Please be more specific.

Do you have a router or hub?

Is your connection is needing a username / password to connect to internet?

yes, please be more specific...
remember n a broadband connection, the computers can't see each other if you're only using a router...if you use a switch/hub, both computer will see each other, but you still have to configure your router, so that both computers will have internet connection...

I strongly disagree with that.

I can make 2 pc to have internet & also able to see each other, share file & printer (networking). I can do it even without router or hub.

Yes, this can be possible by using Peer to Peer networking connection.

yes, i agree...you make cross-over connection to make both PC's see each other...
the other PC should have at least two NIC's (Modem+LAN)...when the internet was established, just do the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing)...

Hey Pal, can you plz help me with the setup of a network for my computers? I have a laptop and desktop, both runs Win XP. I want to be able to share my internet connection without having to unplug from one to the other as I do presently. My connection is a wireless broadband modem connected through a usb port. I also want to be able to access each computer from the other. Both systems have internal modem and LAN cards installed. What and what should I do and what will it take to get it working? Please any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.:ilove:

there's also some simple solutions with that networking. setup a simple LAN networking using local IPs 192....etc. and subnet mask 255.255.255.0, activate your file and print sharing. then install any proxy server from the host PC with internet connection and share it to other PC, by pointing your proxy port to your 2nd PC browser's LAN setting. both PC now have Inet connection.

Hi, many thanx for yr reply. I hv set up my LAN to use 192.168.0.1 IP on my internet host computer with subnet msk of 255.255.255.0. On the client computer, 192.168.0.2 with subnet msk 255.255.255.0. I used the microsoft network setup wizard to configure the LAN. I hv full network connection except for internet connection on the client pc which is not working. My problem now is how to get the internet connection to work on the client, I have already enabled ICS on the host computer. Plz, how do I set up the proxy U talked about above? Or is there something that I didnt do right? Pls help. Thanks as always!

Chek the gateway address of the host computer. Open lan the go to status. Or on run type cmd then type ipconfig /all.

Either which you choose, you will see the gateway then type it to the client pc.

Im on mobile now cant give you the exact detail but my instruction will help you a lot.

Thanks, man. Just that I dont really know what's wrong with the setup. There is nothing on the gateway. The default gateway is empty. No Ip. Worst still, my connection speed has dropped by more than 50% since I did the network setup. But the network works very well except for the internet connection. Plz, if you still have any ideas, I will be very grateful.

P.S. when I try to run the ipconfig /all, I get error message as below:

"Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\User>ipconfig /all

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: The operation completed successfully.

1st attempt

If you have to dial to connect to internet, do this first on your host pc then check your internet on client pc after doing this.

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

2nd attempt

If you see the DNS Server or Default Gateway, input it on your client pc. If you cant see what is the DNS on you host pc try 192.168.0.1 on client pc.

Hopefully any of these will work for your. Good luck.

Thanks somuch. Trying the settings now. Though I can't seem to get the ping to work. always coming up with error.

Any ideas on how to manually clear the 'ARP Cache'?

Edit: Ok. I've managed to get the ping to work now. See the attached photo. I have also used the settings as suggested by you, but the internet connection still does not work. Take a look at the screen shots of what I'v done:

ping ipaddress to check connection. -t means continuously.

ping 192.168.0.1 -t

to check internet connection and if says "reply from . . . . . . " you have internet connection

ping google.com -t

Pls friends, I still need some help to get my internet connection sharing working on my network of two computert - a laptop running WinXP SP2 and desktop also running WinXP SP2. The screen shots above is from the client pc, similar to what I have on the host. Thanks as always for your assistance.

You are missing something.

How can you say that the network already ok? For example your host PC is 192.168.0.1 and client PC is 192.168.0.2 From host PC try to ping 192.168.0.2 and from client PC ping 192.168.0.1 if you see "reply from . . . ." but if not you have a problem at all. Networking not yet set.

How do you connect both pc? Directly LAN to LAN (PC to PC) or LAN to network hub???

If LAN to LAN your LAN cable must be cross-cable like this

But if your LAN to HUB, it just a straight thru cable.

SO CHECK YOUR CABLE FIRST

When I ping the client from the host, I get "request timed out". The same when I ping from the client to the host. Why I say network ok, is bc I am able to access both Pcs from each other. I hav attached a sketch of how my network cable is wired. I use direct LAN to LAN, no hubs, connection. From the sketch you posted above of CAT5 X- Over pinouts, it is like my cable is wrongly wired. Pls just have a look and advise. Thanks once again.

try to include turning off the Windows XP firewall, this thing messing up in networking.

Then its confirm. You have wrong cable. You must follow my diagram.

If your firewall is the default windows, you dont have to turn it off.

Solve the cable first.

Thanks guys. Let me look for the appropriate cable first. My firewall is off for the LAN connection. Will inform you appropriately.

the proxy he discussed to you could be find at:
(Internet Explorer)
Open Internet
Click Tools>Internet Options
Click Connections tab>LAN Settings
Check the Proxy Server checkbox, then type the IP address of the host PC, and type in port 80 or 8080
Click OK

(Mozilla Firefox)
Click Tools>Options
Click Advanced tab>Network
Under Connection, click Settings
Click Manual Proxy, then type the IP address of the host PC, and type in port 80 or 8080
Check Use this proxy server for all proptocols
Click OK

may i interrupt here ?

although its possible to have both internet and pc to pc connection at the same time ,
its also un-safe ; your shared files become visible on internet

better to use two seperate connections
one for internet and one for pc to pc

network-cards are not expensive , some motherboards allready have two

Although direct PC-PC internet sharing is possible, it is still much better to use router so that your internet is stand-alone.

Setting-up internet sharing thru router is much easier that PC-PC. Sometimes you just need to plug it ;)
