Hi everyone

My dad gave me his old lapy, is a mecer N243S8 but its overheating. So I opened the processor cover and removed the heat sink, the CPU was dry, no thermal paste, I applied the thermal paste but it continued to overheat. One other thing I noticed is that the fan turns, then stops and starts again in a few seconds, but even if the fan is turning, the heat sink gets hot in a matter of seconds. My question lies here, the CPU on it is a 2.4ghz CPU but when I google the model I get a 1.7ghz model, so is it possible that they could have tried to upgrade the CPU with a bigger one so the cooling system cant handle the heat produced by the 2.4ghz CPU and again if so what do I need to do?

It might be overclocked thats why the processor speed is greater than the specs you have seen.

Enter CMOS setup the reset or load defaults settings to clear previous configurations on it.

It is normal that the fan turns, stop then turn again.

Thanx for ur reply, I get ur point but is it possible that a CPU can heat up a heat sink within just a few seconds, is it possible for a CPU to work but over heat?

I will restore to defaults and see what happens.

my gues is they overclocked;
reset bios

that the fan stops is not normal
when cpu warms up it should spin faster;
download speedfan [or similair prog]
you get adjust fan speeds with it
but it also tells u what cpu you have

http://www.almico.com/sfscreenshots.php

if that doesnt work;
than you know why he gave it away

Thanx for your link, but I wont be able to install as it shuts down after logging in. anyway I did reset to defaults in the bios so I guess its not overclocked.

So still its 2.4ghz processor? Check on My computer properties.

The 2.4Ghz is written on top of the processor itself, but I dont think I'l be able to make it till the system properties. Tell me something, do you think getting another CPU complete with cooling system will solve this problem?

So it is not overclocked. I suggest that you bring it to a PC shop for thorough testing (burn test) so that they will figure out the real problem.

so 1.7 is default and someone installed 2.4?

this could be the course
you see; every thing in your pc follows FSB [ read processor ]
so now your chipset and oher hardware run about 1.5 times faster than default
in bios downclock cpu to 1.7 and see what happens

[ default bios usely means auto so now it runs at 2.4 , not overclocked but could be to much for the rest ]

about buying a new one;
you have to know socket-type

But will it solve it, how can I make sure before buying, I dont want to find myself stuck with a CPU I dont use.
Thanx for all your replies

Dont buy yet unless it is fully tested.

As what Ive said, bring it to shop then they will test it part by part.
