View Full Version : Sticky keys & 'jumpy' touchpad fix!

I unplugged the *******s from the motherboard.

I continuously had problems with the ctrl key sticking. Even using a USB keyboard and never touching the green keyboard.

Then the mousepad started jumping and jumping and jumping. I would have to reboot to get it to go away and then it would be back within an hour or so (if not 5 minutes).

So I commited to using nothing but USB devices and unplugged them. I/O bliss has ensued.

CAUTION: Non-recommended instructions follow. I've taken apart my XO before and didn't want to bother again so this is what I did.

Unfold your XO and note the thin green bumper closest to you opposite the touchpads from the keyboard. Pry it off (I pulled it off using my fingers). Be firm but gentle. There are two jelly/rubber footpads that should fall out.

You'll notice the bottom of the XO is a sandwich of white plastic with the keyboard in between.

On each side of the XO are the green surrounds that matched the piece you just pulled off. Wiggle/push/pull/jimmy the front part of these off off (don't go past the beginning of the keyboard).

Now you can pry open the sandwich an inch or so. I actually got mine about 2 to 2-1/2 inches wide, but that made the white plastic bow considerably. In the center under the middle touchpad is a wide ribbon cable. This is the keyboard cable. I took a fork and gently pulled it out trying to be careful not to touch anything else.

The mousepad cable is to the right of that and closer to you. You may be able to use the pull tab on the cable to get it free. If not, use the fork again, but BE GENTLE.

Reassemble by popping the surrounds back in (this will take some more wiggling and maybe a bit of force), plug in your USB peripherals and VOILA!

Please keep in mind that I could not have cared less if I permanently broke my XO keyboard or trackpad. If it would have been easier to cut the cables I probably would have.

Thank you Negroponte and ASUS for bringing me ever closer to disposable computing. Maybe Wayan should have coined 5P computing:

Power, Performance, Portability, Price, and Perishable.
