I am buying a phone from my friend and i would like to know how can i prevent from buying a blocked/barred/stolen phone.

I mean, what should i check (or ask the seller) before buying a mobile phone?

put your sim inside and then check the code of the phone if it's locked

I also want to strengthen what maxx have said. IMEI is unique per mobile phone. When you register to the cellular network, the BTS will check whether your IMEI is valid or not. Reported stolen phone IMEI will be blacklisted by the operator and cannot login to cellular network.

Yes both points above will make sure you have a legal phone. If it works with your sim card in and passes the imei sticker to *#06# comparison then should be fine. One question though. You said buying from a friend... Surely your friend would not sell you a stolen phone would they ? ! ...
