Hi all,

It's my 1st time perusing this forum. I've read alot but still don't feel confident in tweaking the phone. It's the wife's phone. I don't even own one. My tech. confidence with our Mac and my TomTom is quite sound. I'm comparing the iPhone tweaks to those of my TomTom 720. I've used many Navcores, both original and modified, as well as obtaining newer maps and activating them and adding supplemental applications. I've been able to do this with the many postings on the GPS branch of ipmart.

By tweaking my GPS, I've learned that newer Navcores(operating systems) could both add functions, improve operation but sometimes they do the opposite, resulting in reversion to an older state.

I knew nothing about the iPhone until visiting here. I think I now understand tethered vs. non-tethered and jailbreaking vs. unlocking. I see that as new OSs become available, new tweaking tools are necessary and provided in multiple versions, also, each allowing newer functions to the phone. So, I think I understand the processes that the developers must plod through.

Now, back to our phone. Its an iPhone 4 with the original OS 4.0(8a293)
Model is MC608LL. Modem version is 01.59.00

Unlocking and jailbreaking this present status of the phone appears easy. A link from this site provided youtube videos showing modifications through jailbreak.com website. It seems that I could do this now.

But by sticking with 4.0, am I missing much? I also assume that there have been several upgrades from 4.0 after search this site. Today was the 1st time that my wife received a notice that an upgrade was available. She was actually upgrading the phone while was searching this site. The upgrade failed which I now think was a good sign!

Can someone advise me to the best combination of OS (firmware) and best tweaking tool/process which would give us an unlocked, jailbroken, and untethered phone? The phone is obviously activated with ATT.

Do you back-up a phone as you would a computer or TomTom before you "mess with it"? As with my TT, (which I have totally made inoperable by continuous "unnecessary" upgrades), can it be erased and started from scratch if necessary? Sorry for the rambling.
