3 to 6 year is normal for laptop to die
can happen with any brand

+++++++++++++++++

- treat it as desktop ;
do not use a laptop on your lap , it needs cooling [ from bottom side ]
use only on flat surface [ table ]

- avoid using in direct sun light [ for same reason ]

- avoid moving it around when on , shocks can do damage more when when hardware is hot

3 yr s and ur laptops dies ?????? nahhhhhh thats rubbish..........the reason this one s died is becos there s a common fault with the hp solder n nvidea video chip ...the lappie easily over heats becos the fan is too small for the big 17 inch laptop which in turn causes damage to the solder n chip and frys the mother board ....google it hp dv9000 problems and you see loads of threads on this and how hp refuse to do anything about it ,,,there s even a class action against them in america but.....this wasnt the question i was askin ....i was askin in ur opinion wat s the best laptop within my requirements as listed i can get for under 700 pounds ????????????.........is the new dell xps 15 or 17 models with the 2 nd generation chips ..any good ?? worth the money or would you go for something else ????

no , its not normal , but
if its common , it becomes normal , get it ?

its because people ask for cheap laptops , they build cheap laptops

but , thats not it , there is more
its called technique ;

- you cannot mount a 12 inch fan in a laptop
- expensive laptops are just as small => cooling problem
- SSD drives last 500000 to 1000000 hour , max

what i tried to say is ;
i dont think brand makes that much different
buy one from a well known brand
[ for 300 bucks , then in 3 year buy another one ]
[ leaves you 100 bucks for beer and some calming pills ]
