View Full Version : Increase MMC size
boditza 5th February 2006, 02:03 I have found on this forum this article:
"--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Increase Your MMC Space.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your files in MMC are stored in multiple (disk) blocks.
So if you format using 16K block, the space used will be 16K eventhough your file is just 1K.
If you buy MMC, it is usually preformatted with 16K block. Therefore alot of space is wasted as most installed program files are usually less than 2K.
You will need a card reader to do this:-
1. Connect card reader and copy all your files in the MMC to computer disk. (Make sure you set the show all/hidden/os files to "on")
2. Do a format of the MMC using command line "format" and use the /A=size option.
Alternative, you can use the Disk Management in Adminstrative Tools to format. Make sure you select FAT. For 256MB MMC, smallest block you can use is 4K, 128MB is 2K, 64Mb is 1K and 32MB is 512B.
(Note: You cannot use the phone "format MMC" to do this as the format just clear the allocation table and does not change the block size)
3. Copy back all files to MMC.
Now you will find that you will have more space.
256mb MMC got back 30+ mbs
"""
The problem is that after i try that method i get a 4gb mmc instead of a 256mb. Did anyone did it and if u know some program would be verry usefull.
yaminsuzuk 5th February 2006, 07:03 If this method works, it will also decrease the chance for the mmc to get corrupted.
aa10 5th February 2006, 09:45 this method is crap..so long already been posted in forum..and nobody agrees..
asdf 5th February 2006, 12:45 its already posted by mark 6600
vickyshahri 5th February 2006, 13:02 Can anybody confirm if it works or not?

Try to read before u post. I know its already posted and it's not by mark is on a sticky topic in this section. I just want to know with what program i can use it coz i tryed and i can't format it in 4k cluster mode.
Mark 5th February 2006, 18:29 i know i didn´t post this but if you have problems with this methode you should have posted on the topic that it was originally posted. posting like this seems like a double-post. and that methode is dangerous if you do something wrong you take the chance of damaging your mmc and the spave you gain is not worth the risk.
boditza 6th February 2006, 00:09 If i would have posted there i would have gooten an answer in 2-3 years :(. I am sorry for this double post but i hoped that i could get it sorted out.

notes:
1GB = 16k
512mb = 8192
256mb = 4096
128mb = 2048
64mb = 1024
32mb = 512
boditza 9th February 2006, 20:33 I tryed and i got an error message. It doesn't work for me :(. Plz post those who tryed it.
@edan1979
Your block size allocation is perfect, this one even goes for usb drives and other mmc, sdc etc. Good!
boditza 3rd March 2006, 00:04 I think windowz xp doesn't have this format function :((. I'll look for a older pc to install 98.
@boditza
No, this option exists in Windows XP (Professional)
Go to My Computer, Right clik> manage >disk Management >Choose the disk > Format
A dialogue box appears, the third option is all about allocation blocks
maxim24 7th March 2006, 20:24 what will i type if my mmc iw 512? 64? (my mmc is for n6630)

maxim24 8th March 2006, 18:59 i have tested it on my 512 and 64...it didnt work...the size was still the same
gchildz 16th March 2006, 04:19 format on 2 of my Kingston 256 and 512, it formatted but doesnt increase whatsoever
glogi 20th March 2006, 00:38 is there any chance to format 256MB MemoryStickDuoPro with 2k clusters and then it will work with 128MB of memory on SE P800?
cupido_amo 2nd April 2006, 11:48 i prefer don't try it,,,
i afraid this will crash my mmc
winwintoto1234 7th April 2006, 11:47 I know that, but it doesn't want to format it that way... i get a 2gb size mmc after i format it like that.
My question is whether your mmc still usable after getting a 2GB size on it?
paul777 7th April 2006, 12:14 i tried it but it didint change anytin....

boditza 9th April 2006, 01:41 My question is whether your mmc still usable after getting a 2GB size on it?

Same thing for me here. I've got a 512mb mmc but it shows up as only 489mb :(
rendar 18th April 2006, 11:39 Same thing for me here. I've got a 512mb mmc but it shows up as only 489mb :(
that's only normal... 489mb = 512000kb something...
howlingblaster777 18th April 2006, 22:07 I purchased a 512MB mmc, not a 512000KB one :(
howlingblaster777 18th April 2006, 22:09 I just made the calculations: 512000KB = 500MB. Even then there's 11MB missing :(:(:(:(
Mark 18th April 2006, 22:55 don´t you guys read basic internet articles? there is a thing called conversion rate bettween bytes and bits. so what the manufacturer´s say its 5120MB card its in reality 489MB in the phone or in any other device. its the same with all storage devices. an 80Gb hard disk also only has about 73 or 74GB of real space.
ton1x 18th April 2006, 23:04 nice info buddy

It does not work :( edan1979 on what system do you format MMCs that you have an effect?
swapnilsa 14th May 2006, 01:33 guys these methods dosent increase ur memorey card size...
if u expect tht dont read....
wat they do is kindof compact ur data in to smaller blocks so tht more data can be stored in already there space...
for eg:
a 2 kb file normally wud take(in a default formatted card)
16 kb space but after formatting
it will take just 4 or 8 kb space!...
so efectily ul save space...
MiLoKa66 14th May 2006, 04:56 I had read that it causes the memory card to be slower than before
