View Full Version : Differences between Navcore 8.3 and 8.204
kikkia 18th November 2008, 15:28 Hi,
I got both Navcores working on my go 910, what are the differences between them ? only the x40 menu style and specch control ??
IQ2 is working in both Navcores, i can't locate differences
by the way, what is different between the TTS voices, my old (german - Katrin) one is about 300 mb the new one i use is about 50 mb, where can i get the big one, i think the speech quality is better.
Thanks
meow1 18th November 2008, 15:52 well i'm not sure about 8.3 but 8.2 will resize reality view images for tomtom one units i.e. smaller screens/non widescreen. not sure if 8.3 has this capability or not. i do know that 8.3 can show IQv2 but not sure about 8.2

scorpio50 18th November 2008, 17:01 i prefer the 8.204 menu style and the fact it has an icon on navigate page and front screen for voice input love that feature but i think this is purley for 940 models had it on my 520 woks perfect apart from cant play MP3 through the FM

the maverick 20th November 2008, 17:13 Well what are the differences?
1. Appearance of the two navcores do look different with options showing in 8.204 that do not appear in 8.300
2. Certain options appearing in 8.204 are unavailable if requiring GPRS, not so in 8.300
3. 8.204 looks mighty pretty, 8.300 is fully functional
4. Both work fine for getting from A to B
5. If you wish to avoid traffic jams (as most would) so you would have subscribed to TTTraffic, then you NEED 8.300 if using GPRS, if using RDS/TMC whichever you prefer.
6. If you have more money than sense, you would not be here and you would be using an x40 and subscribing to Live.
claytonc 21st November 2008, 07:26 so, voice commands (speach recognition) should work in 8.204? When I click the little microphone it doesn't do anything except dim the mic and the level meter... Same when trying to navigate to spoken voice... Just stays at "One moment please..." :(
Using NC 8.204, NA v815.2019 maps with 5.5106 bootloader on a GO 920.

-Have a look in the ASR folder in the root of your device whether you have "support_asr" file. If you do not then take it from the attachment.
-Check your "cspeech" files in your map folder as well. Their size should not be 0kB(that would mean they are "dummies" only)I do not have the ones for North America v8.15 but I am sure you will find them on the forum for your map version. :ilove:

You can test that NC 8.300 + Western_and_Central_Europe 8.15
vs NC 8.204 + Western_and_Central_Europe 8.15
calculates the streets differently, in many situations.
For example, using the same Western_and_Central_Europe 8.15.2003 with 8.300 Navcore and 8.204 Navcore version, you can try:
Rome (Italy)
From "Viale Giulio Agricola" to ---> "Circo massimo Stazione"
and (it is important to verify also inverse)
from "Circo massimo Stazione" to---> "Viale Giulio Agricola"
Only NC 8.204 calculate DIRECTLY and CORRECTLY both directions.
NC 8.204, in fact, reads more details with a bigger ZOOM (pulling it three times) and it recognizes the two-way.
You can verify into a GoogleMaps route simulation, using MAX of Zoom. (You know that the Google Maps are TeleAtlas maps...)
NC 8.300, instead, in opposite direction, reads only one-way into the map, because 8.300 uses a minor size of Zoom. (two or three - (minus signs) from max of Zoom). Consequently, 8.300 calculates with a minor detail and the route can be wrong.
You can see that, with only one X of Zoom, Google Map indicates ONLY one-way over the "Furio Camillo" Metro icon.
So, since NC 8.300 does not read sufficiently the map details, it creates a wrong way back, in opposite direction!!!!
You can try more examples, comparing your TomTom suggestions (8.300 and 8.204) vs the Google Map suggetions.
Final impression:
The Navcore 8.204 is much more accurate because it reads the maps at max X Zoom;
Navcore 8.300, instead, read map (approximatively) at three signs minus from max Zoom.

Thanks for your help but neither suggestion has solved the problem. I already have support_asr.dat file and all the cspeech files are there as well and are not 0 bite...
I've tried downloading other ASR bundles and replacing my existing ones but nothing has made a difference...
I'm using MrChris's maps that I got from HERE (http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=305644&highlight=8.15+map)
Can you think of anything else I might try?
EDIT: I downloaded another 8.15 NA map set and tried the cspeech files from it. Still not working... Just sits at "One moment please... prepairing speech recognition"

Also, looking at the link uran235 posted for the changes it looks like Support for IQ Routes 24/7 data was introduced in version 8.3. I'm using 8.204 and it seems to be working. At least as far as I can tell. (it shows IQ route as of 'current date & time' )

What tomtom unit have you got?
capao33 24th November 2008, 22:55 @shaz29
verify you have got the good ASR package for you navcore (asr =automatic speech recognition)
for navcore v 8.204 asr files are dated 21 of october 2008
and all yours cspeech files in the map's directory (no dummies files)
Verify also the presence of the file named support_asr.dat (txt file with a value of 1 inside) in the \asr directory (else create it with notepad)
claytonc 24th November 2008, 23:08 What tomtom unit have you got?
I've got the tomtom 920
shaz29 25th November 2008, 11:38 just like capao33 said... u need an asr folder in the root and in that folder you need a support_asr.dat file... if you dont have it then you can create it easily, just create a new notepad file and put a 1 in it, then save it as a .dat file instead of a .txt file
claytonc 25th November 2008, 16:57 I've got my problem worked out (the big one anyway lol). I redownloaded all of TTUsers files FROM HERE (http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=300929)and redid the install. I didn't have outsource.8204 for one. I also downloaded the 940.cab file and extracted the ASR folder from it. Also overwrote all root files with the 940.cab files. Then used TTUsers ttsystem file in root. Almost all is working now... Except, my BT remote will not work.
I like it though. After planning a route now it says how far and how much time it will take to get to your destination. I LOVE being able to talk to it although reaching up to press the microphone button is a pain. I hope the remote will have this function once it’s working.
OK, now I have a question (NOOB ALERT!)
Exactly how do I go about adding a noclean switch? In TTUsers first post he says if anything doesn't work to use the noclean switch. How exactly do I use all these switches?
I have a backup so if there is a specific file(s) that are for the BT functions then I will have those available.
hacmac11 27th November 2008, 14:53 One difference between 8.3 and 8.204 is, that the light sensor dos not work un der 8.204.
Or are there any news to this topic?

ianc60 27th November 2008, 19:32 I already answered, "voice navigation is available" !!
why don't you just type the three letters "x30" in your model.txt and look for yourself instead of wasting everybodies time with questions that can easily be answered on your own.

Voice navigation can be interpreted for address input.
Of course I can try by myself but I have to switch from navcore 8.204 to 8.300 and I want to do this only for a good reason.
There are tons of stupid posts here, but your answer can be useful to many people.

EDITED fixed it. i loade the HOME software and noticed the Susan language was not installed on device so i simple downloaded from tomtom and NA_susan is talking again. yeaaaaa.....

The post you are referring to is about navcore 8.203/4 not 8.300.
I removed model.txt and tried some hours, finally I switched back to 8.204.
I think the voice command input feature ("increase volume", "go home"...) is not available on navcore 8.300, indeed v8.300 is not for tomtom x40...
If someone manage to activate it on 8.300 please post how to do.

The confusion is that 8.300 is a new navcore for the x30 devices, whereas the 8.20x navcores are for the x40 devices (i.e. it's a newer than 8.300).
There are some new icons and a voice-command feature in 8.203/204, but other than that, I can't see much difference in the functionality of either of them
ChillyCat 11th December 2008, 04:03 I can't see much difference in the functionality of either of them
Me neither.
It DOES NOT get you from point A to point B any quicker.
Isn't that the purpose of a GPS device ?
But, the Kids gotta have their "eye candy" [don't even ask why] and the
8.203/204 gives them just that. Personally, I make it a practice NOT to stare at an Icon......it's kinda creepy.
And the voice command ?? Don't even get me started on that.... I know better.
