Hi abhra
As far as your laptop goes, it depends on how much you paying for it. However you need to know if your laptop will be 64 bit or not, as most linux distro's come in i386 and 64 bit these days. Obviously the more you can get for your money the better.
As for linux..I been using it for 6 years full time, and I started with redhat, and then tried various distro's, but have settled on opensuse for the last couple of years. Its easy to use, but you will have to update the movie players to allow you to watch avi etc, as opensuse cannot play them "out of the box" due to copyright issues.
The biggest advantage these days is that most of the bigger distro's release live cd's. This means you boot from the cd, and do not have to install linux to try it. You could try several like this. When you have decided which flavour you like, you could then download the dvd version of it, to install on your hard drive.
Probably the easiest out of the box solution for you to download is Sabayon Linux. Google for the homepage. I say this because it can play mp3, avi etc straight away. It comes in live cd and live dvd (which you also use to install it).
The two main desktops for Linux are KDE and Gnome. I prefer KDE, but like everything in Linux, its down to your choice. Welcome on your journey of discovery, i keep learning all the time. Any probs, drop a thread or pm me.

Ubuntu is my favourite distro. KUBUNTU is the alternate choice for a 'windows' user. Kubuntu use the KDE (desktop environtment) much like Windows XP GUI. Get KUBUNTU, U will never regret it.
Welcome to the world of GNU/LINUX!
Ubuntu Linux? Whyy??? - No VIRUS, Auto Updates, All hardware drivers are BUILT-IN, No BlueScreen, No Lags, UPnP, and got Eye Candy elements (Compiz)!

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04.
I have not tried any other distro but will give Fedora a shot one of these days.
One thing you may need to know is certain Linux OS' will run great on certain hardware! Check the forums for Compaq and I'm sure you will find an answer there regarding the best OS choice for you!
