not every TV supports it
if you want to view them on TV , better convert to a different format

i have a philips 42 inch lcd tv which supports HD . i dont think its an issue with the tv. the computer doesnt play the movie correctly . the main problem is video and audio being out of sync and the video sometimes getting stuck for short periods of time :S

i dont think you are getting what i am trying to say . i am playing mkv files on a computer . the moniter should not effect the ability of the computer to play these files . . i have a phillips 42inch LCD Tv which supports 1080hd so yes i am sure my tv supports 1080.. now my problem isnt with the tv . it is with the computer which i have connected to the tv .

Your problem is most likely in codecs configuration. Play around with them (install ZOOM player and select "enable smart play..."). Then try. Sometimes you have to adjust codecs manually nevertheless.

MATROSKA SPLITTER and FFDSHOW are what you need. Configurations depends on others codecs you have installed. Can't help you with VLC couse it is simply not a player of my choice. Try ZOOM Player and you will see why. It can also configure codecs for you and override system settings. Player will tell you exactly what codecs you don't have installed and offer you to download them and configure automatically. As often happen with codecs maybe you'll have to restart windows to make them work even instalation procedure or player don't tell you so (Bloody WINDOWS :-) )

Right click on player window, pick "Options/setup". On the left of pop-up window under "System" pick up "Missing Formats". On the right side click long button "Click here to run Install Center..." and follow instructions.
After installation of all codecs chose "Smart Play" on the tree of "options\setup". Mark checkbox for "Enable Smart Play..." and click button "Auto-Configure". Reboot PC and play your MKV file.
If audio still lagging behind I'll send you my settings (as screenshots).

Absolutely not, so don't worry. You are still having codecs related problem. MKV format is amazing, almost revolutionary but well known as sometimes hard to set.
Here are my settings (in reg files because too meny screenshots needed). Note, ffdshow need to be installed in "C:\program files\ffdshow" folder. There are two *.reg files in ZIP. One for audio and one for video settings. Just click them both and restart.
