Which is not to say that Pro Series Golf is perfect - far from it. Sometimes jerky animation, inexplicable pauses mid-swing, awkward shot changing and poor modelling of ball lies are blemishes which threaten to spoil the game. Luckily, there's one huge advance which outweighs all of the above - Pro Series Golf uses the N-Gage Arena to good effect, meaning that you can play against real people in real time even if they're on the other side of the world. Or, in Rafe's case, Sussex.

First impressions are great, as the game title screens look and sound very slick. Pro Series Golf works in portrait or either landscape mode, so it's easy to play the game in the way which suits you best. Interestingly, the number keypad is almost completely ignored, with the interface simplified to just the d-pad, plus '1' a couple of times per round, for the somewhat awkward procedure of changing your shot type (e.g. 'Chip' to 'Pitch'). The game's developer does admit that Mineshaft weren't able to put in all the things they wanted to - I'd have liked to see number keys mapped to applying ball spin, for example - something which isn't possible in this version of the game.




Game modes include '1' through to '4' player games, made up of mixtures of local humans and computer players, plus 'Career' and 'N-Gage Arena'. I played through several rounds on the opening course, trying to unlock the second course, to no avail - it turns out that you have to progress through stages of Career mode in order to unlock courses for general play. This is a bit of a hassle as the opening few challenges in Career mode involve multiple computer players and you have to have patience to sit through the animation of all their shots. A hotkey to bypass such animations would have been nice. Incidentally, the trial version gives you three full holes in 1-player mode - but this is fine for casual players and is in fact exactly the same slice of trial action that the famous EA's PGA Tour Golf used, back in the early 1990s - and which in turn inspired me to write the aforementioned Fairway - those parallels just keep on coming.

But all game modes pale besides going online to play against others. Once you've tried online multiplayer gaming, it's hard to go back to pitting your wits against a mere computer. Previous N-Gage games have scurried around online play but Pro Series Golf hits this full-on. It's true there's no overall online ranking for ability or ladder system, but it proved very easy to arrange to meet a friend (e.g. Rafe) in a particular course's 'lobby' and set up an immediate online game. Latency was very short, less than a second, so there was little time wasted while waiting for your next turn. I missed any facility to send messages to the other player(s) - maybe this was something else left out for time/resource reasons. Rafe and I resorted to chatting on Skype while playing instead, by the way! One tip - don't challenge Rafe to a game without doing lots of practice first - he's quite good!





Online play. N-Gage integration is pretty slick and setting up a game was a piece of cake

While waiting for a turn, a scrolling banner on the screen makes it clear that you don't need to do anything yet. And when your opponent strikes the ball, you see him or her in TV-style, taking the shot, followed (again) by a TV-style tracking shot or landing. And after each hole, you both see the scorecard, of course. There aren't any victory frills though - not even a 'You won' screen - another omission by the stretched developer?

It has to be said that the half dozen or so courses in Pro Series Golf are stunning. The scenery is almost exclusively static, but it's there, it's in full 3D and it's gorgeous - I particularly liked the texture/pattern on bodies of water, giving the impression of sunlight sparkling on the ripples. Each course is modelled accurately, as far as I could tell, and playing each hole has its own challenges. There's full contour modelling too, so hillocks and dips (and bunkers!) are all here in 3D-navigable glory.

The developers have done a stunning job in optimising their 3D code, with hole flybys and ball animations appearing surprisingly fluid and with only the occasional stutter and the rapidly warming device alerting you to the fact that the phone's processor is working flat out to generate your virtual golfing world. (In fact, playing an hour of Pro Series Golf is enough to get through half a full charge on an N95 8GB - but seeing as I've just explained why the battery is being hammered so much, I think this is acceptable.)

Before taking a shot, it's a good idea to examine the wind and ball-to-hole elevation. I'd say ball lie as well, but (apart from sometimes limiting which clubs you can use) this doesn't seem to affect shots at all. You then compare the distance to the hole with the maximum distance of the club you're using and work out roughly how hard to hit the ball (e.g. 95%). There's then the standard three-click method (as used in PGA Tour Golf, Fairway and tons of others) to determine the power of the shot and the timing. This latter is crucial because any errors cause slice or hook and result in the ball swinging to right or left (into rough, bunker or water, normally!).

Putting is also three clicks, but aiming is accomplished by lining up the ball roll preview line with the whole - this is where the ball will go if you hit it perfectly. In reality you'll mess up power or timing and so the ball's path will vary. After 10 hours of play, I'd rate the difficulty level of the whole golfing experience as about right. It's often hard enough just to make par and when you do get a birdie or even an eagle, it's a whoop-it-up moment.

Pro Series Golf - problems


In the face of the positives above, it seems churlish to dwell on a few more negatives, in addition to those already mentioned, but I need to be complete. As I said above, Career mode throws up some relatively tedious matches, which you have to win (I think) in order to unlock new courses. This takes a lot of skill and luck and in the meantime you're stuck with only one course to practice on, even though you've paid for the whole game.

Career mode also launches you into a 'Skins' game and there are no help screens in Pro Series Golf to turn to. With the complexities of computer golf, I'd have expected some kind of help or tutorial mode. Something else that the developers didn't have time to add. And add also outfits for the computer players, who all look alike. And play alike, sometimes hitting the ball to within a few inches of each other - there needs to be more randomness here.




Then there are the glitches, display oddities like a golfer's feet being chopped off by a hillock or 3D hidden-line-removal madness or a ball shown 6 feet under the surface of a lake. (As a programmer myself, I realise that these sort of things come with going down the whole virtual world route, and the glitches are relatively rare, thank goodness.) Less understandable are the occasional breakdowns of the ball perspective routines, causing the ball to appear over-sized and floating in the air over the grass...

One oddity which seems to have been planned in is that there's what I've been calling pin-capture, and it's only turned on when not putting. If you chip or pitch the ball in towards the flag and you get close enough (initial landing within a foot or so), pin capture leaps in and grabs the ball into the hole - a neat way of getting a few birdies and eagles on your card, even if it's not exactly realistic.

And when you do get said birdies or eagles, there are no crowd samples of cheering or clapping, something which should surely have been easy to slip into the development cycle. Pro Series Golf takes up over 50MB of space on your memory card - you'd have hoped that there were a few crowd audio clips in there. You do get some looped music over menus, plus club swing and water plop sounds - and even a little birdsong if you leave the game alone for a while, but that's about it.
Enough of the problems - is Pro Series Golf worth £8?


Undoubtedly yes. Despite the holes (hah, a pun!) that I've been shooting in the game's design and implementation, Pro Series Golf is better than the majority of computer golf games I've seen in handheld format over the last 10 years. Even playing standalone it's worth buying. Titles like Tiger Woods 08 on the Wii have spoiled us really, but then the Wii title is £40 and has had far greater resources put into its development.

As with any game, going online is where the fun really starts. You'll get a little jaded by playing computer players, but come up against a real, fallible, surprising human being and all of a sudden you're hooked. And excited. And challenged. I've a horrible feeling that AAS staff productivity is going to take a turn for the worse now that I can IM Rafe and say 'fancy a quick 9 holes at Pinehurst?' N-Gage Arena matches are easy to set up, can be password protected (useful for when the system gets popular in a few months time and there are possible gatecrashers to an arranged match) and you get to pick any of the built-in courses for '3', '9' or '18' holes. For the record, an 18 hole Arena match with Rafe took about an hour - 9 holes would be better for a quickie game with an online friend.

Factoring in this working multiplayer facility, it's even easier to forgive Pro Series Golf's failings. If you have even a slight taste for golf, you'll enjoy the online challenge - run, don't walk and buy the game now. And I'll see you in one of the lobbies!

Sure. Most of the time (approximately 2/3), career mode crashes out, and in single-player, it switches back to 3 holes when you select 18 and hit "Play" - again, not always but most of the time. My friend has the same problems (he has an N95 8GB). With some luck, we can play - so it is an improvement, but I think BiNPDA has still not cracked it completely.

yep i'm also facing this problem on the N73me (cracked). Tried sound on, sound off, landscape or default mode, still career mode only works when it wants to :confused:. I think this game is proving tricky for even the elite hackers to fully crack, or is it my fone??

Happens on my E51 also. I was thinkin' I would actually be able to play this game properly but I guess not. At least we have every other N-Gage game working though :p

That stinks to hear that so many people seem to have issues with the latest repack. I'm using an N95-1 with v21 firmware, and I had issues with the initial settings for career mode. After turning all the volumes off and using the flipped landscape mode, I have been able to play career mode with no problems. Thanks again for the game

I have been playing the game without crashes since my last post.
As long as i leave it in landscape mode it all seems fine.

As for career mode that is also working fine BUT is very anoying. Why do you have to watch the 3 computer players EVERY shot. Apart from anything else it kills the battery. Is there anychance of them releasing an update of it with a skip option do you think.

worked good And No Crashes

Its an improvement over the last release, however, the game still crashes for me. I get 'user error 44' or something similar to that when playing Career Mode. Happens randomly.

I got N95 8GB and the game crashes ONLY if I play career mode whithout first change orientension.
So all you have to do is spend a few seconds each time change orientansion before start career mode.
It works for me i checked this many times coz i play this game often:)
But i have to agree with gypo99 that is very annoying to wait for the oponents...

Finally first time it works fo rme now... N95 8GB F21

I put all volumes to middle setting, was already in landscape (media keys on left side) so flipped it (media keys on right side... rebooted... also closed call recorder on restart (just for the sake of it)... and career loaded first time (in career game i flipped it back again to media keys on left side)and played through 9 holes no problem. Quit and restarted and it loaded again just fine. How strange but its now working so far.

N95-1 keeps exiting with Kernel Exec errors as soon as you enter the course (after you select the player avatar).

I have noticed too that its only on the "career" mode that allows you to play more holes. If you select single player and no career, it will keep changing the options back to just 3 holes rather than 18 or 9 defaults and is "demo" from there. But either way, still crashes just before you enter a course.

From the reviews I have seen, this game originally is pretty buggy anyway with glitches and random pauses and skipping of animations along with some crashes even if you have purchased it legitimately..

Tried with my N95 but it still crashes when i get to the 3rd challenge in career mode (18 hole match play tournament). What I found is that if I play a 1-player game, then go back and and try career mode it works...

seems the game is sensitive :P

Ok problems ERROR KERN-EXEC and ERROR USER 44 was solved. Problems is with try official golf. I had same problems. I hard reset my phone, delete every data and reinstall every software, games. I install in first release official trial golf. With comming cracked version i delete official trial a install cracked game. I had this problems and problems i had with this repacked version. I reset phone delete and install straight repacked cracked version and Golf is perfectly function!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No problems. No change screen orientation, no change sound volume. Every is perfect!!!!!!! Problem is with first install trial official game. Problem solved for me:-) sorry for my english:-) I hope, that my advice will help you. :-)

worked for me! i think this error is occuring for people who installed the older cr*cked version, then replaced it with the new one when it came out. removing the trial.xml worked on my N95 8GB.

My answer for Golf is not uninstall trial golf. Data is saved in system data. My problem is solved hard reset phone,reinstall firmware and straight install cracked version Golf to clean system. I play carrer mode and dont have problem.

I can't do that, i've got so much stuff on my phone. It would take weeks just to find it all. never mind

Well was working on n958gb in career until reached 3rd challenge (first medal round) and now will not start... giving same old error again. Guess need to give up on this game for now. deleting trial.xml did nothing to resolve it.

Curious though when looking at the course xml files in E: that the trial.xml file opens and reads fine the way through as follows:

In the options menu of the game you can reset data, delete ghost games etc.

Make sure you have the binpda root certificate installed (from secman). Be sure caps are ON (if secman says "Capabilities activated", you are on the wrong mode). Also, sometimes it takes several tries before it works. Don't give up (I also used extracted .n-gage method from linux using WINE).

First it was not workin at all. I tried to change the volume and display orentation. But it didn't worked at all. But when I reset it to default it worked perfectly fine on my N73 me... I dont understand.... Anywayz thanks for the awesome game... N73 Me users should try it. It works....

to make PS Golf run in career mode I did like this and worked perfectly:
go to game setup -> options -> reset game options and confirm, than start a new career playing as computer male. after starting the game you can change the display orientation.

my friend using N81, and Pro Golf alwayas crash in secong challenge career mode, i help him to update his software from 10.0.0.35 to 11.0.0.45 one, and i see the game never crash more , i think latest frimware have a better KERNEL handling ( IMO) :LoL:

Not workin on n81. I get kern error 3. I tried everythin. Nothin works. It crashes while loadin the first coarse. I never had the previous version of golf installed.

i didn't install it till yestoday, work fine on my 6120, never crash~

i guess we need to delete the trial version, or the version we installed before this repack...
i suspect is the old saved data is causing this problem

First I uninstalled trial game and installed new crcked. I can run career when I set landscape ONLY in this position:

Then you can set orientation what you like.

I have nokia n95 -8gb FW v.20...

like on the other version, on my 5700, the game crush after 2 shots or wen enter on career mode. I tried all tricks with sound, landscape,but no result . . .

this got so bad for me that i deleted game , downloaded trial, yet when i try to purchase i get 'unknown error 20195' does this mean i also have to remove my ngage application and get the newest version from nokia? will the other cracked games work on the newest version of ngage??

edit; managed to buy game, it works perfectly, eats the battery though, and 8pounds was a bit steep, but the old saying goes- 'if you like it buy it!!'

can you connect your phone to PC by USB cable ?
if you do that, you can browse you phone's drive and edit courses.xml and delete trial.xml.

Course.xml edited, trial.xml deleted, phone restarted and still crashes. Looks like there is no solution to make this second release working.

In all games i can see all "targets" in My profile - game - Point pickups. What I got and what I need to get to raise my NGP. But in this game is only visible what I got... Its strange...

It did not work with my N82.
I played in 1 player mode, landscape orientation, put audio all in the middle.

After 3 times hitting the ball, the game quit and came out warning " ProSeriesGolf exited with an error.

I have installed this game exactly the same way like my other Ngage games, and other games work fine.

I have the same problem. After 2 times hitting the ball the game crashes. I hope that is coming soon a solution for this problem.

I got the crash ,same with u. . But when i uninstall symbian os pipes(i only ignore the message "symbian os pipes missing" when install n-gage app) and installing PSG,now it's working without delete trial.xml and edit course.xml. . .

after editing Courses.xml and deleting trail.xml it was not working then i change all sound options to middle and chnge orientation to portrait mode, and its working.. on n95 8gb

tested all possibilities and all advices, and nothing work.
When I changed landscape mode to portrait with half sounds the game was working (two courses)... BUT!!! Quited and started game again, chosen CONTINUE and game crashed...

It makes me mad...

Out of all the games so far, this is the only one that BiNPDA have had troubles with. You have to wonder why its so problematic. I'm surprised another team hasn't come up with a fixed release yet.

hmm I didn't install any of the fix apps for golf, today I updated my N95 to 30 FW and there was preinstalled BUILD 1318 and it works perfect the career mode everything

Build 1318 compatible with N95 8GB as system more updated than N95 even N95 using update version. But, my friend have some error when he play in Veridian course with 4 player. So, i fix his PSGolf at his N95 8GB as i do to my phone. Now he didn't get the error again. Even we play in Potrait or Landscape, no problem at all.

I have heard that this cracked game works only in some n-gage compatible device like n95,n81,and n93,but i never heard that people with other phone like n82,5700,6120 and other that can play this game without getting crashes!
So i think for phone that can't play this game,you must buy it or else don't play it!

I havent problem, any crash. I install official n-gage app, and patch, then i install golf and fixes. And its working on my N82:D

Mate coz u need to hack ur phone but no hacks have been arrived yet for new phones so wait until they arrive

got it sorted i reloaded game from ngage arena and it worked fine did not need activation code thank god that was the worry according to nokia this game is now fixed to work on all phones and its ok to download and reinstall on devices:dance:

This is a known problem caused by the latest build of the n-gage app. Nokia released and update to the game to fix this problem but we are still waiting for someone to crack it. :sorry:

it's working fine now on my 5700(mine is old firmware:LoL:)...i just reinstalled ngage app build 1296 plus the patch(do not install the ngage autostart and os pips) install the repacked version of the game then finally install the Mineshaft Pro Series Golf v1.39_Patch.sis by binpda...running smoothly now with no crash.:egdance:

first of all get n-gage v1296 by skanob intall on your mobile and then install patch file n-gage v1318.
now install pro golf repack.
change orientation to left.
then again change to right.
now go 1step back and then restore defaults.
and than game works perfectly.
