Here we go with some happened facts :

How did they perform in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying?

• Portugal lost only one game in Group A, the only section with eight teams, but had to endure a nervous finale before claiming their place in the finals as runners-up to Poland.
• After clinging on for a 1-1 draw with Finland with ten men in their opening game, Portugal won 3-0 against Azerbaijan but then lost 2-1 in Poland.
• Progress was to be sporadic thereafter, despite winger Cristiano Ronaldo contributing eight goals. Portugal dropped some unexpected points, drawing 1-1 home and away against Serbia, 2-2 at home against Poland and – worst of all – 1-1 away against a surprisingly troublesome Armenia.
• Incidents following the 1-1 home draw with Serbia led coach Luiz Felipe Scolari to be banned from the touchline for three games, but Portugal won all three matches with his assistant Flávio Teixeira on the bench, meaning they needed only to avoid defeat in their final game against Finland in Porto to progress.
• With Finland knowing a win would likely see them qualify in Portugal's place, it was a tense affair, but a 0-0 draw sufficed for the home side, with Scolari saying: "I know we have to improve for the finals."

How did they perform in the 2006 FIFA World Cup?

• Advanced to their second successive FIFA World Cup finals by topping the standings in their qualifying round group ahead of Slovakia and Russia.
• Won nine and drew three of their 12 games in the qualifiers, winning all of their six games on home soil with 24 goals scored and two conceded.
• With 30 points from 12 outings, Portugal finished joint second with England (25 points from 10 matches) in terms of their average points per match ratio – 2.5 – with the Netherlands posting the best match average (2.67).
• Portugal enjoyed a successful campaign at the finals in Germany, finishing the tournament in fourth position.
• Group victories against Angola (1-0), Iran (2-0) and Mexico (2-1) were followed by the 1-0 second-round defeat of the Netherlands.
• Portugal made it to the semi-finals after a 3-1 penalty win against England but had their path halted by a 1-0 loss to France, before losing 3-1 in the third-place play-off to Germany.

How did they perform in UEFA EURO 2004™?

• Beaten finalists, having also hosted the event. Portugal lost their opening and closing matches to Greece but won all their other matches in between.
• Bounced back from their opening match loss to Greece to defeat Russia (2-0) and Spain (1-0) to top the group standings. Overcame England in the quarter-finals on penalties after the sides shared a 2-2 draw and then beat the Netherlands 2-1 to claim their place in the final.
• Greek striker Angelos Charisteas' 57th-minute goal separated the sides at the Estádio da Luz in the final as Portugal failed to follow the example of Spain (1964), Italy (1968) and France (1984) in winning the competition on home soil.

What is their best performance in the UEFA European Championship?

• Portugal's best performance to date in the competition came in 2004 when they lost in the final to Greece. Prior to that, Portugal had appeared in two semi-finals where they lost on both occasions to France.
• The two sides met in 1984 where France won 3-2 in an extra-time thriller at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille before defeating Spain in the final.
• Sixteen years later, on this occasion at Brussels' Roi Baudouin stadium, France prevailed 2-1 against Portugal, again after extra time, before defeating Italy in the final four days later.

Key facts

• Portugal have appeared in the last four UEFA European Championship finals having first qualified for the finals in 1984.

All-time record

• Up until the end of UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying, Portugal had played 108 matches in their 13 participations in the UEFA European Championship, winning 58, drawing 26 and losing 24 with 183 goals scored and 98 conceded.
• Portugal's record victories to date in the competition have come via two 8-0 defeats of Liechtenstein on 18 December 1994 and 9 June 1999. The latter match saw both João Pinto and Sá Pinto scoring hat-tricks.
• Their record defeats in the competition have come courtesy of 5-0 away defeats at the hands of Czechoslovakia (30 April 1975) and the Soviet Union (27 April 1983).

Some facts about the Coach:

Luiz Felipe Scolari led Portugal to the final on home soil four years ago

http://euro2008.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Photo/competitions/WorldCup/33/58/89/335889_w2.jpg

Credited by many as the man who rescued Brazilian football when the national team were at a low ebb, Luiz Felipe Scolari is hoping he can go one step better in his second UEFA European Championship campaign with Portugal.

Stage set

The stage seemed set for the Brazilian to lead the Portuguese to glory on home soil when they breezed into the final of UEFA EURO 2004™ but, just as they had done in the opening game of the finals, Greece spoiled the party by winning 1-0. Four years on, Portugal will return to the continental finals having finished second behind Poland in Group A. Although Scolari warned his squad would "have to improve" before June – words uttered after they qualified in low-key fashion with a goalless draw with Finland – their tournament record under 'Big Phil' augurs well.

Impressive performance

The UEFA EURO 2004™ runners-up performed impressively at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, seeing off the Netherlands and England in the knockout stages before losing 1-0 to France in the semi-finals. It was the country's best showing since 1966 and Scolari, who prior to the finals had been courted by England, agreed a new two-year deal shortly after. For all his standing in the game he was no great shakes as a player and it took a change to coaching in 1982 for him to make an impact at the highest level. Respected in Brazil, his reputation was established when he won the Copa Libertadores with Grêmio FBPA in 1995 and SE Palmeiras four years later.

Global triumph

Strangely, his aggressive style was not such a big hit with the Brazilian public after he took charge of the national team. Indeed, after barely squeezing through qualifying for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, his promise that Brazil would reach the semi-finals was greeted with derision. However, he was to prove true to his word and more as, despite leaving Romário out of his squad, a side featuring Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo overcame Germany in the final in Japan.

Scolari's wing wizards

Cristiano Ronaldo has been in sensational form this season
http://euro2008.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/Photo/competitions/EURO/66/44/16/664416_w2.jpg

Wingers may be a luxury many teams can ill afford but Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari will always find space for them. With Cristiano Ronaldo, Simão, Ricardo Quaresma and Nani to call on who can blame him?

Supply line

Much of Portugal's hopes rest on the young shoulders of Ronaldo, scorer of eight goals in qualifying and heir to Luís Figo who retired along with Pauleta after the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It is credit to Scolari that neither of them have been particularly missed and with those wingers providing a steady supply of chances the lone striker in the preferred 4-2-3-1 formation, be it Nuno Gomes, Hugo Almeida or Hélder Postiga, is almost guaranteed opportunities.

Depth

Portugal can switch to 4-3-3 or 5-4-1 depending on the situation, with another option the 3-4-3 formation Scolari favoured when his Brazil team won the 2002 FIFA World Cup. The latter certainly solves one problem as the left-back berth was an achilles heel throughout qualifying, with Marco Caneira, Jorge Ribeiro and the versatile Paulo Ferreira all failing to make the position their own. Luis Miguel and Bosingwa are far more settled on the opposite flank, while Ricardo Carvalho, Bruno Alves, Pepe and Fernando Meira will be competing for starting places at centre-back. Scolari may be grateful for the strength in depth as all are susceptible to injury.

Attacking doubts

In midfield, and with Maniche out of contention, young guns such as Miguel Veloso and Raul Meireles are putting pressure on old stager Petit for the holding midfield role. Deco's place in attacking midfield is more assured should he stay fit, though João Moutinho is waiting for a chance. The big question for Scolari, though, lies up front, with the more experienced Nuno Gomes facing competition from the powerful Hugo Almeida and the gifted Hélder Postiga.

'Unforgettable' welcome for Portugal

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3276/pteuroxp6.jpg

The president of the Portuguese Football Federation Gilberto Madaíl described his side's reception in Switzerland as "unforgettable" after thousands of fans came to greet the squad upon their arrival on Sunday.

Great reception
There are 174,000 Portuguese citizens in Switzerland, mostly in the French speaking part of the country, and they made their presence felt as Luiz Felipe Scolari's side touched down. Many supporters waited for hours to see the players when they landed at Geneva airport in the afternoon after a two-hour flight from Lisbon and many more lined the streets waving their red-and-green flags as the team coach wound its way to Portugal's training base in Neuchatel.

'Beyond expectations'
Some 600 Portuguese followed the team bus by motorcycle to Neuchatel, where an estimated 10,000 fans were waiting to greet the the players. "We were sure the reception from the expatriate community would be great but this welcome was beyond all our expectations," Madaíl said. "What we saw was unforgettable. Now we should focus on working because there are many things we have to do to prepare the first match against Turkey." Portugal kick off their Group A campaign against Turkey in Geneva on Saturday.

Portugal ready to justify billing

Having enjoyed a heroes' welcome when they arrived in Switzerland on Sunday, Portugal know the pressure is on to deliver when they tackle Turkey in their opening UEFA EURO 2008™ contest. "We haven't started EURO yet but it seems we're champions," said striker Hugo Almeida. "This support shows Portugal's strength so we have to give these people joy."
Nerves
Around 10,000 expatriates were on hand to greet Luiz Felipe Scolari and his star-studded squad at their training base in Neuchatel, and it is from there that they will journey south for their first Group A fixture on Saturday. "In the opening game it's natural that the players will be nervous, especially as Turkey are not easy opponents," added the Werder Bremen forward. "If we win we can approach our subsequent matches in a calmer and more relaxed way."

Impressive

The 24-year-old enjoyed an impressive season in the Bundesliga, registering eleven goals in 23 games, yet he expects to be providing back-up to the revitalised SL Benfica hitman Nuno Gomes as the 31-year-old prepares to lead the line in his third UEFA European Championship. "Nuno is a very experienced player who has given a lot to Portugal," said Hugo Almeida. "His know-how will be very important in these finals. My job is to do the best I can and take any opportunity when it arises."

Pepe unsure

Despite starting the final friendly against Georgia on Saturday, a 2-0 victory, central defender Pepe is another unsure of whether he will be in the first XI at the Stade de Genève. "We're a bit anxious, particularly me as it's my first finals, but we know what our responsibilities are," said the Real Madrid CF centre-back, who hopes to feature alongside Ricardo Carvalho. "Every player has to demonstrate his commitment and quality every day, there is still one place in the team for me, Fernando Meira or Bruno Alves."

Fans flock to Portugal training

http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1913/pteurosupportersat3.jpg

If the Portugal squad thought the rousing welcome they received on their arrival in Neuchatel could not be topped, they were forced to revise their opinions in their second training session in Switzerland.

Carnival atmosphere

An estimated 10,000 Portuguese supporters greeted the squad on Sunday night but more than 12,000 fans were present on Tuesday at Neuchâtel Xamax FC's Stade de la Malinière as coach Luiz Felipe Scolari put his men through their paces. There was a carnival atmosphere inside and around the stadium as Portuguese supporters from Switzerland, Germany and France gathered to catch a glimpse of their heroes.

Rousing reception

As Scolari's squad took to the field, they each generously returned the applause they received from the packed stands. Unsurprisingly, the biggest cheer was reserved for Cristiano Ronaldo, selected as one of the squad's five 'captains' by the coach in recognition of his growing influence. The public were treated to a full eleven-a-side practice match, with third-choice goalkeeper Rui Patrício the only player not to start, the watchful Scolari as referee, albeit one who stopped the game intermittently for tactical adjustments. It was serious too. When Ronaldo charged down Ricardo's clearance and drove the ball into the empty net, the Manchester United FC winger met the goalkeeper's protests for handball with a stern wag of his finger.

Trademark free-kick

Soon after the crowd saw what they were waiting for, with Ronaldo hovering in his trademark preparatory stance before striking a fierce free-kick past Ricardo. Even the arrival of some unseasonal rain failed to dampen spirits as Scolari shuffled his two sides in the second half, moving Ronaldo into a central position flanked by Nani and Simão on the wings. The coach may be continuing to formulate his first-choice lineup ahead of the Group A opener against Turkey but one thing he can be sure of is continuing support in their home from home. The local Portuguese community's passion will not let up, as one supporter explained: "The feeling you have for Portugal is even stronger when you're far away."

Ronaldo points way forward for Scolari

Luiz Felipe Scolari may be going into Portugal's UEFA EURO 2008™ campaign without many of the figureheads who served him so well four years ago, but in Cristiano Ronaldo, he insists he has a worthy talisman to take a new golden generation forward.

Faith

Speaking to euro2008.com, Portugal coach Scolari stated his belief in the Manchester United FC player's ability to carry his scintillating form into UEFA EURO 2008™, and to assume the responsibility of being a leader in the team. "He is a young player who has been on a spectacular journey so far in his life," said the Brazilian. "Today he is one of the main reference points for our team."

Inevitable
Scolari said that like former talisman Luís Figo, it was natural Ronaldo would develop leadership skills. "One day he could well be the sole captain of the Portuguese national team," Scolari said. "For now he is part of a group of five team captains, with some of the older players in the group. But he has the stature to do it. Whoever the captain was, whether it was Fernando Couto or whoever else, he [Ronaldo] has already assumed positions of responsibility. A team captain is formed naturally. Figo didn't need to wear the armband either. He imposed his presence with the quality he has."

Great future

Ronaldo's development, according to Scolari, is in tune with the changes in the Portugal side as a whole since UEFA EURO 2004™. Though many feared the end of the much-discussed golden generation would weaken Portugal, Scolari always had faith in the talent coming through. "We have great players with excellent qualities, who have great futures ahead of them," he said. "I don't know for sure if we will, but we will probably have players who can form another golden generation."

Repeat performance

The 59-year-old admitted the experience of the likes of Figo, Rui Costa and Pauleta would be missed, but he believes his current side's youthfulness could be an advantage as they look to improve on Portugal's run to the final four years ago. "What we have today is a group who still have great technical quality but less experience than the players of four years ago. [The younger players] are privileged from a physical perspective. If we have confidence in ourselves I'm sure we can reach another final in this competition."

Goalscoring options

Nor is the Portugal coach worried about goalscoring being a problem, despite the retirement of all-time top scorer Pauleta. "We have quality. In fact, we have probably four of the best ten wingers in the world," said Scolari who believes the likes of Simão, Nani and Ricardo Quaresma can be key in taking Portugal out of Group A and beyond. "We have the quality to go all the way to the final, and to win the final, because we have players in all sectors of the pitch who can score goals."
