Hey, im in the UK an have a G1, i've been seeing alot of people saying they now have firmware 1.6, my phone hasnt updated to it, i checked for an update using the phones option and it said im upto date, i then called t-mobile and asked about the update, they said there is no known update for the G1 at present, i said i've seen the update video preview on android.com, and its a real update, they said no, only update they have is for the g2, scheduled in late november?
am i going crazy? there is an update for android called 1.6 "donut"? where can i get it if not other the air update?

try a google search for the 1.6 update but you should know some of your apps wont work like they did on 1.5... the update offers minor changes... hope its worth it for you.

Yeah, thanks but it did cross my mind to do a google search before posting, but i could only find people saying that they have got 1.6, and nowhere for me to get 1.6, seeing as i called t-mobile here in the UK and they said they have no knowledge of any updade scheduled for the G1, only the G2, and its not 1.6.
but i know that there is a 1.6 update, and i wanted to know aside from "over the air update" how can i get it.

Where are you?, are you in the UK?, as T-Mobile told me there was NO update for the G1 as far as they knew.
As for the difference's as far as i know they main thig it changes is the market layout, its alot different and also the search bar widget now searches the entire phone, not just the web.

yes, i have got a g1. There are loads of benifits by rooting, i dontr see any reason not to. Firstly you can get the latest version as soon as it is released, you can use root with apps too. like bluex, i can now send and receive files via bluetooth, i can make proper backups of app data, like same games and robo defence profile. even the apps themselves.
U can also theme it. i am not talking about those open home alternatives, this actualy themes the real android. Also, u can do cool stuff like use ur g1 as a wireless router, using ur 3g with any wifi laptop.
the posibilities are endless. definately workth looking into

there is a bit of techy bits but there are apps that will do it. I have seen a oneclickroot app that will root ur phone automatically. There is another app, [Only registered and activated users can see links] which will install the recovery image (once you have root) so u can back backups and restore them
