DosBox S60 port by kolijoco (13.02.09)
Full & Slim version

hi all,
i've finally gotten my s60 (wincw emu for now) build to run - which has been done before -, and also to run a dos game (magic candle) - which i'm not so sure has been done.
anyway, if all goes well, there will be some updates and hopefully a sisx release soon...

ok, lets try this. here's something adventurous people might like to test drive.
not sure about system requirement, i would guess you need at least a 3rd edition s60 device, and having a minimum 320x240 (either orientation) display is probably a good start.
the release includes:
-my gcce release build,
-the s60 sdl binary release,
-nokia's openc redists (the redistribution license document is included, if you don't agree to the terms within, don't use them! from my limited understanding this should be ok, if not, let me know and i'll kill the post).
-example dosbox.conf and mapper.txt
-"detailed" :-) instructions in README.TXT

n1 Emu... but does anybody know how to map that i can move a cursor in a game?

Would we need a bluetooth keyboard for this, especially for the 5800 (which can run it, it seems, but the lack of keys?)... Will the software keyboard work in it?

There's a problem, becose the font is too small on n82 and you can see nothing on the display. How to increase the font?

hey yea the font on e71 is a bit pixilated. Also it seems like its not using the full width of the screen.. Apart from that awesome app!!!! Gonna try jazz jackrabbit in a minute. Will post some screenies ... After i figure out what the return key is :-)

ok ive changed in dosbox.conf so it autostarts the game that i chose... But its not happening . I have a feeling that the dosbox app isnt finding my dosbox.conf and mapper.txt . Its both in c:/data/ . Am i doing something wrong?

Yes, but that was partial dos with Minimal commands and no external apps support...

Works great on n82! I'm playing elite frontier. The greatest trade space game for dos! Cursor works with such settings.

Dos tree is an emulated folder. You specify this folder in conf file by adding line with "mount" command. It is made for dos to "see" the specified folder as c drive root.

1. 1st, Install SLIM version
2. Then Install All dependencies (From Full version Archive - inside dependencies folder)
3. Then move both mapper.txt and dosbox.conf to C:\Data
4. Then Create a Folder Named Dos (Inside C:\Data)
5. and Finally, CLOSE ALL RUNNING PROCESSES USING KILLME!


AND IT SHOULD WORK!! ATLEAST IT DID FOR ME!!!! BUT STILL, ITS TOOOO SLOWW!!! AND CAN'T TYPE CHARACTERS!!

@mdkumargce: Have you tried closing all hidden/shown processes? B'cuz its necessary to do this before starting SLIM version.

@em1il: The Full version requires 30MB or Free RAM. But unfortunately, Older phones (N73, N95-1, E50, E60, E61, E70, 6120) have only 18-20 MB free RAM, thats why only SLIM version can be used with those phones..

BTW, what about speed? Have u tried any game? How was the speed of game?

there's no option to choose CPU Speed! Its either Normal or Simple!



Further, I have tried by changing values of Cycles/Sensitivity/MemSize, But Still, No Improvment!

to abc_to_xyz.... key codes you sent are not working :( I also tried entering unicode key's (just entered key_r and 114) but im still geting 1 instead of r... also with your (unicode) list some keys are not working like q,w... looks like it's not unicode list, but some nokia modified :(

Thats even more difficult.... B'cuz so far, we are only able to assign a single values to 0-9 keys... (Like: I assigned 1=d; 2=a; 3=v; 4=e; 5=i; 6=r; 7=x; 8=t; 9=n; 0=l)



As far as my thinking GOES, this project is a FAILURE as it requires an ultra-fast phone (More then 128MB RAM and Dual-Processors).. and there are key mapping problems too....

I did some research and found following ... Nokia full qwerty keyboard has no separate codes for keys that are on same button. So if you press R you will get code 49, but if you press blue function key you will get code 25 and when you press r key you will get 49 again not some other code. So dosbox needs to look if there is code 25 and then to switch to alternate config file something like mapperbf.txt and take letter from there. So it's a bit tricky and currently until kolijoco modifies dosbox there will be no way to use full keyboard. It is possible to set all letters but you won't be able to use numbers and other chars usually accessed with blue function, shift and ctrl. Also every button sends two codes one when pressed and one when released. so when you press blue function you get 25 and when you release it you get -25 so dosbox needs to track when it's pressed and when released. Double function key just sends 25 -25 25 -25. I made simple mShell script that returned me all keys

I guess lot of modifying will be required to make all changes. Maybe if there is way to use some nokia's api for accessing keyboard that handles everything... Unfortunately we will need to wait until kolijoco comes back to project... and I wish him all best in his private life and hope he will solve all his problems ;)

I'm trying to use the bootloader to start windows 3.1 but no luck yet... I have to make a new bootloader since this one gives an error with something about the input...

But i don't really get it the psp has a 333mHz processor and can run everything just fine as far it goes with windows 98 and dos games and even mac os8.1 with warcraft 2 and flightsimulator why does'nt it work with the n95 well? The psp slim has also 64mb ram and the old one even 32!... and maybe if someone ported the Basilisk emulator we could run mac and that is alot fastr...

The trend in mobiles is that there will become faster and having more memory. Buy a new phone and the problem will be solved.. if not - buy a computer and play games.

In any way, it is not totally failure. Ppl were able to run even windows 3.1 on their mobiles. What you need is preferably a mobile with 40mb free memory. Less memory most probably will not work for you.

Regarding keyboards, buy an external or edit autoexec.bat to run everythign automatically, if not - wait few months and maybe someone will be nice enough to finish this project. Or, again, go to official dosbox, download it, download s60 sdk and try it yourself.

The other problem is..

THIS VERSION IS A VERY VERY VERY EARLY BETA (as described by the author himself)

Its in no way optimised (eg. No Dynamic Core support that can SPEED things up considerably) and it is very buggy at this stage.

i dont know what the problem is. Its a little bit slow but hey.. its early beta and we can most probertly expect better speed and handling in future versions. BTW Nokia brings out the new E55 in June, it got a 600 MHZ Prozessor,nearly doubble as fast as the N95

I tried running commander keen on DosBox and i was sooooo happy to see that my old love is running on my N79. I think this project is one groundbreaking thing and i will patiently wait for next versions. All best for the author !

Oops, I forgot to mention it a failure for old phones... For new phones, its an innovative app. But still, it needs lot of polishing!

No luck yet on the win 3.1 i can start MS-DOS butnow i have to type and i cant use the autoexec andd the keyboard... i have to type so can someone make this layout for me for n95 1=w 2=i 3=n 4=enter and i need the abillity to use the mouse but how?

the animation is just too slow everywhere.. this way the games i've tried so far are not really enjoyable.. i have e51 which has pretty much memory and pretty fast processor.. what are you experiencing? have u the same problem?

Windows 95 was about to lanch when an error appeared with in its title not enough free memory Dammmnn n95-1 memory lack... The only way its gonna work on dthe n95-1 is if there;s a program that can make virtual memory (like windows does) or more free ram than it would work...

It Should work on the n95 8GB wich has twice the rRAM...

P.S. i tried with KILLME too but no luck...

How did you get it to run? Mine boots the img but when you go to run win.com in the C:\windows, it just comes up with a black screen and nothing else...

Which version of the DOSBOX you using? The full or lite one? (I am using the full with an E71 and allocated 8MB of RAM to the DOSBOX).

on my e51, there's a black space on the bottom of the screen so the image is compressed and i can't read the text, it's too noisy. are u having this problem too?
i've seen a photo of e71 running this, and it was ok, it hadn't such problem..

I do have the right img file (I think) as it does load up on my DOS BOX on my computer but not on my phone..

My config is attached.. 8MB memory with XMS, EMS, UMB all enabled.. tried Core= simple and normal.. all come out as a black screen and nothing much after you typed win at the prompt.

(I am a DOS man, so yes, I do know cd windows, win to start).

EDIT:Seems to be It doesn't work properly,because it says to him "its now safe to turn off your comp" so system is shuting down at start.

Unfortunately wont get past this screen.. (although it did run scandisk which I then escaped).

Phone went black from there. Let it be for about an hour but unfortunately doesnt go anywhere. Maybe its a prob with the VGA emulation?

The default config file does not have any parameters to allow the VGA resolution to shrink to 320x240 and hence why I suspect the black screen.

However, its all good now and using W95 on my phone.. absolutely amazing!!

Found out about this from Engadget ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).

I can't seem to install all the dependencies on my Samsung i8510 INNOV8, i've personally signed all the dependencies but the 3 that don't seem to be able to install because a 'certification error' are stdcpp.SIS, RGA.sis and ssl.SIS. an anyone else with a non-Nokia handset (such as from LG or Samsung) help confirm this? I've had similar problems with other software before.

Thanks, just had a look around the 'Nokia hacking' forum and found this thread ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) was posted a few weeks ago, i'm not a regular over on that forum so thanks for the heads up - i'll see if it works any better after trying this. :good2:

How much ram do you need for the application?

N95-1 will not run Windows 95 unless its a fresh phone that has not got any other apps installed. My N95-1 has 22 MB left after a reboot and the application itself takes 15MB to run (for the LITE version - about 20MB for the FULL) and each MB you give to the Dosbox will take up another MB of memory. Be aware that the Symbian OS will start closing foreground applications (to protect its background apps) when memory starts to get down to 4MB or less remaining - including the DOSBOX app itself.

I find my N95-1 is only stable with DOSBOX running 2MB or so before it closes itself off and there is simply no way you can run Windows 95 with only 2MB of RAM (it is 8MB minimum with 16 recommended).

N95-2, N82, E71's etc with 60-70MB RAM after reboot will be able to run DOSBOX with up to 24 MB of RAM and is good enough for the Win98 image itself. However, it can be extremely slow since this program is only beta and not optimised properly as yet for speed. May change when the dynamic core feature is added in the future along with maybe some driver optimisations.

the solution is disinstall c2doom,install the sdl of dosbox and install the last version of c2doom,the 1.14 or you don't play c2doom in your phone..and this version of c2doom isnn't hacked..

You replayed to your question. You placed image in e:\data\dos and in dosbox.conf you pointed to e:\dos\windows\w31.img ... instead of e:\data\dos\w31.img ... error message simply says it can not find image file ;)

No its not.

Requires Direct X which requires a proper (2D at least) accelerated video card. DosBox is only running VGA 16 colour non accelerated at this stage.

I played jazz jackrabbit on s60 3rd DOSBox but its really slow if you want i poost a video.

u have to type WIN and then windows will start... or put it in the autoexec for WINDOWS<<<! and not the dosbox autoexec...

On Nokia E70:
Full version doesn't have enough memory.
Keyboard doesn't work in lite version. Nothing happens when I press keys on QWERTY keyboard, and only numbers appear when I press keypad keys.

pepe55 i have noticed that you managed to get jazz to run on your e51.
I however get 'not enough memory' errors all the time with jazz and my e71. It just starts gives me the error and quits again. Have you had any issues like that what so ever.? If yes .. How did you get rid of iit? .. Could also please upload your.conf file to this website . Would really help me a lot i think ... And hope

Try change memsize until dosbox crashes, it maybe help you with memory problem. I can do a conf especially for your phone tomorrow and send a link via pm but maybe you must edit memsize in it maybe not because I have'nt your phone. Im big Dosbox fan (best emulator ever on all systems)

You're getting this error because you're not allocating enough memory in dosbox for the program to access. By default, the dosbox.conf file is set to allocate 2 MB of space. By 756096 it's referring to bytes, try 738 KB.

What you want to do is edit the dosbox.conf.

I recommend you change
memsize=2

to something like
memsize=8

if you want to at least run windows 95. I dont know how much free ram an E71 has, but on my N95-3, i have mine set to memsize=16. When i have windows 95 fully booted up, dosbox takes up 50mb of ram, leaving me with 30mb free of ram on my phone.

Remember, although dosbox allocates 16mb of ram for an application, it also needs to allocate ram for it's self and emulate that ram, taking up ~50mb of space to do this (for the case of windows 95)

I used one of the earlier posted keymapper configs and backspace on the e71 appears to work as my return key. No esc though.

Having hit and miss running games. Got street rod 1 working. Not sq3 or jones in the fast lane. Would love those as they don't work in SCUMMVM s60 either.

EDIT: I got Master of Magic working. It's awesome. I used to play that game for hours on end. But no right click? Anyone know if there is a way to do right click in mouse mode?

anyway it was quite annoying the settings that work for me are, cpu normal and cycles 500' mem size is 16, and all sound turned off.

i can't set the mem higher than 16 otherwise the proggy crashes... someone here wrote that i should be able to get 24 but i can't even get 18.

the keys are very anoying, only keys that work for me are the numeric ones, when i try to assing one of the D-pad keys like 16, and like i saw ppl here do with n-82 or other devices it doesn't work, but when i assigned the number it does work, so i mannged to get dave to run at quite a nice speed :)

did anyone do get to operate the d-pad keys? except in the mouse form, after i press the green key they do respond

cool, but it's not working for me.. even if i set cpu to normal (instead of dynamic) and set memory to 1 mb insted of 2.. app rotates screen then immediately closes.. with last version i had such closing problem when i set memory to 16 mb, but it was working with even 8 mb.. but now it's set to only 1 mb, dynamic core is not enabled, so i don't know what's wrong. i have like ~45mb of free ram. of course, all dependencies are installed. i tried to move and edit the config/mapper file, but didn't help.. the previous version was working, and almost 10 mb ram remained free.. anybody has this problem too?

Given what NekoKG said earlier in the thread, is it true that for my E71 the fn keys have no separate hex value associated with them for a press?

I have been trying everything to get a * keypress with magickey or some other way of DosBox recognising a right click in mouse mode. Any ideas or do we seriously have to wait until a later version is released with a hardcoded alternative for those of us with qwerty keyboards and a fn-based * key?

well anywayz, this thing ain't faster then the full version at the begining of this thread, at least not for me, i didn't noticed any difference, mybe you didn't configured the first one good enough...

only diference is that now windows won't load and it did on the previous version, and i might add, not too bad at all... just put cycles to 6000+ and it works fine.

btw if you want to be able to use all key, use the help of the nice proggy magic key, this way N95 users can play games like keen and dave with the multimedia keys, really neat :)

Anyone with a non T9 based keypad have luck with a fully working keymap? Magickey would resolve all my issues, if only there was a hex value input for fn-based keys. But I can't find anything for this? Out of curiosity what is the key number for * on other Nokias? Maybe I could at least try that. If it is something other than these, it might be worth trying:

I found this concept realy cool.
As a dos man from way back, i thought this would be realy cool.

I followed all instructions to install on my N95 8GB.
An both the full and slim versions load fine.

Also, i can load games fine by using basic dos commands in the config file.
I can run commander keen, jazz, etc.

Theres just a few problems;

1) sound seems very poor and just sounds like static, any way to fix this ?
2) if i dont set it to auto load a game, and goto dos prompt, i can only type numbers, not letters. Meaning the only way to load games is to set them to start as soon as DosBox starts because i cant type the command to run them otherwise. Any way to fix this ?
3) The text in the dos prompt is nearly impossible to read, looks kind of squashed and distored, any way to fix this please ?
4) This is the big one. Speed. All the games that i have tested run at VERY VERY slow speeds. I saw the video of the games 'pepe55' was running, and was amazed at the speeds he was getting, for me its like, one frame, then a second later, another frame, etc. Everything is unplayable. Which makes this whole exercise pointless. :(
Please can someone tell me how to fix the speed to make things run faster, even if it could run at 1/10th of the speed 'pepe55' is getting, it would be better then what i'm getting now.

Use the slim version and restart your phone to clear up some ram.

i've installed slim version and it's still not working bro, my nokia 5730 free ram is more than 63 mb after restart. when i open the program nothing happen :emptymind:.
