what are advantages and the disadvantage of rooting a phone i am new to this

i am new to this too, i have Hero, how can i root

I have an HTC Magic running a very fast Hero ROM.. essential turning it into a Hero without the price or the uneeded 1.8 extra megapixels. Check over at XDA Developers or TheUnlocker.com on how to root your Hero. You can look at my Hero ROM on youtube :)
