I'm not making any headway over here

1) Do I need to activate the box in order to use the box
2) Do I need to activate the box in order to UPDATE the box
3) What are the possible reasons why I'm I cannot connect to the server - I keep getting "can't connect to server" error.
I'm using both V3 and V2 of the update tool and none of the boxs (I have both blue & green box) will connect.
The updater displays the following:
