Portugal deserved it.I can say nothing..We played horrible and made some ''unforgiven'' mistakes..

We couldn't share the ball and make pass-based attacks. Our coach made a big mistake by not giving Arda Turan playing time.If he have played we could have got into some ''real'' positions..

Congrats..But it's not the end..

Xardas, We won it @ ease. There is no if & but's in this game. If you consider those then think the three goals which are on post. Those will come more handy.!!

Atlast, It is a Game once gone/happened is all.

I think the tougher opponents for portugal are not in this group.. They'll get one in QF,SF . :p

The match to watch is TUR vs CZE.

Both are equally strong & fit. I think Turkey G.K & Forwards must be changed. Their defense is definitely strong but their GK & couple of Fwd need to be checked.

I think CZE will have a slightest edge on TURKEY coz of their victory/lose, Vice-versa.

Turkey man... their performance was painful to watch. I expected a lot more :( They got owned! Big Time! You got to admit Portugal is on top form. The first goal was a clasic! But Turkey still have a chance to go through! I mean Czech suck hard. Without Rosicky & Nedved their play looks really really bad. Was a very lucky win tho'! So still the way I see it is:
Portugal
Turkey

Scolari's men too strong for Turkey

http://img112.imageshack.us/img112/9082/europttkuv7.jpg

Losers on the opening day four years ago, Portugal made a sure-footed start to UEFA EURO 2008™ as second-half strikes from Pepe and substitute Raul Meireles secured all three points against Turkey at the Stade de Genčve.

Just deserts

It was a deserved victory for Luiz Felipe Scolari's men who also rattled the woodwork twice through Nuno Gomes. For Turkey, by contrast, defeat here continued their unhappy sequence of results against not just Portugal, who had previously bettered them at the 1996 and 2000 finals, but also teams coached by Scolari – his Brazil beat them twice at the 2002 FIFA World Cup – and made Wednesday's Group A meeting with Switzerland a virtual eliminator.

Upwardly mobile

Portugal entered the tournament seeking to continue their upwards trajectory in European finals: quarter-finals in 1996, semi-finals in 2000 and runners-up in 2004. And they made the early running here, with Bosingwa hitting the outside of the post with a low cross inside two minutes. After 42 goals this season for Manchester United FC, Cristiano Ronaldo, understandably, found himself crowded by white shirts in the initial stages but his threat was evident from the game's first corner, delivered by Simăo. Ronaldo appeared poised to strike only for Servet Çetin to produce a timely block. Portugal did get the ball in the net from another Simăo corner in the 17th minute but Pepe's header was ruled out for offside.

Survivors

At the other end, Nihat Kahveci saw a free-kick in a promising position trickle behind off the Portugal wall. Nihat was one of only two survivors from Turkey's 2002 World Cup team in the starting lineup alongside Emre Belözoğlu, and he and his fellow forwards – Kazım Kazım and Mevlüt Erdinç, both playing their first competitive internationals – had scant opportunities in a first period controlled by Portugal. With the half-hour approaching, Simăo curled a free-kick narrowly over and moments later there was a collective drawing of breath as Ronaldo cut inside to escape the shackles of Hakan Balta and proceeded to weave his way between three white shirts. If the finish was lacking, Ronaldo then drew a fine save from Volkan Demirel with a low free-kick driven in from the left. Although the ball bounced in front of Volkan, he managed to get a fingertip to it and touch it on to the far post.

Breakthrough

With Joăo Moutinho also going close, it was no surprise Turkey coach Fatih Terim sought to tighten up his midfield for the second half, sending on Sabri Şarıoğlu. Yet Turkey were soon on the back foot once more. Simăo dispossessed the dawdling Gökhan Zan and Nuno Gomes nipped in to fire the loose ball against the inside of the upright. After Gökhan, injured in that incident, limped off to be replaced by Emre Aşık, Portugal came again, Ronaldo shooting low at Volkan. The breakthrough finally came after 61 minutes. Pepe, carrying the ball forward with an assuredness not usually associated with centre-halves, played a one-two on the edge of the box with Nuno Gomes and burst through to finish past Volkan for his first international goal. Nuno Gomes nearly added a second soon after, only to see his header rebound off the crossbar. Turkey's hopes of snatching a late equaliser vanished with Tuncay's air shot before Meireles, also with a maiden Portugal goal, doubled the lead in added time, sliding the ball into an empty net after Moutinho's trickery had taken out Volkan.

CZECH REPUBLIC 1 - 3 PORTUGAL

Portugal claimed their second victory of UEFA EURO 2008™, overcoming the Czech Republic 3-1 in Geneva. It was another dominant performance by Luiz Felipe Scolari's team – as the figures proved.

Czech changes

While Scolari retained the same eleven players who had started the 2-0 victory against Turkey, his Czech counterpart Karel Brückner made two changes in personnel following the nervy 1-0 win over Switzerland, bringing Marek Matějovský in for David Jarolím in midfield and deploying Milan Baroš up front instead of Jan Koller. He made no alteration, however, to his 4-5-1 formation.

Portugal on target

Portugal seized control of the match early on, going 1-0 up with their first strike on goal. Deco was the scorer, seven minutes in, rounding off a slick one-touch move involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Nuno Gomes. The game did not really settle after the goal and from a corner by Jaroslav Plašil the Czechs equalised, also with their first effort on goal, as the lively Libor Sionko headed in an equaliser. The Czechs did most of their attacking in the first half down the right flank, with Zdeněk Grygera and Sionko seeking to take advantage of Portugal's problems in that area, where Ronaldo was little inclined to track back and Paulo Ferreira, a right-footed left-back, looked ill at ease.

Possession the key

The rest of the first half was marked by Portugal's domination of possession – 64 to 36 per cent in their favour – but they were unable to break through the Czechs' midfield line of four, commanded by anchorman Tomáš Galásek, whose 79 pass completion rate was one of the best in his team. The second half proceeded in a similar fashion to the first, namely Portugal with the ball and the initiative and the Czechs playing a waiting game. But where previously Portugal had been unable to penetrate the Czech wall, Deco, who had an excellent game, covering a lot of ground and making 73 passes, supplied a well-weighted square ball to Ronaldo, who drove past Petr Čech with his fifth shot on goal.

Long balls

At 2-1 down, Brückner brought on Koller. Scolari responded immediately by introducing aerial specialist Fernando Meira to counter the long balls he presumed would follow. Sure enough, the direct approach towards the towering 1. FC Nürnberg striker caused a few problems for the Portugal defence, with Sionko being denied his second headed goal of the game only by the reflexes of Ricardo. The match was concluded in Portugal's favour with a late breakaway goal by substitute Ricardo Quaresma, fed unselfishly by Carlsberg Man of the Match Ronaldo. It was the eleventh shot on target from the Portuguese, compared with just those two Sionko headers for the Czechs.
