (it creates a .GPI file) ;)
You can certanly use files from other Countries but the problem is the description: The program uses the description to recognise the type of Camera and it conforms to the standard used by Po**etGPS in UK.
i.e.
GATSO@40
MOBILE@60
RedLight@30
(the @speed is instead a Garmin standard)
:)
simonpengelly 14th May 2008, 16:57 Excellent app, thanks for the share (the app and the speedcam file)
Cheers

ahmed 15th May 2008, 10:42 I've tried this wonderfull program with dutch camera's but it doesn't work. Can somebody look at the file and tell me what is wrong with it?

there is no camera type in it , FC and MC
scoiattolo49 15th May 2008, 13:41 If you want to create your own database for other Countries, you need first to find the appropriate file (Garmnin .csv) or convert it from TT format (use Poiedit).
Then you need to change the description to conform with the UK Pocketgps standard:
GATSO: Fixed camera locations
MOBILE: mobile cameras possible locations
REDLIGHT: Traffic light cameras
TEMP: Temporary camera installations, e.g. Road works.
SPECS: Section cameras. Average speed over the controlled section
Better to get separate files for each tipe and then replace whatever description with the description above (i.e. for a file containing fixed cameras, all descriptions will be the same: GATSO).
After you have all the files with the proper descriptions, you just consolidate them in one.
Please note that you need to retain (o convert) the info about speed limit in this (Garmin) format @XXX (i.e. @50 means the limit is 50). Any other way will be ignored.
duxxyuk 15th May 2008, 14:15 As I live in France I would be interested in the same application that works with Km/h as opposed to MPH.
Having taken a quick look at the installed python file with a view to modify it I discovered that the guy wrote his app such that the initial file (default.py) calls a .pyc which effectively obfuscates the file for me :-(
-=[Hunter]=- 15th May 2008, 14:19 great share as usual mate

mcvitie 18th May 2008, 00:52 Hi Ahmed
I'm the author. Delete the speedcam.ini file in the speedcam folder then v1.4 should work. I'll fix this for v1.5
v1.4 should work for both kph and mph files. v1.3 is only for mph. I've also changed the user interface so check the new guide.

kelvingo 22nd May 2008, 01:27 hi i m in s'pore install but always show location request
tigidong69 22nd May 2008, 06:43 do u have the thing for this software that will work in canada???thnx
duxxyuk 22nd May 2008, 13:15 Here is a speedcam.txt for France.
I've taken the liberty to combine the three types of camera that are present in France and classify them such that this software will work as expected.
There are fixed cameras like GATSO units (classed as GATSO@xx)
Mobile camera emplacements (classed as MOBILE@xx)
Red Light cameras (classed as redlight@xx)
You can simply append this file to any other in order to include France.
(as far as I am aware) There are no SPECS average speed cameras(cameras that take your photo at two points and calculate the average speed).
It is however, technically possible to measure the average speed on the motorways due to the toll gate pay systems they have.
Safe driving people ! :egdance:
matze 27th June 2008, 03:13 when I want to start the app I get no GPS source found message.. what does this mean??
