The Federal Communications Commission today announced the procedures that companies will have to follow in order to bid in the Mobility Fund Phase I reverse auction -- also known as Auction 901. Auction 901 will be conducted in a single-round reverse format over the Internet using the FCC auction system. Participants will not be able to bid via telephone. Applications to participate may be filed between June 27 and July 11. A mock auction will take place September 25, followed by the real auction starting September 27. The Connect America program is meant to bring wired and wireless broadband to under-served Americans, who typically live in rural regions. The FCC will award $300 million in one-time Mobility Fund Phase I support to carriers that commit to provide 3G or better service to areas where such services are not available. The FCC reformed the Universal Service Fund and Intercarrier Compensation systems to allocate the necessary funds.
