Garmin Mobile XT on Nokia touch screen devices (5800)

[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Garmin Mobile is compatible with the operating system Symbian S60 V5 in general.
In the early stages of testing it was noted that programs like Garmin and Route66 are installed without problems, but they did not receive the commands because of the lack of a physical keyboard. This problem was solved, however, using software that will create a virtual keyboard on the display, the Garmin is able to recognize almost seamlessly.
In essence, from today you can use Garmin Mobile XT also on Nokia devices touchscreen. To get the Garmin, you must follow this simple guide, which I have not tested coz i'm not currently in possession of a terminal Touch, but I know that has been tested by many other users.

GUIDE FOR USE GARMIN MOBILE XT ON NOKIA Touch
With this method, the navigator works perfectly, but the only limit is the inability to enter the house number of an address. Perhaps this little bug will be fixed in the meantime you can navigate to our goal.

1) Install the Garmin Mobile XT.

2) Install VirtualKey on the phone's memory (important!) And Sign it, you can download free from here:
virtualkey ([Only registered and activated users can see links] are.by.Luomao2000.rar)

The start it and at once we close it to let him to create the directory that we shall need later.
3) Download custom2.keymap attached
Connecting your phone to the PC and enter in:
E: \ private \ e7d61da9 \ (where E is the memory card)
And copy custom2.keymap

4) Unplug the phone from the PC, start Virtual Key, go to Options / Load Mode / Custom Mode 2, Exclude, Option / Change Mode / Includes. Then Options / Add from installed, choose Gmobile xt, Select, Cancel, Back (to let Virtual Key to remain in the background).

that means:
== Settings tab Options-> Load mode-> Custom Mode 2
Exclude Tab == Option-> Change mode-> Include
Includes == Tab Options-> Add-installed from> Gmobile XT-> Select

It 's all. The procedure is finished, we will be able to use the Garmin on Nokia TouchScreen and other devices with Symbian S60 V5 touchscreen.

If we begin with questions like "how to sign" here , then the thread becomes useless. Please guys try to address those somewhere else. You need to get a certificate from the Request Your Certificate Here thread and that's it. Let the man describe the method in more detail, like version of garmin used , how to customize the keymap and so on. And please those who tried dont just say thank you, but let us know that it also worked or not.:)

some key work ok, not all, still need BT keyboard to go back from some menu's

All we need now is somebody to solve the issue of going back and foreword in the menu's without using BT keyboard, then it works good. Traffic updates work, weather forecast, google search, spoken info in dutch etc. :goodluck:

mine managed to work without the BT keyboard... :) just use the VirtualKey as TS told us..and you can just use your call button as the left softkey menu and hang up button as the right softkey menu...and camera button to go down on some menu in garmin.. :)

i finally figured it out. to find that folder marked private' you have to only access the folders on your phone through using the phone in mass storage,

Now everything worked as far as installing and copy/pasts and doing the settings inside of virtualkey but when it comes to using garmin nothing worked, any word/button at the bottom of the screen will not work, there is no way to press back or menu please advise,

I think i'll go back to old faitfull nokia su-8w bluetooth keyboard. The big problem do we all know is the map roads mess up when putting it in landscape mode and garmin looks a bit silly in portrait mode because the phone isnt wide enough.

see i want to be able to use garmin in wide screen mode through my phone wired into my sunviser screen, simply just because i can i already have a garmin nuvi

Actually you don't need to turn your bluetooth on because 5800 has built in GPS receiver.. but some cases it would not detect the internal GPS due to Garmin XT is not registered..It will work fine if you had your garmin xt application registered...thanks..

My Tips

Firstly there is a few problems one being when you have it in 3D view the road lines break up in landscape mode so its not usable. and 2ndly it's not possible to scroll when using virtualkey so i suggest the following.

1, Put the view in track up mode.
2, use your own or borrow a bluetooth keyboard just needed one time to scroll and set it up in setting to turn the "turn preview" on. By the way you need to install the keyboard app before pairing and i suggest nokia's su-8w keyboard.

Thats it. I suggest getting a phone mount on ebay and put the phone in landscape mode. I myself got a sunvaser screen and wired the supplied tv cable into the stereo and screen so after doing some tests this morning and setting up up nicely i now have Garnin mobile XT from my phone coming out nice and big in the sunviser screen. then if i want to i can sit the keyboard on my lap and there you go, a built in home computer to watch movies, view/edit photos and nav with garmin. All powered by the nokia 5800

P.s thank you so much for virtualkey, its perfect once the keys are mapped

In my 5800 XM scrolling and changing those settings you described are possible with touch screen and three buttons.

I have admit that my "works great" in my previous post was too early. I was testing that and like someone said it isn't really real time location. Though I've stopped walking, routing shows that I'm still moving. I have also navigator for the car and that is really accurate.
Is there any fix for that or is it just bad software and weak hardware...

I would suggest that we all wait for the new version from Garmin which will officially be compatible with S60V5 touchscreens, any other attempt to make the older versions able to be executable is just a waist of time imho.Patience and I think we wont be waiting for long, there is some inside chat(in the net) for this new version to be soon available(maybe even February +).

This is offtopic but I just read an online manual of 5800XM and in it is written that the device has built in geotagging.

You can read the actual proof over here
[Only registered and activated users can see links]

Just search for 'Camera' and expand it to read 'Location information'

Following is what it says for those lazy like me.

Location information
You can automatically add capture location information to
the file details of the captured material.
Select Menu > Applications > Camera.
To add location information to all captured material, select
Options > Settings > Show GPS info > On.
Location information indicators:
● — Location information unavailable. GPS stays on in
the background for several minutes. If a satellite
connection is found and the indicator changes to within
that time, all the images captured and video clips recorded
during that time are tagged based on the received GPS
positioning information.
● — Location information is available. Location
information is added to the file details.

:goodluck: Here's to hoping Nokia will add this functionality natively in a future firmware.

You need to start garmin once, press "connect to garmin gps" or something like that.. It doesn't find any garmin gps device (of course, if you don't have a one). Skip that or press cancel or something like that.

The it throws you to the garmin menu screen. It says "Where to?" and "Show map" with big icons. There's also 3 smaller icons: 1 with sun and cloud, 1 with wrench and 1 with X marked on it. Press the one that looks like a wrench.

The go to settings and find info or something like that (i don't remember what it was in english, because i changed mine to own language.)
Anyway the info icon is same as the garmin icon in your phone menu.

There reads IMEI: ##########, IMSI: ########## and UNIT ID: ########## or something like that, write that unit id down somewhere.

Then you need to open garmin keygen, put that unit id there, select garmin mobile xt and press generate.

Open up a notepad, copy&paste that code what you got from keygen to the notepad. Press file/save as. Then you write SW.UNL to the file name field and select All Files for save as type.

At the same time you can generate key for map with the same tool. Open new notepad and paste that mapcode you got from garmin keygen. Save as type all files (again) and filename GMAPPSUP.UNL IF THE MAP IS NAMED GMAPPSUP

Step by step for Nokia 5800:

- Get the 5.0.20 Standalone + Keygen
- Download VirtualKey and get it signed
- Download the custom2.keymap

Installing Garmin:

- Plug in ur Phone. Extract the files in the copytommc-folder to the root of your Micro-SD-Card
- Either use the Nokia PC-Suite to install garmin (on the card) via the .sis-File or copy it over to the sd card and use the programmanager. Do not start the Program yet!

Setting up VirtualKey:

- Install ur signed virtualkey (another .sis) on the micro-sd-card.
- Start VirtualKey.
- Close VirtualKey.
- Copy the custom2.keymap in the Card:\private\e7d61da9 folder.
- Start VirtualKey. Load the custom2-profile.
Then scroll to the right and change the mode to Include. Go to Options/Add/Add from installed and choose Garmin.
Get back to Settings(left), then go to options/save as/custom2.
Then choose "run in background" and u`re done.

Getting Garmin to use ur internal GPS + getting Maps:

- Start up Garmin and navigate (green is yes, red is no, camera = down, +touch) to "info" and write down ur card-id.
- Use the keygen to create an id which u write down in a textfile u name "SW.UNL" (it needs to be a real .unl file, NOT only per name)and copy over to the "Garmin"- Folder on the Phone-Card. Do not close the Keygen yet.
- Copy your maps (.img) to the garmin folder.
- Create an id for the map u want with the keygen. Copy the id to a file u name nameofthemapfile.UNL and copy it over to the "Garmin" folder on ur Phone.

The next time u start Garmin u can chose the internal GPS and have ur maps ready. Dont forget that u need virtualkey running in the background.

And u might wanna rename CardRunner.dll in the Card:\sys\bin folder to CardRunner.bak or CardRunner.old as it kills off a service which really drains a lot of accu-power.
But that only stops the service from autostarting together with the phone.
It is active as soon as u start garmin and stays active! So u better restart ur Phone every time u`re done navigating.

virtual key (to be signed):

Step by step for Nokia 5800:

Setting up VirtualKey:

- Install ur signed virtualkey (another .sis) on the micro-sd-card.
- Start VirtualKey.
- Close VirtualKey.
- Copy the custom2.keymap in the Card:\private\e7d61da9 folder.
- Start VirtualKey. Load the custom2-profile.
Then scroll to the right and change the mode to Include. Go to Options/Add/Add from installed and chose Garmin.
Get back to Settings(left), then go to options/save as/custom2.
Then chose "run in background" and u`re done.

Thanks a lot, I will try, so let me confirm once again, I install the signed virtual key on the micro sd card rite? not in the phone memory?

Hai there, thank you so much, now garmin XT already running in my tube...

I have question regarding the map, I have download my map: gmapsupp.img, and I already copy it to the garmin folder in my card.
When i use the keygen to generate the map id for it, i wrote the id : 123
and then I generate the unlock code, let say 678****** then I copy the unlock code into the file named as gmapsupp.unl
Is it the correct step?

maybe this one is a stupid question, but forgive me for my stupidity I need to be assured:
when running the garmin XT, it should be on the assisted GPS mode rite?
and when I use view map menu it's showing "no map", my prediction of this case is because I'm in a building...so I guess maybe I should use in an open area?? is it correct?...
or should there be more configuration?

:thanks:

pikaacz

yes, you paste the software unlock code into sw.unl and the map unlock code into gmapsupp.unl.
i recommend using only "integrated gps" option, that way the phone won't download any data over the internet (btw roaming internet fares are insane). after running garmin for the very first time it will show you no map until you receive proper gps signal. after that you can freely browse the map even without getting a fix on your position. hope this helps :)

Anyone heard anything about the new version for touch screen mobiles of Garmin yet?

ace9a
23rd January 2009, 02:43

- Use the keygen to create an id which u write down in a textfile u name "SW.UNL" (it needs to be a .unl file, not only per name)and copy ove to the "Garmin"- Folder on the Phone-Card.

And u might wanna rename CardRunner.exe in the Card:\sys\bin folder to CardRunner.bak or CardRunner.old as it kills off a service which really drains a lot of accu-power.
But that only stops the service from autostarting together with the phone.
It is active as soon as u start garmin and stays active! So u better restart ur Phone every time u`re done navigating.

Okay, I get it now, btw what u mean by "integrated GPS " is assisted GPS (use attached/Built in GPS) rite?
After I put the sw.unl to my garmin folder and when I see the settings-->about, it will display "Unlock ESN:xxxxxxxx", is it the correct display?

pikaacz
23rd January 2009, 14:45
yes, in garmin you should use the built-in gps only. go to settings>phone>application sett.>positioning>positioning methods and uncheck everything except "integrated gps". then start garmin and go to tools>settings>system>remote gps and verify, that it's using integrated gps.
if in garmin you see "Unlock ESN: number" it's correct

On your Windows, go to My Computer (or any folder). In the folder options uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types". After it you should see SW.UNL.TXT in the folder where it is. Now, you can delete ".txt" by rename...

Uninstall and re-install the app. If successfully installed, you should find an "E:\private\e7d61da9" folder, within you should place the .keymap configuration file of your preference.

I think there is a lot of information and guides to help users to use garmin on the new nokia 5800. It needs a lot of reading but all the information is more or less there.
I have a small question though about renaming a couple of files in order to save battery life; in XPLORE i can't seem to be able to rename them, it just doesn't allow me. I tried to use TASKMAN to see how i can close any garmin process but didnt find any open.

Is there a tool I need to have to be able to close the process then rename those files? or maybe i am missing something?

thanks a lot

Following the thread here, i believe there are 2:

one in E:\RESOURCE\PLUGINS\CARDRUNNER.RSC

the other in: E:\GARMIN\CARDRUNNER.DLL (which disappears when u close TSRautostart)

you dont need to rename the cardrunner.rsc, only the dll.
But you are better off using usb connection to your pc, and doing it on there. As the pc has full control over all your files.

only the first one matters for it kills tsrautostart (use a taskmanager to verify it is gone afterwards) or sth similar (dunno the exact name anymore)which autostarts with the phone and drains accu-power.

renaming those files wouldnt kill or stop TSRAutostart.exe

anyone can comment on this or has managed to stop this process from starting everytime the phone is switched on?

By the way guys,,, I just discovered a bug with this version on the nokia 5800:

when you select WHERE TO from the main menu, then select an address or search for an address, you be presented with GO / MAPS choices. If you choose GO then it will prompt for downloading traffic info (doesnt matter if you accept or not) then it will calculate the route (takes few seconds).
After this you hear a voice detailing the route to take. If you select any step of this route then you turn the phone horizontally, the garmin application closes itself. I dont think this is normal?

probably a bug i should say

spark001uk
20th February 2009, 15:14
I think thats normal, all the mapping programs ive had crash if u rotate the screen.
Do you get crashes from dragging the map around for a few minutes (in browse map) ? That's what happens to mine, also it does it while navigating sometimes too, it just freezes.

Guys,
I think we should accept those bugs or what ever it is.. because this Garmin version is not for Nokia 5800... it just can be used with extra feature such as virtual key but not perfect..anyway it is still ok with me because something is better than nothing. Just wait Garmin uprade version for our 5800XM touch without virtual key...

I think you're right. The thing we have to remember is, the 5800 is the very first phone on the s60v5 platform, we are quite lucky to have the few s60v5 applications that are out there so far, those developers have done a fast job to get those out already! It's just a matter of time, the software companies would be letting money go to waste if they didn't release software for these new handsets, so they are bound to be working on it as we speak!!

That's fine I am not complaining ; just thought maybe it's different between firmware versions.

However, I am curious if there is a way to disable the screen rotation within an application? (i.e For GARMIN XT the rotation doesn't work but for all other software, then it does) I don't think so but i thought i might ask this question here

I had to reformat the card now i can't install gmxt, it's there but it doesn't start, doesn't copy pvt and sys folder, their unavailable unless i change to mass storage but in y-browser the files aren't visible. Is there some way of changing the attributes of these folders? I tried eveything, setting explorer to view hidden and system files, using a altap salamander and other file browsers to change the attributes put none of them work. Have i borked my card? I don't know anyone i can borrow a card from or else id test it.

[edit] It's fixed now, I had to hack with helloOX 1.3 and it's working. Still can't acess those two dirs via pc suite though.

You must first insert the Garmin base map with the map it is free, then casting the rest of the map of your choice, which is opening, and then must be to locate the GarminXT, a place where you are, and only then do. more.
But the true answer would be to specify what and how is not working, because at my new works on N5800 is phenomenal

Been using this a few weeks now on the Nokia 5800.

PROBLEM. Whilst using the navigation sometimes the program just quits few minutes when trip is planned and ready to go. Is this due to system memory problems.

Have tiried to display less info whilst travelling which seems to work.

Does anyone know why it kicks out?

spark001uk
3rd April 2009, 17:58
Exactly the problem i've noticed. It does it sometimes in the middle of a journey, it just freezes, then quits a min or two later. I find the easiest way to hang the program though, is to go to browse map, and drag the map around a few times, it seems it definitely can't handle that.

Mind you, this version isn't meant for the s60v5 platform, so anything could be causing it i suppose.

I have 5.4 installed on my 5800. The best way to keep the memory from lagging is to keep the map details setting to least. That way, there is enough memory on the device while garmin is running. Also make sure no other program is running in the background.

I have one question though for those who have 5.3 installed. Do street names appear on your maps? I used to have 5.1 installed and the street names were displayed. After updating to 5.4, street names no longer showed up in 3D view. I'm planning to downgrade to 5.3 if it still shows street names.

Thanks guys.

thanks guys. looks like i'll be downgrading to 5.00.30 then. 5.00.40 just doesn't display the street names on the map anymore, both on my n-95 8gb and my 5800. I tried every setting but just won't work. I'm sure it's not the map because i'm using the same .img file and that the street names display when i'm on it on the top portion of the screen.

Oh well, hope garmin does something to correct this.

No. From 5.00.30, virtual key is no longer needed as it already supports touch. However, in my experience, 5.00.30 is better because it shows the street names on the map while navigating. This is not the case with 5.00.40. I downgraded from 5.00.40 to 5.00.30 because of this.

Anyone using firmware ver21.0.025 on their 5800 with GMXT 5.0.30/40/50?. I notice there is a bug with the new v21 firmware. Whenever you do a search for an address or POI in GMXT and you try to input in a special character (eg, / or \) in the popup symbol keypad, you cannot select that special character and when you click on the 'tick' button it doesn't return you to the GMXT search screen. You are not the first one...Try to set back the date in your phone until you install Garmin. If this doesn't work, hard reset your phone. If this two doesn't work (and i don't think so) you have to upgrade your software phone if there is one newer via NSU. At least this was the solution for two of my friends having the same problem.
