fonoinfo, a leading developer of intelligent wireless applications today announced the release of Commander, a complete virus detection, prevention and disinfection solution for mobile phones. In 2004 more than 16 viruses and virus mutations were reported. The threat continues to rise quickly in 2005.
“The threat of mobile viruses is real, it’s here and it’s spreading very rapidly. Commander’s virus scanner allows users to scan their handsets for the Skulls Trojan, Lasco and Cabir worms as well as other threats and subsequently take action to disinfect and protect their mobile handsets” said Ayad Sabbagh, Chief Executive Officer, fonoinfo
Commander protects mobile phones from threats in real-time by blocking any attempt by viruses, worms and other malicious elements from installing themselves on the mobile phone. Commander scans incoming messages for threats whether they are received via Bluetooth, infrared, WAP, SMS or other means and eliminates the threat incase the message was of a malicious nature. Users are able to manually or automatically scan both principle and peripheral memory locations including memory cards therefore offering a complete and powerful protection. Virus updates are sent to Commander users as soon as a new threat is out. Commander auto-runs at the device’s restart and continues to run in the background so users can use the phone in the normal manner while the protection is up. fonoinfo’s Commander currently supports a wide variety of Symbian handsets.
Sabbagh commented “Mobile phones can be more prone to threats than computers. Most mobile handsets have several means for connectivity such as Serial cable, removable memory cards, WAP/GPRS, infrared and Bluetooth which can all be sources of incoming threats. Where the majority of computers are stationary, cellular phones are mobile by nature which makes the location aspect an additional threat factor. This is clearly exhibited in the case of the Cabir worm which spreads itself via Bluetooth to all phones in range”.
Cabir, the first mobile phone worm appeared in June of 2004. Although Cabir’s effect on the handset was annoying rather than damaging, new viruses such as Skulls cause damage to the phone’s functions and applications. In addition to damaging phone functions, mobile viruses can affect the user’s phone bill. The new technology advances in mobile handsets allow virus developers to create viruses that dial premium rate numbers, send SMS messages to premium rate numbers, download large content from the internet and other actions. Those actions can all be executed in the background without the user’s knowledge. This can introduce ways users can be financially affected that were not common with computers.
Sabbagh added “It is a fact that the number of available mobile handsets is more than the number of computers. Furthermore, the number of advanced mobile handsets is increasing at a much higher rate than computers making mobile handsets more popular and therefore a tempting platform for virus writers. In the past 24 months smart phone sales have been growing at soaring rates. Although consumers have benefited from the rich features those phones offered, this came at a toll presented in the new viruses which were not technically possible to implement in older generations of mobile handsets. This trend seems to continue in 2005”.
Program detects: Cabir.A, Lasco.A, Skulls, Cabir.B, Cabir.Dropper, Cabir.C, Cabir.D, Cabir.E, Cabir.F, Cabir.G, Cabir.H, Cabir.I, Cabir.J, Cabir.K, Cabir.L, Skulls.B, Skulls.C, Cabir.M, Skulls.D, Cabir.N, Cabir.O, Cabir.P, Cabir.R, Cabir.S, Cabir.T and Cabir.U
