Hi all...

I need help with my desktop. When I log into the system everything just stays at the desktop with no icons. No My computer, My Documents, not even Recycle Bin. I can only access to things via Task Manager. This happened after I got an adware but it was supposed to be quarantined by Threatfire.

Need it to resume back to normal. Thanks in advance.

Windows XP sp2

Under task windows task manager(Ctrl+Alt+Del) I run my programs via new tasks...that's how i managed to open my internet...

basically i was transferring some psp games from computer to my portable hard disk...then there was a power cut. So I continued the next day and this is what happened.

in that case i'd blame the power-cut first instead of adware
this can damage yer software [ windows is software too ]
or ever your motherboard

if this would happen to me i would re-install
with windows running insert xp-disk
if it wont "autorun" go to setup as your doing now

dont format
select upgrade instead off new install

The thing is everytime when I try to open a folder, like say Accessories under Start Menu it shows me the Open With options. And the only option that I know is Opera. Apparently it only shows me Internet Explorer(without add ons) so there's no way I can try with that option...

btw, explorer.exe is not found under the process tab. Hope it's valuable info for those helping me out...

If there was a power cut it's possible it's just a simple disk error. Did you try running a Disk Check? And yeah, what BasFLT said can be another solution using the repair function of the XP disk.

What I would do in your case is download and install SP3 since that will also fix your issue and saves you from having to reinstall anything.

Good luck

Hm. I tried System Restore, but there was no restore point to it. Tried putting in the Recovery CD and load via Task Manager, I tried repairing it and apparently it gets stuck at somewhere transferring at 40%.

I got fed up I just ctrl+Alt+Del and chose the destructive recovery. In the end, the monitor showed me reformatting partition(or smth like that) for like a few hours. Literally like not responding, or rather not doing anything. Went shopping, went for dinner, slept through the night. <b>Nothing.</b>

Decided to retry everything when I restart. In the end, it showed me that this file, <Windows Root>/System32/hal.dll is corrupted or missing. Please reinstall a new copy.

The worst is not yet over. Somewhat somehow, the disc is actually in the CD-ROM. BUT yet, when I try to boot via CD-ROM, it showed me that the recovery CD does not support this HP model.

System Restore, Recovery, Repair all did not work. I decided to give up. If anyone has any solution for me, Please let me know. Thank you all who have given me solutions up till now.

in post #4 i said not to format

factory-pc's store their recovery-system on a hidden partition
witch is now gone
and therefore the original boot-cd became useless

buy or download a normal windows-version an start from scratch

It doesn't matter now because now the cpu doesn't even power up. I'll just bring the whole cpu to the computer shop and get it over and done with.

Any mods who see this can close this thread already. Thanks alot for those who contributed to helping out...
