Its impossible to have viruses on Android...don't want to go into detail why not...

Well you could always hide viruses/malware in .rar, .zip, and .apk (you should know that if you change the .apk to a .zip you can browse inside of it) Just make sure you scan every single file you download with you AV and you should be ok :)

@HitmanShalva

Dont be naive. Its not impossible to have viruses on Android. Anything is possible, especially on computer systems.

@rbgmode

I dont think your virus scan will help much since they are made for Windows based systems.

I think the potential of spyware is greater, especially if someone modifies an app to redirect traffic to another server. For example, say that someone post a Facebook paid app that was modified. When entering your user/pass in the app, your information could be sent to another server (the hacker) and then to Facebook. You would never know that the app was tampered with.

Im not sure how easy it would be to do this, since Ive never coded for Android before. Are the files inside the .apk protected so someone cant see the code?

if you change the name of say file.apk to file.zip you can open and browse the contents

@bb007 #infectedapk for listen smarty pants I run windows so I check to see if my pc can get infected. It is common sense I also scan my phone because I download zip and rar files to it too. My point is I just scan to see if my pc can get infected if that is what your worried about nothing found yet. As to the phone and the apk being modified then it is purely karma.
I doubt that the apk would function properly if modified unless completely redone. It is kinda like a pc program think about it that way someone has to have the time to mess with the whole program to get it to work with all the modified registries.
Can it be done, hackers have proven that when there is a will there is a way, am I worried about this..NO!
Listen if you are too paranoid then don't download a thing. If you like free things then ofcourse the risk is always there. Don't complain just karma.

Boy I love it when people get out of their pram, I think you're missing the point here.
There wasn't any criticism as to whether these apps contained Virus/Malware, but whether they could contain it.

Flaming ignorance is arrogant and ignorant.

I stumbled on this thread. With all the news about actual android exploits, are any of you concerned that these apps/games contains backdoors/spyware/trojans/etc?
