MorphGear is an application for Windows Mobile and Windows Desktop capable of hosting and executing MorphModules. Originally released commercially in 2000, it became Open Source in 2004.

MorphModules are plugins that can be thought of as miniature applications running inside of the MorphGear shell. Traditionally MorphModules were emulators, but since they can perform any kind of frame by frame drawing task, it is also possible to create native games and applications to be hosted within the MorphGear shell. Both open source and commercial modules are available for download and purchase.


Emulators simulate a hardware system through software. This can be any kind of hardware or circuit, but for our purposes refers to video game system hardware. The inner workings of the original system are mimicked as closely as possible so that the original software can be executed by the emulator to allow it to run on a device other than what it was originally targeted for. In many ways, an emulation system is much like an operating system in that it allows you to run your application software on your computer hardware.
